You gave her the best life, better than she would have ever had with anyone else. As I read you letter telling of her troubles and how you took such great and wonderful care of her and loved her as you did, I could picture in my mind her running as never before at the Bridge, with all the other beloved pets and animals waiting for their human family members to rejoin the one day. While we are broken hearted at our precious pets passing all too soon, ALWAYS too soon. Try to picture them in your mind made whole again, happier and freer than they have ever been, just as we too shall be when it is our time to join them. Remember, also, that time has no meaning at the Bridge of Heaven. When we are once more reunited with all of our beloved pets, friends and family that have gone on ahead, at the moment of our reunion it will be as though no we were only parted but for a moment, and when that moment has passed it will be as if it never was and all sadness will be erased... Replaced with only joy, love and peace. After all, it wouldn't be Heaven without all of our loved ones with us, ESPECIALLY our beloved pets! In the meantime, God's peace, mercy, love and blessings be with you and yours EVERYDAY, forever and always. Her real name was "Hello Kitty" after one of my favorite characters. And what a character she was. She was suffering from the dreaded bladder stone issues and there was nothing more I could do for her, she was suffering in my estimation and could no longer be helped other than surgery that I could not afford. Imagine, therefore, my horror when Copper started squeaking when peeing. I started him on a course of treatment for cystitis, hoping against hope that this was the cause of his squeak but it soon became apparent that there was more to it than a mere bladder infection. I took him to see the Rodentologists dreading the worst. Copper was laying on his back on the examination table so that he could be checked over. He was being felt for any tender areas when he decided to pee and, along with the stream of urine, out shot a stone! The Rodentologists were astonished as they had never seen that happen before and they have treated hundreds, probably thousands of piggies. Copper appeared to have suffered no damage in expelling the stone and was happily munching parsley on the examination table within seconds. When I picked up the stone, I could not imagine how it could have passed through a boar's narrow urethra but there was the proof. What a relief. I shall watch him very carefully as he could very well develop another stone, which might not pass so easily but what a narrow escape from surgery! I wonder if I can buy Polycitra in the UK? A young woman came in with an adult female guinea pig that she found alone and shaking in the middle of the very large parking lot of a Home Depot store. She thought it was awfully big for a hamster! :) Thankfully, she picked it up and brought it to the shelter, however, the shelter doesn't take any animals except dogs and cats. Luckily, my buddy Bonnie was there and called me immediately. I took the little girl and she was precious!!! She was dumped for sure as she is such an affectionate and sweet little girl; she had to have had a family. HOW sad that people can have a pet and then just dump it?! So, I had it home for a few days and named her DEBBIE after our very own Debbie Jones. This pig was beautiful inside and out like our own Debbie. After looking her over, she had an obvious head tilt (ear infection?) and small lump on one teat (lipoma?) I emailed The Critter Connection of Durham, Connecticut and bless them!!! They said they would take her into rescue and get her to the vet. So, my Debbie left today. I am so grateful to this amazing rescue group (where my own babies came from) and I know that Debbie will find a wonderful home. If you'd like to see her pigture, email me and I'll send you pix of this special little lady! Just sharing! Please scroll down if you think..aaaw there she goes again ;-) ). This morning my yaya looked really depressed. Her head in the food bowl, with one of those really sad looks on her face. I picked her up and immediately felt that her lymphe nodes in her eh.. paw pits were swollen again. She also didnt like it when i made her support her own wheight with her back paws (which i only did very briefly). To me this is a clear sign that her OD is acting up again (OD = osteodystrophy a hereditary metabolic disease that affects the bones and is common in satin pigs http://www.oginet.com/Cavies/satin.htm ) When I put her down after that, she also did the bunny hop, which is a sign that walking is painfull. So I fed her some painkillers and think/hope that she'll be fine a few days. Yaya is almost 4 years old right now. So that's pretty good considering that we diagnosed her when she was only 1,5 yrs old. She isnt bothered by her OD too much, usually feeding her painkillers for a week or so makes the swelling of her lymph nodes (which is a sign of bone joint inflammation) go away. The pain goes away faster, btw, she usually perks up in an hour or so. So why am I writing, nothing has changed hasn't it? We'll just keep going like this until she no longer bounces back and the pain becomes to much (I dread that moment, but i dont want her to suffer). Pffff...I dont know... it just depresses me a bit; seeing her like that (okay, am being a bit selfish right now; my pain is nothing compared to hers). You should have seen her this morning, it just breaks my heart. Okay, thank you for listening, I feel a bit better now and yaya probably will too (thanks to the painkillers) Janneke and the winky team, yaya, suus and Igor P.s. Do you think that she actually swallowed the whole stone or crunched it up? As piggies cannot vomit, I hope that you will see the stone pass through her system and out the other end. Cherry stones do contain cyanide but this is only released when the stone is broken and I believe that it would take a lot of stones to have any effect. The idea of the workshops is to give children a chance to see the guinea pigs in real life and learn more about them from our store colleagues. The children and parents can then decide if they are the right pet for them and how to care for them responsibly. As a National pet company we are acutely aware of the impact movies can have on customers particularly children from films such as Ratatouille and Bolt which is why we have decided to make sure people know guinea pigs do not come with night vision goggles or ride scooters but they do make great pets with the right care. Following the launch of our charity Support Adoption for Pets (registered charity number 1104152) one of the schemes they introduced was the adoption centres located within many of our stores. The idea is to give small pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils and rats a second chance of happiness. The Charity also works closely with many animal organisations and re-homing centres with many receiving donations from the Charity. Pets at Home Ltd have and always will put pets before profit and if our store colleagues have any concerns on the future welfare of the pet the sale will be refused. They talked about the fact guinea pigs need lots of care and that kids tend to get bored easily . They even included comments and facts from a guinea pig rescue. It was done up really nice. I hope lots of parents read it!!! Having takin in and rescued a few piggies myself - I was worried that this new movie would make things worse. Cranberry juice is great stuff for piggies ( and ladies ) with cystitis ( UTI ). It is usually recommended that it be diluted as piggies do not always like the strong flavour but obviously this does not bother Lucy. It does not cure the cystitis but can hold the infection at bay. Given enough experience and a large number of piggies, a UTI is often recognisable by the distinctive smell of the urine. Often the piggy affected will be very wet underneath, needing cleaning up and a barrier cream applying to prevent urine scald, which is very painful. Blood is not always noticeable in the urine, especially to begin with. Before starting a course of antibiotics I like to try one of the human cystitis remedies that are readily available in England from the pharmacy. There are several different brands but they are all based on sodium citrate. I have no idea if these are easy to buy where you are but if so, they are worth a try. They come in a box of five sachets and the one that I have is called Cymalon. One sachet of powder can be divided into three. Dilute one of these thirds into an eggcup of water and syringe it to piggy several times over the course of a day. The second third is then used for the next day, leaving the final third for the last day. Of course, wheeking like this can also suggest the ( whisper it quietly ) presence of a stone. Luckily these are often easily removed from a sow by a vet or rodentologist without the dreaded surgery needed for boars. Lots of hugs for Lucy. Penny and the Piggyfriends. I am overwhelmed with seeing cavies at the vet practice that I volunteer at and taking care of my own rescued cavies. I have lots of experience with taking up to 17 cavies on planes to Grenada in the West Indies and importing them back into the USA. I also have a home in the UK so I am familiar with the ever changing requirements of importing and exporting cavies from the UK and EU. The best way to contact me is to send me your telephone number and what country you are calling from and I will call you back. I have also sailed with my cavies on my 37 foot sailboat and had to declare them in over 20 different countries. So I will be happy to help anyone with questions. Regarding Vedra's new web page for BAR and the CCT, I have spoken to Vedra and her webmaster and am assisting them in fixing the Contact Us link. The web page is updated almost daily so please make sure you change your bookmarks to the new link and be patient. Lots of exciting changes are coming. If there is only one book that you own about cavies I would suggest Vedra's book Diagnostic Guide to Guinea Pig Problems. You should be able to buy it by PayPal soon. If you have any questions about the British names of drugs or anything about the book, once again I will be happy to assist you. Vedra works 365 days a week taking care of cavies. She does not read her email until midnight every night so please do not be put off if she does not get back to you immediately. Obviously