How wonderful that you have adopted Isabella and Guido; we know they will enjoy their lives with you. Please accept our condolences, though, on the passings of Katonia and Napoleon. We are so sorry that Katonia passed away from pneumonia. Pneumonia can be very difficult to treat in piggies. We're sorry, too, that Napoleon left just a month later, after seeming depressed. Like you, we once had a male and female piggie who did not live together because the male was not neutered. When Buttercup, our female, passed away, our male, Joey, definitely mourned. It sounds like Napoleon wanted to rejoin his friend, and we bet they are now inseparable at the Bridge. Please know that they were so lucky to be beloved members of your family. However, we are very saddened to hear that several Squeakers recently passed to the Bridge in a short period of time. Losing one piggie at a time is hard enough; we can imagine how worried you were each day that somepig else would leave. It is good, though, that all who made their final journey were quite old. That means they had had long and happy lives as special members of your family. We have no doubt that they knew how much you loved them. Please accept our condolences. We are so very sorry for your loss. We hope you will find comfort in your many happy memories of her and in knowing that you gave her a loving home. Yes, we can certainly imagine that Abby is lonely, and we hope you will be able to find a new friend for her. We hope it will work out that you can adopt the piggie from the free-ads website or one from the re-homing place. We once adopted a young rescue piggie, Calliope (RIP), when our first piggie, Rippley (RIP), was about four and a half. Rippley immediately accepted Calliope. In fact, I could never tell that either was the alpha pig. Calliope would follow Rippley around, and vice versa. I wish you the same good luck when you bring home a new pal for Abby. That is if congestion in the heart and lungs have been ruled out. Make sure there is no air fresheners sprayed, pug-in air freshers, or candles burned where your pig can smell them. This is a common cause. Anything that smells can bother them. I had one that was like that. Little pig had been for his routine molar work at the vets on Wednesday (he had a malocclusion), on Thursday he stopped eating , I took him back to the vet that afternoon , vet said there was nothing to worry about, it was just an ulcer caused by the molar work the day before and to give him metacam and syringe feed him for a few days and to bring him back on Monday. I did my treat rounds on Sunday evening and little pig was laying down no looking to well , I picked him up and sat with him , stroking his ear (he always loved that), and at 12.35am he passed very peacefully in my arms, no pain. Little pig was a white pink eyed pig , I say eye as he lost the sight in one eye in his younger days in a skirmish, he was a bit of a rebel in his youth , he mellowed after a while, and although very much his own pig, I could always get half an hours quality time with him by stroking behind his ears. Little pig was pen mate to Katty a brown Abyssinian type sow, they are the only pair we have allowed to breed , and we have 4 adorable babies from them on the 10.04.07, (Baby Pig, Crinkle, Polly, and Mouse.) two boys tow girls . Then we got little pig nutterd. The two things I will remember the most about little pig was his no compromise personality, he was his own pig, if he did=2 0not want to do something , you had your work cut out, and on the other side of him there was a loving peaceful soul who would sit on your lap for hours. And the total bond that he formed with Katty, they where so loving towards each other , they would spend a lot of there day grooming each other , it was a true joy to watch . And for me it?s these times that make it all worth while. Thank you little pig ,I love you, and I miss you so much sweetheart. I just wanted to say hello to everyone and to let you know that I think this digest is wonderful. It makes me cry when i read of a passing? to the bridge of a piggie. We have only lost one piggie so far, and her name was Lavern. She was also a rescue piggie, and she came with a cage mate (shirly)?that we thought was a girl also.? They were our first two piggies. Well come to find out? shirly was a NED , and Lavern was a 2 year old pig that was pg for the first time. We acualy? had a c-section done on her but she only lived for? a week after the surgry.? Her two pups didnt make it either. That was a sad sad time in our lives. We had all become so attached to lavern. We still have NED her cage mate. :) but after that our little clan just kept getting larger by more little furry friends that needed a forever home and they all have come from sad sad stories.... but we love them to pieces.?? and I truely enjoy reading your stories of your piggies too. He sounds like a very special little fellow, with his split personality reminding us all of our Soulage - stubborn and headstrong, but with a soft cuddly side as well! You are so lucky to have the four babies to remember him by, just as we still have Zebra, the son of our dear harem lord Claude, who went to The Bridge almost a year ago. It sounds as though perhaps your vet was not as knowledgeable as he should have been, being unable to diagnose the problem properly when Little Pig stopped eating - as we lack access to a cavy-savvy vet ourselves, we know how frustrating that can be. But we are sure Little Pig knew how very much he was loved, and he will have appreciated the comfort of your loving arms as he prepared