Here is the recipe for barley water, though you are unlikely to need it for your little pirates.

One part of pearl barley to 8 parts of water. Boil for 20-30 minutes ( you have to watch it as some barley absorbs more water than others and it might burn.)  Drain off the water and let it cool. The resulting liquid, which is very viscous, is what you give to the piggy via a syringe.

The barley residue can be liquidised along with a favourite veggie and enough water to make a thick soupy consistency. The piggy can eat this from a dish or it can be syringed.

Only make a small amount as it must be used within 24 hours.