since she is my mentor I know how to get in touch with her. Once the web page is done many of your questions will be answered.Vedra requests that you Please use the medical help line mobile number only for cavy emergencies until her work load gets a little less hectic. http://www.britishassociationofrodentologists.co.uk/ Cheers, Ann and the Rescued Piggys of Piggyville, Tampa Florida USA. Cavies tolerate this NSAID very well and can be on it for years. Starting does is Orally 10 mg q12h. Depending on the problem you can administer this dose for up to 5 days or longer then change to orally 5 mg q12h for weeks if needed. Then the dose can be reduced to orally 5 mg q24h indefinitely. I have had cavies with arthritis that lived pain free under this treatment protocol for 3 years and died of old age at 8 to 9 years old. With yaya I would always 'catch' some urine and take it to the vet (usually within a few hours, I think the max. is 24hrs but call your vet to make sure). The vet can diagnose a UTI with this (bacteria). If she has a UTI the vet will give you the proper antibiotics, if not, you usually pay a small amount and go home - relieved of your worries. Being very low to the ground, piggies can be quite clumsy when running around their cage/pen although I know that Edgeworth is quite a porker and not given to a great deal of exercise. It is quite possible that he caught his foot in some hay or knocked it against a house or the edge of the pen. I would hope that it is just a bruise and give him some painkiller. Often, after such an incident, piggies are running around as usual within a very short time. If he does not make a fuss when you move his foot and leg around then, paws crossed, it is not anything serious. Hopefully he will not need a trip to the vet. Lots of hugs for the invalid. We drove up to Myrtle Beach, SC, thinking we could get a small motel on the beach and just chill out and lay in the sun. We drove for h o o o u u ui r r r Ss s s ! Earl is not what you would want to see flying your plane, I promise you! We did find the beach eventually but didn't see anything but bars, water parks, blah, blah, blah. not what we wanted. So, we though we would try the other part of SC that has shore line. It too turned out to be a disappointment. So, we ended up driving back to Atlanta and trying something different. Our friend was staying here, minding the pigs and the house. We left on Tuesday and were back late on Wednesday night. We literally drove at least 20 hours looking for this stuff. We were tired, to say the least But, we were going on vacation, doggone it, one way or the other! Earl made up his mind he was going to get me out of the house for a few days because of some really bad stuff I am having to deal with involving my family and he knows I am just about at my breaking point. So, we came back home on Wednesday and then turned around and left again on Thursday morning to go to Tunica, Mississippi to play some slots. I am a slots junkie. Love them all! He knew I would enjoy them but just getting out of the house for a few days is what I truly needed and it did indeed help me get a little less depressed. The casinos, unfortunately, have changed over all the coin machines to paper tickets. Now, you don't hear the money chink chink chink into the tray where someone like myself could count it to see how much I was winning. Oh no! Now, they give you a little ticket that pops out and it is printed on there how much you cashed out for. Huh??? I can't play those kinds of machines without someone sighted standing right over me, watching what is going on, so they can keep me up to date. Earl does it for me but I know he would rather b playing cards or roulette. So, guess it's time to get my letter writing cap on and address these issues with the powers that be. Doubt if it will do any good but it will make me feel better. I hope you are all doing well and that all the babies are healthy and strong. Are they still adventuring? I haven't had a chance to get caught up yet but plan to do so tomorrow, first thing. My love and condolences to any of the kids that went to the bridge while I have been AWOL. :) I hope you are all feeling well and happy. Message-ID: <20090808.225028.22461.0@webmail07.dca.untd.com> I went to see G-force on Tues. with my hubbie. It was cute & quite funny! I couldn't believe how real they looked! I enjoyed it alot, although the pessimistic side of me was picking apart the movie inside my head. All I can picture is kids at home trying to re-enact the movie stunts & thinking piggies can survive falls, swim or any of the other hundred unrealistic things our piggie heroes do in the movie. I can see some little girl, like the one in the movie, painting her piggie's toes & putting a dress & lipstick on her. And the boy...well he was just evil! Flinging that poor piggie across the room like he did & putting him in a remote car. I *hated* that boy! I wish they would have made the piggies do more "piggie-like" things, like wheek or walk on all fours instead of 2 legs most of the time. I liked the mice alot "poop in his hand, poop in his hand!" & the disgruntled, angry hamster (kinda reminded me of my hammie Daisy!) Speckles the mole & the fly were a nice touch too. I liked the "get your butt outta my face, get your face outta my butt" line too. All in all I liked it, I just worry about the effect it will have on our furry friends. Hopefully if any of us sees an opportunity to educate we can help some. ~Jaime & Mimi~ ~Missing Molly, Radar, Albert & Daisy~ http://piggiepages001.blogspot.com/ ____________________________________________________________ Top Lawn Care Pros Free bids from lawn care experts. It's been a really weird experience for the last couple of days. I am actually doubting now that she did swallow a the cherry pit. She is fine and back to her normal self. she has not passed the pit, she is pooping regularly and has her enormous appetite back. I do know that we had been feeding them a little too much fruit in the past weeks and we have since cut back significantly. I think what may have happened was that the last piece of fruit that we gave her spiked her blood sugar and she went into shock. We are now watching how much fruit we are giving the piggies and Cocoa is looking a lot better. Thank you for all you help and concern. I found Rimadyl (also known as Carprofen) to be helpful to my guinea pig when he was poorly, but there is an important warning with this drug. If your guinea pig is known to, or suspected of, having kidney or liver damage, then this drug is not suitable. (Increased thirst can be a sign of kidney problems -- but there could be other reasons, too.) My guinea pig was given Rimadyl, and in less than 5 to 6 weeks, died of kidney failure. (He did not have a life-threatening illness for requiring the Rimadyl.) I cannot tell you for absolute certain what the cause of his kidney failure actually was, as he was not autopised, but I feel it's important to alert owners with a gp with kidney/liver damage to avoid Rimadyl if it were offered. However, I am aware that Rimadyl is usually extremely well-tolerated by guinea-pigs. Pain relief is very important to an unwell gp. I don't have any pigtures of him or them together on my computer yet, but when I do I will post them here. I adopted him from a nice family that just did not have the time for him. He's much bigger than S'mores and between 1-2 years old. When I introduced them, I used the Bath method from http://www.cavyspirit.com. It worked really well and they became friends right away. I am calling him "Zoot" after a character from one of my favorite shows, "The Tribe". It's so cute to see S'mores snuggle up to his big brother when he hears a loud noise or anything else that scares him. Zoot is a real lap pig, which balances out S'more's hyper personality. He is a little bit on the chubby side though, does anyone recommend anything to fix that, or would it be better to take him for a check-up and have the vet perscribe us a diet plan? ?Tiffy (and S'mores, Zoot, Fishies, Kitties, and Tortoise) -- Be Yourself @ mail.com! As some of you know, I work at one of the Shriners Hospitals which was on a "hit list" to be closed. I am very happy to say that during their meeting the first week of July, the Imperial Shrine Council voted all six Shriners Hospitals that were on the list to remain open. What wonderful news for patients and their families! These facilities are much needed and surrounding communities near these hospitals really rallied to save them. For that, I am very grateful. Internal adjustments have been and will still be made, but for right now things are okay. Other happy news includes the addition of another piggy to my furbaby family. His name is Striper. He is a year and a half, smooth haired, and tan and white. His owner was seven years old and simply lost interest in him. I have had him for about two months now. He is a very sweet, active, popcorner -- and he has a BIG appetite! He is very healthy, so there is no doubt that he will be with me for quite a while. I also wanted to report that I was in PetSmart yesterday. I usually order my hay from Al at Sweetmeadow Farms - which is a wonderful, family run business. Al's hay, prices, and the customer service I receive is the best. With that said, on occasion I run low or out of hay and have to buy it at the store which is what has happened this weekend. I went to PetSmart and (the ones in my area) now carry Oxbow. For those of you out there that use Oxbow and have a PetSmart in your area -- you may want to give it a check. Oxbow at PetSmart is on sale till the end of August with a PetPerks card. I am not sure if that is for all areas, but it worth a check. It beats the heck out of shipping and handling! Well, -- that is all for now. I hope everyone enjoys the remainder of the summer. Molly was a wonderful, sweet girl, with a beautiful personality. She was everypig's mom. She had 4 babies in 2004, after I brought her home from Humane Society of Pinellas, where she was rescued from a school breeding program. Dana has Mina & Lucy, my vet's receptionist adopted her little boy, Rex (who has since passed on) & we have Emma. Molly also was a great mom to Winnie & Lily, the Little Girls we adopted last June. Molly was diagnosed last year with malocclusions by my vet in Palm Harbor, Fl. of 7 1/2 years. Every time I brought the girls in for nail trims, I had my vet check her teeth for