to make that final journey. Thankfully he did not appear to be in pain, and we know that now he is in that luscious Rainbow Meadow, in the excellent company of all those masters of gpdd slaves who have gone there before him. We understand how bitterly you will be suffering, but may it bring you some solace to know that all of us here across the ocean in Northwest France are thinking of you and remembering you in our prayers at this very difficult time. I've recently felt ready to offer another couple of piggies a forever home - besides Casa Cavy was looking FAR too spacious and Bert and Scamp kind of 'rattle around' in there on their own! So yesterday we welcomed Donald and Ernest to Casa Cavy. They were adopted from Wood Green Animal Shelter, Godmanchester (England). Donald is a tri-colour Abby and was born without earlobes but is VERY handsome just the same. Ernest is mostly white but has 50/50 face markings of agouti and tan colouring - again, a very good looking little chap! I slightly changed Ernest's name to Ernie - nothing too drastic there. However, I have renamed Donald after a small, albino piggy I had when I was a child, called Chips. Sadly, Chips lead a very lonely life as I wasn't a very good 'slave' at 11 yrs old. As an adult, I have now homed 12 piggies to date and loved and cared about all of them to absolute infinity. The life that little Chips led still haunts me. He died in terrible conditions due to my (un)care which I remain ashamed about even now - 34 years later - but I pray he made it across the Bridge and finally found health, happiness and friendship, bless him. On a MUCH happier note, I would now like to officially welcome Chips and Ernie to Casa Cavy to live a long and very happy life with Bertie, Scampi and me and hope you and your Piggies will also welcome them into the GPDD 'family'. Thanks to you all! With best wishes to you and your Piggies. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <9F4661B6-F919-4EEE-9C7B-A33ADED3DCAF@dunser.com> Hi everyone, I don't know if I mentioned this, but we had a pretty cold (for Auckland) and very wet winter here, so I moved Rocky inside a couple of months ago. He's in a smaller cage, but overall I think it's better for him since he's on his own now (I mean, since Cocoa went to the bridge) - he's in the living room (no protest from Tom yet, knock wood!) and he sees everything going on, we pick him up more, etc. He seems happy. He's gotten a lot more used to being petted and handled, too, which is great. However. He's clicked that the purpose of my existence, especially if I'm near the kitchen (which he can see clearly - he's very central), is to get him more food. I have taken to always having a bag of grass in the refrigerator (doesn't everybody?), so I'm not giving him fruit or anything more calorific, but I find it very hard to resist the commanding wheeks he delivers, sitting on top of his house and staring at me! He's still just short of LAPS, but for how long? Can one overfeed a piggie on grass? He has pellets in his bowl, but doesn't like them as much, and also always has hay and water, not to mention the odd piece of cardboard, so it's not that he's starving. So... is this okay? Do any of you actually ignore the master's calls? After about 10 at night I do tell him to go to bed, but before that I have to admit I'm sort of spoiling him rotten. Please advise! I am now pleased to introduce 2 new piggies to the group - Marmite and Jessica. I found them in the free ads, the lady had 6 females and 5 males to re-home as she had got 2 new puppies and could no longer give them the attention they needed. 4 of them were re-homed elsewhere so I couldn't take 1 without the other. Marmite and Jessica are lovely friendly guinea pigs who seem quite laid back upon first inspection. They are still settling in though and are quite frightened by their new surroundings but I suppose it's quite an ordeal being taken away from a large group of your friends then moving house! I'm sure they will settle down. When they are a bit more comfortable I shall start introducing them to Abby. Hopefully they will all get on - I know Abby is dying to meet some other pigs again. I am looking at getting a new cage/hutch/enclosure for them all to live together comfortably although I really want to make sure they all get along because in the worst case scenario, they will have to live apart. They only had two male skinny pigs who were quietly doing there guinea pig things.(Which originally I didn't like and now I feel I should be knitting them sweaters. They grow on you.) We walked off several rows away. All of the sudden I hear guinea pigs wheeking. I perk up. I said I hear guinea pigs. I have this urge to go to the fridge or run to the cage. It must be like a mother hearing a child calling mum. and they all turn to look. All I could think was a guinea pig needs me. My friend said that it was probably a bird squawking. But I had to rush to the guinea pigs. Sure enough, they just placed a whole bunch of baby pigs in the cage. At first they were squeaking but soon they started popcorning and were happy. No I didn't buy a guinea pig although I was tempted. But I realized I am really happy when guinea pigs call my name. Which is apparently Wheek. My name is Evelyn and I am a guinea pig slave. Normally I only ever post when I have eulogies to post and today is no exception. I am not having the best of years - having already lost my Dad, and 2 guineas shortly afterwards. