Hi Pat,
Metaclopramide safe for piggies ? Absolutely!
Some years ago my Mulberry's life was saved several times by a rush to the vets for some of this. He suffered with horrible gastric problems from birth and would not have lived as long as he did without the vet's intervention. Only a short while after a dose, he was up and about as if nothing had happened.
The fact that Doris does not appear to have a gut motility problem as everything is passing in one end and out the other without any apparent difficulty is a good sign.
If you do suspect gas, you could save yourself some extortionate vet bills by buying some baby colic drops. Now I know that your products will not be the same as mine but, just as an example, I use "Infacol" made by an English company. Someone will be able to suggest a suitable make for your piggies. This is concentrated and I use 2 or 3 drops but I also like the old fashioned "gripe water". Is this an England only thing? I know that one of my sons, who had dreadful colic as a baby, downed bottles of this stuff with no ill effect. For a piggy, you give 2 -3 ml via syringe.
My Hope had a sudden gas attack last year but, unlike Doris, she was not producing any poos. She had gripe water and Nurofen for the pain but in the end, a dose of liquid paraffin was needed to get things going again. Following this remedy, a whole cageful of poos arrived and she has been fine ever since ( paws crossed ).
Some piggies get "gassy" from eating certain foods. One of my Rodentologist's own piggies cannot eat any sort of greens without suffering so she is careful to keep leaves out of her bowl of veg when she chops up the meals for the vast number of inhabitants. So it is possible that the lettuce is having an effect. The Piggyfriends do not get much lettuce due to its laudanum content. They nap quite enough as it is.
I agree with you Pat.Try leaving out the lettuce for a while and see what happens. Give them extra cucumber for the liquid content.
Hugs for Doris ( and Audrey and Olivia too of course ).
Penny and the Piggyfriends.