overgrowth--& every time, he put Molly under anesthesia to trim them--every 6 weeks to 2 months. I brought the girls in on 6/23/09 for their usual manicures & had the vet check Molly's teeth--as usual, he put her under anesthesia to trim them. At this point, I noticed she slowed down on her eating--she wanted to eat, just didn't seem able to so I figured it was her teeth. I brought her back 6 days later & the vet found an ovarian cyst--he drained it (under more anesthesia) & he said that must have been making her feel lousy--she should be fine, it wasn't anything to do with her teeth.. Now she Stopped Eating so I started syringing Critical Care! I brought her to another vet in Tampa on 7/7& he also said her teeth were fine & DX'd her with renal failure due to her dramatic weight loss. He did lab work under anesthesia (CBC, which he claimed was the only blood sample he could get from her due to dehydration--a chemistry profile would have shown renal failure, not a CBC, & the lab work could have been done by overcutting a nail, not going for the jugular vein.) I brought her back to the Tampa vet 4 days later, & he did Xrays--under anesthesia. They came back negative. In desperation, I put Molly's condition out on the GPDD & was lucky enough to get an answer from Ann Evans--& OMG, Ann is in Tampa, only a 30 minute drive from me! I got Molly to Ann on 7/21/09--Ann was horrified at Molly's incisors, they were overgrown to the point that she couldn't open her mouth to eat! I was right! Ann trimmed them (without anesthesia) & we hoped for the best--she put Molly on Metatonic, Immodium since Molly had diarrhea by then & I continued the CC feedings. We were hopeful. On Sunday, 7/26, Molly suffered a series of strokes, I called Ann at home & we started her on calcium plus D therapy. Bottom line, it just wasn't meant to be for my poor girl--I made the horrible decision to have her put to sleep at our next appointment on Tuesday, 7/28. Molly might have recovered somewhat from the strokes with the calcium & D therapy, but she wasn't going to recover from the liver damage caused by so much anesthesia--poor Molly was just wasting away, even with 4-5 times/day CC feedings. She went peacefully with her whole family present (Ann is family by now & was with us throughout it all.) Molly is buried next to Potter & they're hopefully having a ball at the Bridge. My major point in relating all this medical info is that I don't want anyone to go thru what we have had to deal with for the past 6 weeks. I have gotten a huge amount of cavy education from Ann over the past 6 or 7 weeks--she's an amazing, dedicated rodentologist & we're so blessed to have her in our corner. DO NOT allow your piggie to be put under anesthesia for anything but major surgery--lab work, Xrays lipoma-diagnosing & teeth trims CAN be done without anesthesia. Emma just had Xrays on Friday to DX a bladder stone, which she unfortunately has, tho a very small one--but it was done without anesthesia & she was fine, not stressed at all. I have been stupid for 7 1/2 years & just let my previous vet call the shots--no more. Ann works with an incredible vet, Dr. Frank Bonsack, Adventure Animal Hospital on Jackson Springs Road in Tampa (just off of Sheldon Road)--phone # 813-885-3888. They work in conjunction with each other, they're a wonderful team. Ann volunteers at Dr. Bonsack's office as a cavy health advisor & she's a wealth of piggie info. She has spent innumerable hours on the phone, emailing & in the office with me & my girls--Dr. Bonsack has also devoted a huge amount of time, over and above his usual office visit time, to treating my girls & talking to me. If you're happy with your pig vet, great--if you feel the need to change vets, this is the place to go. If you just want a second opinion, Ann & Dr. Bonsack are the people to call & ask questions of--they're happy to help, no strings attached. If anyone in the Tampa Bay area wants to know which vets I have gone to that I'm not happy with, just email me privately--like I said, I don't want anyone to go thru what we went thru & I'm open to letting you know who to stay away from, due to our experiences. Sorry to be so long-winded--Deb, Emma, Winnie & Lily (& Potter & Molly, always with us) From jaggs4 at sbcglobal.net Mon Aug 10 09:47:12 2009 From: jaggs4 at sbcglobal.net (ANDREW SILL) Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2009 06:47:12 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Gpdd] Misc: happy Birthday Isabel!! It always horrifies me that the majority of vets will anaesthetise piggies for the most minor procedures and are usually unwilling to agree that it is unnecessary. Until one meets a Rodentologist and discovers how easily teeth can be trimmed while the piggy is conscious, it is all too feasible to believe a vet who insists otherwise. How can they think that it is in a piggy's best interest to be subjected to so much anaesthetic? I am so glad that you live near to Ann, who will be able to help your piggies in future and that you have access to that wonderful vet. Every pig should be so blessed. My Piggyfriends are so lucky to live only a 45 minute drive away from two brilliant Rodentologists here in England. Our sincere condolences on the loss of dear Molly. You have been through a very rough time, and as well as feeling bereaved, you must be exhausted. I have suffered sort of similar experiences with a couple of my beloved piggies - the teeth were maloccluded, too much injectable anaesthetic, etc. I will never again allow my vets to use anaesthesia, if not required. I have the bucchal pad separators and teeth files from Vedra, and purchased a pair of the correct scissors on eBay, of all places. If a piggy needs anaesthesia - the best is to use isofluorane - don't let them use anything but that. It is a gas which quickly leaves their system once surgery is over. It is very hard to convince vets that piggies do not need anaesthesia to have their teeth trimmed, and if you are lucky enough to find a vet with that sort of knowledge, you have won "Lotto", so to speak. I am lucky to have found such a vet. Ann is indeed a wonderful piggy person with lots of knowledge and care in her heart, and I'm pleased you were able to make contact with her - even though the ultimate outcome was that Molly passed away. I would imagine that Molly was a tired little girl, after all the poking and prodding & sticking of needles - she probably just wanted to walk down that beautiful road to the rainbow bridge for some peace, love, fun and no more pain. I pray that you soon find some comfort over your loss, and please know that myself and my 9 masters are thinking of you at this sad time. I am soooo Happy that you have opened up your Heart and your Home to that adorable, little piglet. And I'm happy that Tribble is doing Better too. Give your newest addition some Special Welcome Kisses from me and my crew... Wheeeeeeeek! WELCOME Aeryn!!! P.S. I really like her name, by the way. Very Original. Love 'n Wheeeeeeeeeeps, Princess Snowflake, Bertie Pig, & meeeeeee :D ******************************************************************** There is a new addition to my little herd! Her name is Aeryn. As with most people, I had NO intention of getting a new piggie at this time. Tribble is poorly but on the mend. My life is crazy with system updates at work. My elderly parents need more of my time than ever. But then came the big guinea pig surrender. Someone in the Charleston, SC area (where I live) gave up over 30 piggies. The Charleston Animal Society kept them for a short time but needed the space for cats and was going to euthanize them! A local pet store took them all and has been working to get them to a guinea pig no kill shelter. I went to make a donation and made the mistake of looking at the pigs. There was a piggie off by herself. She had lost her premature pups and was pining. Well, she was mine. I took her home named her Aeryn. She is nearly all black with a white blaze and some small tan patches. She is so little next to my older pigs. She can't be more than 6 months old. She had found her forever home and I hope she will be a happy piggie soon. The points being that one should always no the possible side effects of any drug. Also, that each cavy is an individual and any medication choices and dosages must be tailored to that patient. In fact I had mentioned to Deb the slave to Emma, Winnie & Lily that I should of included more information in my post about Rimadyl. Since I am a pharmaceutical scientist and a long term student of Vedra Stanley-Spatcher of the Cambridge Cavy Trust and Guinea Pig Hospital, I tend to write very short and to the point emails. Vedra writes her emails in the same manner. I should NOT assume that everyone is going to know or educate themselves about drugs prescribed to cavies. I have told many cavy slaves that almost all of the drugs that are used in cavies were not developed for them. Therefore, when a vet prescribes a drug for your cavy that was developed for cats and dogs this is called off label prescribing and is totally legal. When you read a veterinary formulary about the use of Rimadyl in cavies the dosages that are reported were arrived at through the personal experimentation of veterinarians. In most cases no clinical trials were done for the use of that drug for the treatment of cavies. Therefore, from one formulary to another you will see different dosages reported for the use of Rimadyl or any other drug, since different data sets or experiences from different vets are being used to set the dosage range and route of administration. When I post about the use of a drug in cavies, I am using the data set that Vedra has established. I am not an expert. I try to learn something new every day. Many members of the GPDD have educated me about cavy health care. I feel that one of the strengths of the GPDD is that everyone has the chance to post their experiences and share their knowledge with this international community of Cavy Lovers. I appreciate that Carole shared with us her personal and painful story about the loss of her cavy from kidney failure. Sincerely, Ann and the Rescued Piggys of Piggyville, Tampa Florida USA. Mimi has had a sonogram, x-ray & tooth check without anesthesia. I was aloud to be with her & hold her & talk to her during these things & I think that helped keep her calm. I am moving on short notice and can not take them with me right away. I have tried booking them on the plane