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all you of you who wrote to me. I was very touched. Today, I am writing to remember Archie and Persephone who both passed away last week, within 3 days of each other! I only had Archie for a year - he was a rescue pig, and a very fine fellow. At the beginning of July, I noticed he wasn't eating and realised his incisors had become maloccluded, so trimmed them. I then syringe fed him for a couple of weeks (even taking him to T in the Park (a music festival) with me - I hasten to add I stayed in a friend's house and not a tent!). His teeth grew back, again maloccluded, and again I trimmed them and went back to the syringe feeding. On Saturday, he ate for Scotland but on Sunday, he stopped being able to eat - all the food was dribbling out of his mouth. I was due to spend a week with Vedra at the CCT (I am a Rodent Health Advisor), so thought she would be able to sort him out, but he went downhill very quickly. My vet tried to help, but he passed away there. Archie was a tri-coloured ridgeback - he came with me to the CCT last year when I did my residential course, and did not like it one little bit. Indeed, Vedra said she had never seen a piggy react so badly!!!! However, he recovered and when we came back, he moved in with my 4 girls, and lived the life of Reilly. He was never backward at coming forward and was just a lovely character. Persephone (a golden agouti) was also a rescue pig - I had been looking for an older sow but couldn't find one. I asked at my local Pets Corner who said that they often received calls from people asking if they could leave their animals there!! So I left my number. A couple of weeks later, I received a phone call from a girl whose friend had an 8 month old sow. This girl did not like the way her friend was looking after the pig, so had decided to rehome her. When I saw her, she was exactly what I didn't want - however, she was being kept in a filthy, wicker cat basket, with no room to exercise, no proper food or water and, she was called Jesus! What could I do??? To start with, Persephone wasn't a very nice pig at all - she bullied my other pigs, and was really nipply and unfriendly. I must confess, I didn't like her very much and often thought I'd made a mistake, but, still, I would never have got rid of her. As she grew older, she matured into a beautiful natured girl, she was really gentle, and sweet and loved cuddles and grapes. After Archie died on Wednesday, she stopped eating and went downhill very quickly and, despite my vet and Vedra's best efforts, she died on Friday night. In some ways, it was a relief as Vedra had advised me to take her with me to Cambridge - which is about an 8 hour drive - and I wasn't looking forward to that when she was so ill. Unlike Archie, she reached a grand 5 and a half, which makes her the piggy I have managed to keep the longest. Today was my first day back at home after being at the CCT, and the house is far too quiet - although I still have 3 gorgeous guineas left, 2 of the main characters have left, and life is a lot less fun without the pair of them around. I have buried them together in the back garden. Goodnight, Archie and Persephone - thank you for everything, I hope you are both happy over the bridge, both me and your Dad will miss you heaps! Sorry it's so long, and thanks for listening! I spent ages cuddling them on the sofa but couldn't make Jesscia move at all - she was playing statues I think. Marmite was won round with cucumber and was putty in my hand after a while. After days of cuddles and offerings of cucumber I wasn't making any head way with Jessica. Tonight I brought out my old piggie Abby for her usual run around in the conservatory and she was running around making contented wheeks. I had Jessica and Marmite out on the sofa in there with more offerings of food and as soon as they heard Abby wheeking away they both sprung into life! In fact Jessica was almost ripping the cucumber out of Marmite's mouth. It's funny how their little personalities come out when they are comfortable. I feel like I've made progress with them and they seem to be quite happy knowing Abby is around so I doubt it will be long before I attempt to introduce them all. I'm sure Abby will keep them both in check and show them what's what around here! The lady I adopted the girls from has 6 boys still looking for homes. His x rays showed scarring and a lot of fluid grrrrrrrrrrrr One more thing i did ask if he was in pain, they said they didn't think so. So we do drugs twice a day, metacam twice a day, his probiotics once a day, every feed (now up to 5 CC feeds a day - 2am, 7.30am, noon, 4pm, 8.30pm) he gets water with vitamin C added, and of course i try to hand feed his veggies. He's refusing his corn, cauli, apple and canteloupe, but last night i got a tiny bit of cucumber into him. He'll happily let me feed him parsley, spinach leaves, cos lettuce and any other green leafy i can find... tho at times it goes in gets nice and soggy and then he manages to spit it out. If anyone has anymore ideas about keeping him comfortable i'd so appreciate you telling me. How terrible it must have been to have lost two piggies in such close succession. Persephone was a Senior Citizen Ageing Miracle Pig (SCAMP), which is a huge credit to you, given the dreadful conditions from which you rescued her, and she was obviously only a nasty pig when you first got her because she had never known proper care and love. You kindness and patience turned her around, and she sounds like a wonderful character. Do you think she died of a broken heart after losing Archie, or was it just a coincidence that she went to the Bridge so soon after he did? Archie sounds