with me and the airlines have made it completely impossible. I need to find someone who would take my two beautiful little piggies into their home on a temporary basis so that when I am settled I can book a pet shipping Co. to pick them up at your door step. I would of course compensate this person on any expenses like food, bedding, and any other expenses that come up. Both Pigs are healthy and strong. they live in a 2X4 cube C&C cage. We just went into a scare with Cocoa Tiramisu, as you all might know, but she's back to her old self now and doing just fine. If anyone is in the North Jersey area and would be willing to enjoy the presence of two little bundles of joy for about a month and a half I would be in utter gratitude for your hospitality. I am leaving in less than a week so please respond as soon as you can if you are interested. You should be so proud that Becky reached 16 years old! That is a wonderful age, and she was so lucky to have had 16 beautiful & loving years with you...... what a lucky girl she was. She is now sleeping peacefully - she's in eternity Joanne, and you will indeed be seeing her again when we all end up there one day. I understand your pain and also can feel your pain Joanne...... I have first hand experience at having to help my Tess (dog) to the Bridge just after she had turned 15 years old, that was back in 2001. I knew the time had come when she stopped showing interest in food (her greatest love apart from me), {she also had a terminal liver disease} and I knew I had to let her go. I had the vet come to my home because I wanted Tess to be in familiar surroundings - she hated going to visit the vet so much! I stayed with her whilst the vet gave her that injection, I held her head, she looked up at me with her beautiful brown eyes, and I know she knew what was happening and thanking me for our love and for helping her on her trip to paradise. She peacefully slipped away into God's loving care. You had Becky for such a long time - 16 years is amazing - it will definitely feel like you have lost a daughter. Our pets are our lives - especially dogs - they become true family members. Becky is with my Tess now, Joanne, and every other wonderful, furry gift from God that has gone before us. She is in glorious paradise, watching over you, sending her love to you still. Do not worry Joanne, she is still in good hands - just not your hands anymore, but in the safe and loving hands of our Lord. I cannot comfort you at this time with words. (I wish I was there to give you a big hug) .... but I am praying for God to send his Angel to wrap her wings around you and hug you until you feel better able to cope with your loss. I have been reading a bit about Peter Gurney's suggestions with guinea pigs. I know that cranberry juice (pure) is the best for them in need, that it helps dissolve stuff (I think) in the urinary tract like it does in people. I will read up on that and also I think he said that boiling your own barley water from pearl barley and giving them that will help since it is a demulcent. I am not British although my ancestors were, but I do recall the song from Mary Poppins (which I loved) by Jane and Michael Banks, regarding their Nanny specifications, "and never smell of bar-ley wa-ter"....well, I guess it works...anyway, I have great empathy and my heart goes out to you for your loss of Snowy Bear. I know how it feels to love a guinea pig with all your heart. They do not live in the physical world very long and there is a reason for that. I do not want to get too spiritual here but I do believe in reincarnation and that the animals do not have any problem going in and out of the physical world. Humans do, however, but we do not have to have such a problem with it. We (Whee) as humans seem to be cursed with the ability to reason and discern. If your passion is animals like mine is, what goes along with it is an intense emotional, nurturing caretaking state of being. I recall when my Li'l Guy was, as the vet said, critically dying, I had come home from work and found him in a very bad way, all convulsing etc. I called the vet who said to try to make him feel comfortable and what did I have in my medicine cabinet? not too much stuff. I ended up giving him a tiny bit of melatonin, ibuprofin, and zoloft, and then it ws like he went to sleep. I still was in so much denial that I just did not believe he had crossed over. I always thought I could have done something more. He was at least 6, maybe 7. I always think it is important that we know what are the best vegies for guineas and --as with ourselves--remember that none of us are immortal here on planet earth. The spiritual giants state that if we want to affect our pets health in a positive way, then just think good thoughts when you are around the animal, about anything. Humans tend to become very attached (I know I was) and it makes it so hard to let go. Corrine, I do encourage you to let yourself feel your feelings about Snowy Bear, and whee love you and hope you know that Snowy Bear was lucky to have you. When they are ready to go, to Rainbow Bridge, there are just some things that e have no control over and like me and all the others on the Gpdd you did the best you could with your beloved piggie. Snowy will forgive you and of that I am certain. It is the hardest for us who have the human condition to allow us to forgive ourselves...but we can do it, and all will be better because of it. It is our choice. I have so much to tell you about!! As you know, Sammy and I arrived safely here on the beautiful Black Pearl. You should see it! It's soooo big and all the sails are furled... but I don't know what that means. Lots of food and lots of stuff to drink. Some of it smells kind of funny but if you drink a lot of it, you sort of feel funny too. Sammy found a spy glass rolling around on the deck and decided that it was put there so she could spy on Fugly to se what he has been up to when she is not around. She really didn't know how to use it but finally figured out that you unscrew the end of it, throw it overboard and back into the tube that is left so you can peek out from the end and look at everybody and no one knows that you are in there. Cool, huh? The only problem with it is that it keeps rolling around and around because of the waves and you know how Sammy is with motion sickness! She came out, looking kind of confused and very, very green! She said that all she saw was Fugly pinching Igor on the bottom! She said he kind of jumped and squeaked and rubbed his bottom and gave Fugly a very funny look. She said that her rival, Mary, has been behaving pretty well but if she finds out that there's any truth to the rumor that Mary has pinched Fugly's furry little bottom, there's gonna' be one big fight; and I don't think she means virtual, either! Word has it that there is going to be a wedding between Jody and Shipwreck Sam!! Oooooh, I'm all shivvery just thinking of it. Brrrrr. Jody has a really beautiful sparkly ring thing on her toe and you should just see Samantha looking (glaring?) at it. I think she is jealous of it but I'm not gonna' say that to her! I don't want her chasing me around this deck. It gets kind of slippery sometimes and I don't want to be the first Piggy Overboard on this voyage! One last thing.... in case you get a really big bill from a store, don't worry about it. Sammy and me went by Pirates-B-We and picked up a few things. They had everything in the world that a good piggy pirate could need or want to have a fun pirate adventure. We promise to give up one of our favorite treats for a while in order to pay back the bill to you. Honest. Well, sort of. Well, maybe. Uhm, we'll talk about it later, OK? With lots of love and hugs and whisker kisses from me and Sammy, Tabitha P.S. All the other piggies are saying to tell you to let all the other slaves know that everyone is fine and having a wonderful time. Hershey and Igor sound as if they have been drinking that funny drink. Hi Corrine & Michael, Just read your GPDD email about our Secret Pal, Snowy Bear. Poor little guy. Sorry I don't know of any medical illustrations of the guinea pig right off the bat. I have seen one on theinternet before, but will have to see if I can find it. I used to have it bookmarked on my old computer, and I don't know how to find my backup files from there. About the Metacam, I'll share with you what my vet said: It makes a better quality of life. It is true that it can somewhat shorten their lifespan, but the life that he has will be more comfortable. And if you only do this for a few days, it is probably no risk at all. My little guy Snowball had to take Metacam for about 3-5 days each month after his teeth trims. But I could tell he was much more comfortable. And that way the vet gave him almost two years longer than he would have had with no medication. Keep us posted. Again, there aren't many or any gp savvy vets here. So we have no choice pretty much. Anyway, she wanted to do exploratory surgery. She said by the xray and the ultrasound she can't tell where the blockage is. She said she doubts he'd last the weekend with a blockage. So we didn't have any choice, or so it seemed. So we reluctantly agreed to the surgery. When the surgery was done, she told us that she removed numerous stones from the bladder. But she couldn't reach the one in the ureter (sp?). So, and she gave the medical term for it even though I've never heard of it before in my life but she said she's done it on dogs and cats but this is her 'first guinea pig'--SHE CUT OF HIS PENIS. She said that was the ONLY way to get to the blockage. I was beyond appalled!!! My Snowy Bear was running around and eating and drinking today. He seemed to be doing rather well. And now a little while ago, we picked him up and his bottom is all bloody from the penis site. He is obviously in a lot of pain. She said she thought we'd like to take care of him for the next twenty four hours which are critical. We said we would rather than their staff because no one is onsite during the evenings. I can imagine the horrible pain he must be in. She mentioned a pain killer, I forget the name, sorry, but I don't remember it either. But anyway, I am so sick and I wish I could turn back time. Upon handing him to me, she smiled and said to me, I hope he makes it! I couldn't get out of there fast enough. She had done a little good for another piggie of ours before, but after this, I'm just shaking with rage. True, I don't know if my little guy could have gone on with the blockage for much longer, but this way is just too much. I can't even begin to say how furiously mad I am! Like I said, there aren't any piggie savvy vets around here, obviously. If there is, it is TOTALLY **MY** FAULT for not finding that vet for my little precious. I cannot believe (but I do believe you) that your vet would have had the nerve to have done such a radical surgical procedure without your permission. I suppose that by the time you receive this, you'll know whether or not it was a sound decision on her part. Did she give you any instructions to help the bleeding. If not, call her, even if it's in the middle of the night if her home phone is listed. Do you have something soft bedding wise --a folded sheet or anything non-irritating to put in his cage or where ever he sleeps -- as opposed to pine chips and the like. I use baby receiving blankets for my guys and started the practice after an accident. If you can stop the bleeding without causing what's left of the penis, if there is anything remaining, to obstruct, maybe he has a chance. And do give him pain medication. My adult daughter is staying with me and came out here a few minutes ago. I told her about the situation, myself crying for you and little Snowy Bear. She told me that that's what her vet wanted to do for her cat and create an outlet for the urine higher up. To her regret and sadness, she did not have the $1,200.00 for the surgery but she thinks that maybe she would have tried it. Then again, she said, given her kitty's age, even if she'd had the $ she's not certain that she'd have put him through surgery. So she has some ambivalence there. But her vet has been a good one. So apparently this practice is used for larger animals. Incidentally, she had her kitty put to sleep because of its discomfort and obstruction though the vet had been able to successfully treat him in the past with medications, etc. But this time the former remedies didn't work. She still misses the kitty greatly, just as we do our piggies when one is lost. But this surgical procedure on a little guinea pig? It's done now. We can only pray that it works. Please let me know how the little guy is doing and whether he's made it this far or not. Aside from the absolute horror of what she's done, had his bladder remained obstructed and had it burst or ruptured, he would have died a very unpleasant death. If he's still alive but truly miserable, not healing and declining in health, you still have the option of helping him to the Bridge. Please, in no way is this your fault. I am just heartsick for you, your hubby and particularly little Snowy Bear. By the way, you spoke of him running around, eating and drinking -- was that before the surgery or after it? The piggy pirates are sending all kinds of healing wheeks to Snowy Bear, and I am praying for him as well -- and for you two also. What ever the outcome, you did the best that you could based on the information you had. You would have never, in your wildest dreams, expected her to amputate his penis. And yet, now that it's done, I fervently pray that this experimental surgery works. Feeling sick inside along with you, Alge ************** An Excellent Credit Score is 750. Since Snowy Bear was all white, a teddy, and a guy, sometimes we referred to him as 'the white dude.' We brought him home from the vet's AFTER SHE CUT HIS PENIS OFF, and I was horrified that his bottom was bloody but there was a hole where his penis was so I guess that was 'normal' for that procedure. We put him on soft baby blankets which were on a heating pad and also a portable heater to keep him warm. I kept telling him I love him and would kiss him on the nose. He kept turning away from me so I said to him,I guess now you hate me, well, that's okay, because I hate me too. IF the vet had called and asked if she could do what she did, I would have said NO. This morning and afternoon, Snowy Bear was actually better even though he was still 'blocked.' He was actually drinking on his own, something he hadn't done in days. He was eating on his own and actually chowed down on some fresh foods I picked for him from the garden. Whenever I put him down on the floor he'd go walking around exploring. He was so full of life! Now, three hours after bringing him home, after his 'surgery' he's gone. I mean I was screaming hysterically, poor Michael tried his best to comfort me, but I'm sure I could have been heard for miles as I was crying and screaming, I'M A MURDERDER!!! I MURDERED MY LITTLE BOY!!! I love Snowy Bear with all my heart, I just want to turn back time and say, No, don't do the surgery. We had found another vet after this one because she didn't seem to know much. But the second one we had didn't know much either but at least he'd always say so. But he managed to help us with minor things. He said Snowy Bear would require surgery and that since he's so small, he wasn't willing to do it. So he said we'd have to find someone else willing to do it. Well, we tried the first vet we had, and this is what happened. *I* called her. *I*'m the one responsible for his being MURDERED. I mean how can something like this happen? Today he was full of life and spunk! and now he's bloodied with a hole and gone? It doesn't make any sense and SNOWY BEAR DIDN'T DESERVE THIS. I just want my little 'white dude' back! I want to feel him cuddle into my neck, he's the only piggie that ever did that to me. He'd sit on a pillow on my lap as I used the computer. He'd sometimes nap with me. He kept me company. Now he's gone and IT'S ALL MY FAULT. I said to Michael that I don't think I should have piggies as I seem to murder them. This was the most brutal in my book. I don't think I can live with myself. I hope to remember some better moments for my little Snowy Bear later. But sorry to bore everyone. I guess it helps me to 'talk' about it to people who understand. I have been reading a bit about Peter Gurney's suggestions with guinea pigs. I know that cranberry juice (pure-no sugar) is the best for them in need, that it helps dissolve stuff (I think) in the urinary tract like it does in people. I will read up on that and also I think he said that boiling your own barley water from pearl barley and giving them that will help since it is a demulcent. I am not British although my ancestors were, but I do recall the song from Mary Poppins (which I loved) by the kids, Jane and Michael Banks, of their Nanny specifications: "and never smell of bar-ley wa-ter"....well, I guess it works... I have great empathy and my heart goes out to you for your loss of Snowy Bear. I know how it feels to love a guinea pig with all your heart. They do not live in the physical world very long and there is a reason for that. I do not want to get too spiritual here but I do believe in reincarnation and that the animals do not have any problem going in and out of the physical world. Humans do tend to, however, but we do not have to have such a problem with it. Whee as humans seem to be cursed with passion and reason. If your passion is animals like mine is, what goes along with it is an intense emotional, nurturing state of being. When my Li'l Guy was, as the vet said, 'critically dying', I had come home from work late at night, and found him convulsing etc. I called the vet who said try to make him comfortable, what did I have in my medicine cabinet? not too much. I ended up giving him a tiny bit of something I had, to take away any pain...it was like he went to sleep. I just did not believe he had crossed over. I thought I could have done something more. He was at least 6, maybe 7. I always think it is important to know of the best vegies for guineas and --as with ourselves--remember that none of us are immortal here on planet earth. The spiritual giants state that if we want to affect our pets health in a positive way, then just think good thoughts when you are around the animal, about anything. Humans tend to become very attached (I know I was), it makes it so hard to let go. Corrine, I do encourage you to grieve about Snowy Bear, and hope you know that Snowy Bear was lucky to have you. When they are ready to go to Rainbow Bridge, there are just some things that we have no control over. Like me and all the others on the Gpdd you did the best you could with your beloved piggie. Snowy will forgive you and of that I am certain. It is the hardest for us who have the human condition to allow us to forgive ourselves...but we can do it, and all will be better because of it. It is our choice. Love, Ellen and Guineas 10, in memory of Li'l guy Antonio and Gin Gin P.S. I honestly know how you feel when you think you murdered your little boy but you didn't and I am so sure he wants you to forgive yourself. We need you in this world. Tons of guinea pigs need our help. Eventually we all move on, but for now, please try to consider the ones that are still here, and that they can give you love as well as you can to them. I know it isn't easy. please just try to reach for the best feeling thought you can find on the subject. With a bit of practice, you can remove a sebaceous cyst yourself - no need for any anaesthetic and the accompanying extortionate vet bill. Most piggies will sit quietly while you remove the cyst. They do not seem to notice what is being done and start munching as soon as the procedure is over. My Buttons had one recently and kept eating while the offending cyst was removed. I can recommend the barley water. Fiddly to make but a good demulcent for piggies with a UTI. Some piggies do not like cranberry juice neat so it can be diluted. Penny and the Piggyfriends. Since some of the girls im using were rescues this works out well. I was just wondering, is anyone else doing an experiment in regards to cavy intelligence? Do you want to share data or information? Or if you arnt experimenting any of this, does anyone have any advice to give me? Id love to get some global connections to share with my peers! And the other thing I wanted to share was I have a male who is very violent with my other boys. He lives by himself and has been watching them through the bars in his cage. Hes been getting more and more depressed living by himself, and its even escalated to the point where hes chewing his fur out on his legs and chest. (The vet checked, it isnt mites.) Im considering neutering him so I can get him a female companion. Im a little worried about the risks involved though. He is a year old and I have a small animal vet that can take care of him. Does anyone have any suggestions to help me? Any advice at this point would be greatly apreciated!! There is a small animal specialist on Maui--it is a husband and wife team--in Kula. Since I do not know which island you are on, I do not know what else to say as far as reference to this particular vet. I will say, however, that this vet's office is open six days a week and has an emergency phone number as well. Dr. Cindy, we call her by her first name, also cares for all the rabbits at the rabbit sanctuary on this island. She had neutered my first Guinea so that he could hang out with his girlfriend, and she has been known to have also spade a one pound chihuahua. I know that words do not give much comfort but I hope you will join us again on Gpdd, as it would be nice to know you and hope you have other guineas that you care for. Deb Ganley emailed me this morning at 02:15 Tampa Florida time about a Boar named Boomer in Hawaii. Castration can be done very safely if done correctly. I think it would be a good idea to get Boomer a girlfriend 4 weeks post castration. Spaying a female cavy is far more dangerous. I am sure you know that a 1.0 kilo cavy only has approximately 70 ml of blood which is about 4 tablespoons of blood. Therefore, castration is far less invasive surgery than removing the ovaries and both horns of the uterus. Cavy Castration Protocol Below is a link for the castration protocol that most USA trained vets have the highest success rate. I have spoken to many vets about how they go about castrating. This info comes from Cavy Spirit. I think you will find it very interesting and informative. http://www.cavyspirit.com/neutering.htm However, Vedra Stanley-Spatcher of the Cambridge Cavy Trust and Guinea Pig Hospital in her book ?Diagnostic Guide to Guinea Pig Problems? has a chapter on Castration (page 57). It also covers Aggression and the use of Dog Appeasing Pheromones (D.A.P.) unit. She also covers castration on page 65 in her discussion of surgery. Castration will not stop aggressive behavior it only stops reproduction. Vedra?s pre-op medication is 10 mg Rimadyl that is equivalent to a 0.2 ml SQ injection of Rimadyl 50mg/ml solution as the pre anesthetic pain medication. Induction with 3.0% iso/servoflurane for anesthesia and maintenance with 1.5-2.0% isoflurane. After induction she uses an empty 1ml syringe to suck out any surplus fluid from the back of the throat. Only if the cavy has noisy breathing she may give 0.1 - 0.2 ml injection SC of 5% Lasix. The patient is placed on a microwaveable hot pad that has been heated for only 1 minute. It should be warm not hot. After surgery she turns off the isoflurane and flushes the cavy with oxygen, puts a smear of Vicks vapour rub on the nose and has them back on their feet and eating within 10-15 minutes after surgery. I have used this surgical protocol many times for various surgeries without any problems. Vedra NEVER uses TORBUGESIC, KETAMINE or REGLAN for surgery, even bladder surgery. Vedra believes that a boar should be 8-18 months old before castration. The scrotal fat pads are NEVER re-inserted. Vicryl 2-0 is the only suture material that she uses. Rimadyl is given post-operatively for pain. Dose: 10 mg PO 6 hours after surgery. Vedra gives Rimadyl 5 mg PO q12h for 3 days post surgery. Also on the day of surgery the cavy is started on antibiotics. Dose: 2.5% Baytril 0.5 ml PO q12h for 5 days. The Baytril must be mixed with juice of very thin Critical Care. She occasionally feeds Critical Care 1 teaspoon plus 2 teaspoons of water in a bowl twice a day for 5 days. Remember Critical care contains probiotics and the cavy may go off food directly after surgery but should not go off food if everything is done correctly. Ideally the Critical Care is given 2 hours after the antibiotic. I rarely need to use Oxbow's Critical care unless the cavy was not in good condition prior to surgery. Castration is elective surgery so Boomer should be in top shape before he is castrated. You can buy Vedra's book at the following link. She accepts PayPal. http://www.britishassociationofrodentologists.co.uk/Products.html Please feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions. I am a long time student of Vedra's. In fact I suspect that I have been a student of hers before you were born. Regarding intelligence. Read Peter Gurney's books especially his last book which was published by one of his guinea pigs after his death. Gurney, Peter (April 2007). Last of Their Kind. Diggory Press. ISBN 978-1846856570. He told me that his cavies and Vedra taught him everything he knows about cavy health care. Cheers, Ann and the Rescued Piggys of Piggyville, Tampa Florida USA. Have you actually seen him chewing his own coat? There are other reasons why his coat could be falling out. He could be irritated by lice or a fungal condition. I saw a cavy at my Rodentologists last week who had vast bald patches and this had been caused by a fungal problem which was being treated. As for neutering, for me the risk would outweigh any conceivable benefit and I would never subject any of my boys to such a procedure. The only time that I have not been able to pair up two boars was with my Sam, who did not want to cohabit but lived happily next door to another pair of boars, with whom he loved to chat through the wire. Neutering will have no effect on Boomer's personality whatsoever but merely render him incapable of impregnating a sow. Do you think that Boomer would be friendly towards a sow or have somepig else with whom to fight? If you believe that neutering is right for him, please be sure that you have a very capable vet as any operation requiring an anaesthetic has its risks. Be sure that the vet uses Isoflurane or its sister, Sevoflurane, anaesthetic - the only safe ones for cavies. There is a lot of advice on Cavy Spirit and GuineaLynx. http://www.cavyspirit.com/neutering.htm http://www.guinealynx.info/links.html#neutering Do not put him with a sow until at least 3/4 weeks after the op. This gives plenty of time for any live sperm to die. Wishing you all the best. Penny and the Piggyfriends ( piggy sanctuary in England ). She's had two established piggies, and she was given the mother of the non dominant pig. Well, her dominant girl won't tolerate the new pig so she has to live separate. They are all in the same cage with one part sectioned off for the new girl so she doesn't get lonely. If you don't already have the same set up, you could try that with your boy. If that doesn't work, you'll just have to evaluate whether company is worth the risk. He's a bit bigger now. He loves Lofties, those square treats that are put in his food bowl. He was separated from Edgeworth and Flashbang Fatbottom at the time because the big pigs were trying to sit on him. He now has full range of the cage and has decided that he's top piggy. He shakes his rump very hard, but the other two pigs tend to ignore that. He's only half their size after all. :) Jocelyn, Edgeworth, Flashbang Fatbottom, and Benito From stefanieduffy at hotmail.com Tue Aug 18 09:18:39 2009 From: stefanieduffy at hotmail.com (Stefanie Duffy) Date: Tue, 18 Aug 2009 14:18:39 +0100 Subject: [Gpdd] RAINBOW BRIDGE : 3 Surrey Squeakers Message-ID: It always seems to happen with people who keep large numbers of piggies, that all the piggies stay healthy for months and months and then suddenly several of them go to The Bridge, even though there is no connection between the passings. I have lost three Squeakers in the last few days. I'm glad they waited for me to get back from holiday, because my son did a grand job of looking after them whilst we were away, and I would hate it if he blamed himself in any way. In fact, the only thing to blame is old age. The first to go was Scampi. She belonged to Peter Gurney and came to me, age unknown but definitely not young, over 3 years ago. She had huge brown eyes and golden hair and looked like a giant hamster. She was plagued with skin problems and had more baths than any other guinea pig I've ever owned, but she behaved impeccably and even enjoyed them. She was not ill and was probably still LAPS, but I found her lying in the pen with her head resting on a cabbage. The second to go was Mickey, my only male. He came to me aged three and a half, having been a much loved, lone, indoor pet. His owners weren't allowed to put him on the plane when they emigrated to Australia, and so he was neutered and then instantly adapted to an outdoor life here amongst a harem of girls. He was a strong character and was very into feng shui. He would rearrange the food bowls and turn them upside down and taught the others in his pen to do likewise. He'd been here for nearly 4 years, so he was well over 7. He was very wobbly towards the end but enjoyed life right up to his last day. The third to go was Scrumpy. Scrumpy was a satin piggy and was always so dainty that I called her my "size zero" piggy. She was the last of four satins that I took in 3 or 4 years ago. They were supposed to be aged 3 or 4 then, so perhaps this is some sort of record for a satin. (None of them developed OD, thankfully). Scrumpy's hair looked so beautiful glistening in the sunshine. Meet up over the bridge little ones. Mickey will take charge, I'm sure. I also hope Scampi tells Peter Gurney all about her later life. I am apprehensive about doing anything like that myself, I trust the vet very much. They at the animal care hospital and wellness center, had my rex guinea pig Rufie, [who by the way has chirped on two different occasions], for one morning and they did an excellent job. the vet had to suture the site, the cyst was just above Rufie's behind, practically right on his grease gland. Does anyone know if these show up always on the grease gland? Anyway, for a human it would have been about the size of a doorknob, and I am clue-free when it comes to surgery, i mean, i faint. So the price to pay was worth it to me but I do thank you over there, Penny in the British Isles. I have been reading up on the Gpdd--i have some i saved in my God folder. i was just reading one Penny posted about worming. I had my guineas checked for parasites both external and internal, results were negative for the external, but Angel-daddy had some mites. The vet recommended Adams flea and tick powder, which I had used before, when Gin Gin had mites, but the company has discontinued the powder, although they do have the mist, which seems to do well, but it smells like bad hairspray. As for outdoor parasites, I don't think so, for us, because I have everypig inside, we live on the second floor of an apartment complex; we don't get out much LOL. I was thinking of getting some fresh sod as a treat. There was something on the news a while back that some people in Hawaii were eating fresh vegies from their garden that they had not washed. they had not washed the vegies. They got some parasite called something like "Rat Lungworm" and were comatose. It sounded like the worst thing to get. All because they did not wash their garden vegies. I do not know what the outcome was, and had forgotten about it until just now. So everyone and everypig, please wash your garden vegies, just start doing this every time. _________________________________________________________________ With Windows Live, you can organize, edit, and share your photos. http://www.windowslive.com/Desktop/PhotoGallery From elmga at hotmail.com Thu Aug 20 08:44:24 2009 From: elmga at hotmail.com (ellen garrison) Date: Thu, 20 Aug 2009 02:44:24 -1000 Subject: [Gpdd] Misc. -I am silly Message-ID: Hi all, I meant to sign my last post about cysts and parasites. But, you should be proud that they all were a ripe old age, and obviously were well loved and cared for and had a wonderful life here on earth. How wonderfully proud you must have been to be able to help out and adopt one of Peter Gurney's piggies following his passing. He sure had some pretty piggies. I was lucky enough to purchase Peter Gurney's last book, which was published by his wife a little while ago. It has wonderful tales of Peter's learning to love piggies, and gorgeous photos of his beloved babies too. I must look it up and see if Scampi's photo is in the book. Gosh, you really had your hands full with so many squeakers, and even though you still have 18 left for comfort, you will still be sad and missing your other ones. Each little piggy holds a special place in our hearts don't they - no matter how many we might have. They are all individuals, with different personalities, different likes and dislikes, and some of them tell us about those dislikes in no uncertain terms! I've got 10 piggies, and at times when I'm not feeling the best I find them a bit of a handful - I spend a lot of time preparing their meals, (that's 9 bowls of veges/fruit), cleaning their cages, cleaning and drying their inner cages (I give them pig wams to sleep in at night, lined with a soft rag/old towel), then giving them floor time for each day, washing towels that they use to run around the floor on at the end of the day, hanging those towels out next morning, putting those towels away when dry...... but geez, I wouldn't give any of them away for all the tea in China! Each one has a different personality, each one knows me, they squeak at me when they see me coming or hear my voice; when I take Hugo out of his cage to put him on the floor in the morning he literally leaps like a kangaroo into my arms; Snowy is always asking me to cuddle him; when I cuddle Kimba he is instantly in gaga land, off with the pixies, fast asleep like a puppy in my arms, Wheeky is always kissing me on the lips(!), Donald kisses me then pulls my shirt very hard to tell me it's wee wee time, ....... etc. etc. How blessed we piggy slaves are, and I think we'd all agree that our masters are pretty lucky and blessed to have we slaves too! I pray my piggies live to a ripe old age like yours did Stefanie. To have them pass peacefully away and cross that Bridge of natural circumstances would make it so much easier - for me at leas t- to say goodbye. I do hope you soon find some comfort after losing 3 of your babies. You sound like a wonderful slave and a real trooper. You must never get any personal time of your own!! It is good to have a vet that you can trust. These are like gold dust here in England but we are very lucky to have a two wonderful rodentologists. Here, we use Ivermectin to kill mites on our piggies. I can buy it in a dropper bottle which dispenses exactly the right amount - 2 drops for an adult piggy, 1 drop for a smaller one over 3 months old - given orally. There have been discussions on this topic in the past and I remember that members in the US have posted about horse paste containing Ivermectin being used. No doubt one of our US members will advise you. Medications are very different between our two countries. I had to Google Adam's flea and tick powder as I have never seen this in England. It seems to be good for carpets, dogs and cats but wonder if it is safe for piggies. As these nasty mites live inside the piggy's skin, I do not think that a powder would be sufficient to dispose of them. Regards. Penny and the Piggyfriends. I weighed him, he has lost a tinsie bit of weight; but more particularly he feels lighter and I feel his ribs and shoulder joints. Not too bad though, still healthy, vibrant, his eyes look good, his hair is still shiny and healthy (not losing any extra), etc. As I thought about it, for the prior 3 or 4 days before I discovered the problem, he and Hamish hadn't finished their veges which are normally eaten before I cover them for bed! (Hamish has adenocarcinoma, was operated on in March 2008, & is still going strong. He's lost a little weight, but we are very happy with him. He is not sick at all). Then I remembered noticing their seed/pellets have not been going down very much from the bowl. I just put it down to the fact I'm giving them more grass - but obviously Hamish has been eating the grass, and Archie has been starving. He still can't eat, and now he's giving me heaps of trouble taking the syringe. In the week since I discovered the problem, he has lost a bit of weight now - he looks quite tiny and I can easily feel his ribs/hips, etc. I haven't weighed him, because, truthfully, I'm scared to know the result. The things that keep me going, give me a purpose in life, make me feel loved and important - are my piggies. My dear Donald is a piggy that is full of life and wants to eat - just can't. The full story with Donald is: He's been to two vets - our local lady who cut his molars with the bone rongeurs I bought from eBay believe it or not! (at Vedra's suggestion), and she also used the bucchal pad separators & teeth files which Vedra kindly sent to me when I went through all this with Archie in 2007. She did this without anaesthetic, at my request. The vet told me his tongue was totally entrapped by the molar teeth, and she cut a lot off (enough that I have kept them in a plastic bag - they were so very long). I continued with his Nilstat and baytril, thinking that a mouth infection could be the cause of the teeth overgrowing (as Vedra has said, a very very high percentage of malocclusion occurs because of mouth infections). I continued syringe feeding him Critical Care and some blended veges and vitamin C. I try to put grass into his mouth he takes it in to a certain point, then he'd sort of gag and pull it out with his teeth. I even tried shoving a small piece of cucumber to the back of the mouth to the molar region, but he spat that out too. Then...... when Donald couldn't even eat the syringe food (He'd gag at it), that's when I decided to take him to a supposed cavy savvy vet some hours drive from me. He used isofluorane (I forbid any other gas and said a definite no to injectable anaesthetic). He filed the molars down as far as he could, said there was no ulceration or sores in the mouth, and after I definitely said not to cut the incisors as they were fine (they hadn't become slanted and were still working fine - he went & cut them back a bit, supposedly so he he close his jaw properly. I still do not understand whey he did that, because now Donald cannot even pick up food, whereas before he could at least pick it up, even though he couldn't eat it. Then I rang the vet & had a go at him, he tried to explain his reasons about cutting the incisors, which I still couldn't comprehend over the phone. Then he talked about a chin sling and was going to inquire about that for me. In the meantime I rang my local vet to get some metacam for pain relief, and more Baytril, and continue to give him baytril, metacam and Nilstat for any fungal infection. I'm now back to syringe feeding Donald just like I did with Archie - and I'll be honest, I don't know if I can do this again!! All the pain & suffering & memories have come back with a vengeance, and the actions of little Donald are exactly a duplicate of the way Archie acted with me - nuzzling me, cuddling close to me, talking to me, etc. etc. I'm prepared to take Donald (oops.... nearly said Archie), back to the local vet and let her use isofluorane to get an x-ray and look down his mouth with a scope. The little soul wants desperately to eat - he shows interest in everything. The one curious thing is he will eat dried pine needles - which are so thin, but he does seem to be able to get them down. When I syringe some food into him, I feel his jaws, and he is using both sides of the jaw to grind. So I do not understand what the problem is. Does anyone have any ideas - could there be some blockage in the oesophagus? Has anyone heard of that happening before? I'm trying to be positive, but I just want to lie in bed and let sleep overtake me for a long time. I've decided I won't keep him lingering like I selfishly did with Archie....... I will help him over the Rainbow Bridge myself. Does any member know if there anything I can give my beloved piggy that I might have in my own medicine cabinet that might just put him to a sleep without causing any upset tummy pain, etc., a peaceful sleep that he never awakes from? Something that I can give him to overdose him so he can die peacefully in my arms, if it becomes necessary. I do not want him to have that horrid needle of execution. I'm quite beside myself with worry, desperation, fear, sadness and plain good old depression! Thanks for listening everyone....... please pray for Donald! I'm a real mess at the moment. When my piggy Fireball was having problems eating, it turns out to be an abscessing tooth. The vet found the abscess because there was a lump around his chin. Because of the abscess it was painful for little piggy to eat anything, although he kept trying, getting frantic when he tried to bite down on something and couldn't swallow it fully. It might not be an abscess, but it is one thing for the vet to check. I hope Donald gets better soon! Is he drinking? Try mixing some apple-juice with water to get some energy into him. I know what you are going through. I've been through it with my piggies. The X-Ray and the slight anesthetic they use in this case is not going to make him much worse than he is right now. I think you should give Donald every chance but do it as soon as possible. Please don't try putting him to sleep at home. There are too many things that can go wrong and cause him more suffering. Has the grass they were eating been washed? I know we have all kinds of rodents in our yard, not to mention the dreaded racoon germs, that can spread disease. I can only hope I'm washing their greens enough. But it is their Favorite Food. Does his tummy hurt when you press on it? Could he have a throat obstruction? Has Vedra made any suggestions? I'm so sorry you're going through this torment, and that's not a strong enough word for watching our little ones suffer. We live in a messed up world, and the child inside us knows things aren't as they should be and knows with equal certainty that there is a place just beyond a Bridge where things?are as originally intended. I hope you don't have to see Donald to that place, but I know he will thank you if he needs to go there. He'll let you know if and when it's time. Meanwhile, there's still hope. Needless to say, many of your GPDD friends and I are praying for the both of you. One day we noticed one of our g.pigs was not eating or drinking - so off to the vets, who could find nothing wrong. So we started syringe feeding/watering, and realised how much weight he'd lost, and how when we thought about it, we realised he'd been more and more picky over what he would eat in the month previously.? No change as the weeks went by, so we took him to another vet - still nothing wrong/teeth fine.? And so I sent for a chin-strap, which the g.pig did not like one bit.? We tried it a couple of times, but as we weren't sure whether this was what he needed anyway, we put it to one side. Weeks were passing, and I was reading up on the internet for ideas.? In the end I contacted Vedra at the Cambridge Cavy Trust,? who told me who my nearest rodentologist was, and suggested I tried a particular oral thrush gel, as sometimes g.pigs won't eat because they've got a sore throat, which we did, but it didn't make any difference. So off he went to stay with the rodentologist, who rang that evening to say it WAS his teeth, they were all overgrown, and she clipped them in a few minutes.? She then kept him for four weeks, to get him used to eating again, and to make sure nothing else was wrong with him, as well as to see if his teeth started to overgrow in that time.? They didn't.? And now he's home, good as new.? It seems 'ordinary' vets are just not trained to understand how guinea pig teeth are supposed to be, or to recognise where there's a problem. Her health was already compromised due to her young pregnancy and her stillborn babies not to mention being part of a big surrender. Tribble had bladder stone surgery Thursday, stayed the night at the vets, and I picked her up this afternoon. She was home about 3 hours when she died. She had very labored breathing and may have had some internal stitches pull loose due to the amount of blood that she passed when she died. She was an AMAZING guinea pig who lived to be nearly 7.5 years old. I miss her so much but now she is out of pain. There is a big Tribble shaped hole in my heart. Message-ID: <6D466AE3A9E54614B352CB397CB17A10@Darktwin> Oh Julie! We were so very awfully sorry to hear about Donald. After what you did for Archie, if anybody deserved years and years of trouble-free life with their other pigs, it was you. I wish I had more suggestions to offer you; we've been pretty lucky as far as problems with pigs and teeth, so we don't have much experience in that area. When our boys are on Baytril, we always make sure to give them pro-biotics too, but I'm sure you already know about that -- and with Baytril, I worry more about it making them lose their appetite, anyway. We also try to cut back to absolute basics as far as diet when the pigs are having troubles, and for us, that means no grass for them, because we're just not sure the grass from our yard is really free of chemicals and stuff. I never heard of a pig eating dried pine needles, but I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that if he's eating them, you probably want to keep letting him do that, just to keep in the habit of eating. (I don't actually know how many it would be safe for him to have.) I'm sorry it took me so long to catch up on your message, but we hope with all our hearts that things have gotten better in the mean time. Please let us know how he's doing, and we will keep you in our thoughts and in our hearts, Steve and Ginger and the new pigs, Bumper, Brownie, and Cuddles, with Niles and Butterscotch and Clover and poor, dear Mr. Mike in our hearts always From joanhess4 at sbcglobal.net Sat Aug 29 14:02:59 2009 From: joanhess4 at sbcglobal.net (GARY HESS) Date: Sat, 29 Aug 2009 11:02:59 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Gpdd] BEHAVIOR: Hiding in back of cage Message-ID: <446277.3661.qm@web81301.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Hershey spends most of her time in the front of her C&C cage, mooching goodies and relaxing. This morning I she was wheeking loudly even after I approached her cage and wouldn't come forward to eat her beloved vitamin C. It took awhile to coax her up to the front, which has never happened ever since I gained her trust over a year ago. She ate it readily with only minor hesitation. I came in later and she was back behind her feeder. When I gave her her hay, she attenpted to eat it from the backside of the feeder. She had another wheeking episode. It sounded as if she were summoning someone from far away. Again, it didn't cease when she saw me, which is really weird. After several tries I lured her to the front with some romaine, and she didn't immediately zip back to her hiding place. I'm afraid that she's avoiding the front of the cage because that's where she normally pees, and that the wheeks are wheeks of pain as she urinates. Does a cry of pain sound like the sound a piggie makes when you catch her? It's definitely not that sound. I don't want to subject her to a visit with an unknown vet unless I have reason to. Hiding in the back of a cage isn't much of a symptom for a vet to work with. Has anyone had something like this happen?? ? It amazes me that any of those piggies are still around. That just goes to show how wonderful of a life he has with you and your hubby. Happy Anniversary, Tumbleweed! Judi L. We are very happy to announce that today is Tumbleweed's adoption day. He has been with us for five years! He was part of the Maryland rescue piggies and came to us along with Sunshine (RIP). Tumbleweed has had some health issues, including an abscess that took months to heal last year, as well as a tooth that needed to be removed. However, he is alert, active, and happy. He even eats faster than I've ever seen him eat. One of his favorite activities is chasing me for food when he has floortime. Tumbleweed's buddy is Friday, who is constantly at his side. When it's time for floortime, I have to put Tumbleweed out first. If I try putting Friday out first, he will get on the floor, look around for his friend, and then wheek at the top of his lungs because Tumbleweed isn't there. We were also lucky that Tumbleweed and Sunshine got along so well. I would set one on the floor, then the other, and they would run up and touch noses. I always thought they were saying something like, "Is that still you, Sunshine?" "Is that still you, Tumbleweed?" Happy 5th Adoption Day, Tumbleweed! The vet was very thorough and caring as she examined her. She found no palpable masses or stones, and Hersh's teeth were fine. The piggie was somewhat dehydrated, however. Our house gets up into the eighties when the outdoor temperature hits the hundreds as it did today, so?dehydration could happen very quickly if she slows her water intake. They did subcutaneous fluids, injections of antibiotics and anti inflamatory/pain killers and sent her home with meds understanding that if she hasn't improved by Monday, we'll have her back in and run some tests. I'm afraid it might be ovarian cysts because for the last month or so she's been flirting with me when I refill her hay container. No other time, mind you. Never had a piggie do that to me before, and all mine have been sows. So far, she's eaten a bit of Critical Care and some wet romaine and a bit of hay. I want to see her drinking, though. She's a bit perkier and hasn't cried out since I packed her off to the vet. Keep your prayers and wishes a' comin' and your paws crossed. More tomorrow. To wheeek as you describe could possible mean pain in urinating or pooping. I would give him a thorough check over, include cleaning out the "slot between his testicles and using oil to clean his penis and being sure its not gotten glued up, make sure you can extrude it all the way. Follow up with a quick bath, see if any unusual stuff floats out of his fur. Dry him quickly. When you examine him try to find any tender spots or unusual bumps or lumps. Dont forget to check his ears and jaw and under his chin, examine his mouth. Examine the pee corner of his cage for blood, are his poops normal? If he keeps it up another day get him to a good exotics vet. Also check him over for mites, comb him to se if any flea or mite dirt comes out, watch him for itching, see if he's better after the bath and underside cleaning, if not it's vet time for sure. So put a second water bottle in and serve all her veggies dripping wet with filtered water. The imbalance creates as it gets worse, a burning thirst which must be honored, dont withhold water. The 2 treatments are hormones or surgery. If she is to have a spay, pick a surgeon who has done many many, at least on buns, and consider asking for 2 weeks of Reglan, which will keep her from getting gassy, the gas distends the abdomen and makes the stitches itch. Use double layer of real stitches (inside and outside, not side by side), not glue or staples or steri strips, I see allot more cases on my bunny group of spay difficulties and we just had one of our list piggies die after a spay. But the condition is common in girl pigs and will shorten her life and make her driven to get water unless treated.