like a right little character! He was very privileged to have been to the CCT and met Vedra, even if he was not impressed by it, and probably the skills you learnt there contributed to the prolongation of his life when the dental problems began to occur. Well, he was sleeping in his litter box (not his cosy or bed) and his eyes were open.? When I spoke to him, I got no response and panicked, thinking the worse.? I touched him and he jumped up and gave me a look, like "why did you wake me up?".? I have since realized that he is just a very sound sleeper, who sleeps with his eyes open, and nothing wakes him up if he is not ready.? He has a little overstuffed chair that is his favorite place to sleep, and he stretches out in it, goes to sleep (usually with his eyes open) and absolutely nothing seems to disturb him.? We cannot believe that Mimi has been with this group for a whole year! Where does the time go? I have had similar experiences to Audrey regarding Gordon's sound sleeping. I have approached piggies with dread, thinking that they have passed on, only to have them look up at me after the second prod as though they are annoyed to have been woken. Frodo is one such piggy and when he was staying with our Rodentologist having an abscess treated, he gave her a shock too when she thought that he was more than asleep. Such a wave of relief ( and tears of joy too ) when you realise that you have been fooled! Hugs to all piggies, Penny and the Piggyfriends. Yvonne and I want to thank you guy?s for all your kind words and emails when we lost our precious Little Pig, they really helped in our time of sorrow. It was a bolt out of the blue , only 8 hours before he died , we were reflecting on how lucky we had been, Toby had received the all clear from nipple lump biopsy , Elvis is recovering from tummy upset, (he needed his molars filing ), and we had been told by our vet that Little Pig just had a minor ulcer in his mouth after having his molars filed, we felt so blessed , then it all came crashing down . It may seam like we have a lot of medical problems with our pigs, but this is due to the fact that hear at PP we provide ?forever homes? for up to 20 piggy?s , most of them are x breeders and unwanted pigs, a lot of them are old timers and inevitably the older the piggy gets the moor prone they are to problems , though we do have our Furby , a lovely 7 year old teddy boar , that apart from mites, has never had a days illness . At the moment we are blessed with 18 masters, and we have not had a death in 17 months, so as I was saying , Little Pigs crossing really hit us hard . But we had to be realistic , Katty , Little Pig?s pen mate was the main loser , they where an incredibly closely bonded pair, and she was confused , and needed a d istraction , so that she wouldn?t pine , we have had pigs in the past that have died a short time after losing a long term pen mate, and we were no about to have this happen to Katty. Not wanting to split up any of our established family groups ,we went to the rescue and adopted a 2 year old x breeder sow , and by chance and not choice, this sow was a Little Pig look alike , and apart from being a lot bigger and a sharper white, and bigger ears, and of course a sow, well nearly look alike!! We called her Windy Wendy , as the first thing she did when she was put into my arms was pump, I don?t know what she would have been called if she had wee?ed . Anyway it was hate at first sight , they where aggressive towards each other , we tried different approaches , none seamed to do any good, they were both determined to be boss sow . So I emailed Manny the Boar?s Mum, and she gave me some good advice , I won?t go into detail , it took nearly 5 days , but Sandy?s advice did the trick. We now have Katty and Wendy happily housed to together . Piggy love certainly has it?s share of worry and pain, but the pure joy these precious little souls bring us all makes it more than worth while . Once again, thanks so much you guys, for being there when we really needed it. Sooooo, Judi met me at Mary's (B-Bear & B'scotch's piggie-sitter in Virginia). That way, I didn't have to drive as far. How nice. So, PS & I stayed with Mary on Saturday night and Judi brought the new piggie (Bertrand) on Sunday to meet the Princess. Bertrand is a neutered boy, he is approximately 2 years/ 3 months old. He's a big boy and I think he might be LAPS material, but I won't know until I weigh him. He is tan/white/ brown and has the sweeetest, little face. I think he is mostly an Abby, but I see some evidence of the Agouti breed too, so he's a mix of something. He's really interesting-looking and he has kind of a Bohawk (a Mohawk located on his back). I must say, he's absolutely Gorgeous! His official name is Bertrand, but whee will call him Bertie for short. He came to MGPR from a shelter in West Virginia that was not equiped for piggies and he was almost put down...Yikes! But, Thank God! MGPR saved him and Judi (Lainer) was his foster Mommy Slave. Yesterday, when Bertie and PS met, they were totally fine with each other and there was no fighting...Whew! I was so scared they were gonna fight, anticipating the worst. But, everything went swell. It took me 5 hours/10 min to get back to Charlotte, NC and after about an hour, they slept most of the way (in the same carrier) so that was good. When whee got home, I set up their new palace. I was careful not to let the Princess see their new cage and accessories. I'm keeping them in a 5x2 C&C cage and they Love it! I had to go to a mix of shredded paper and CareFresh for their bedding, for obvious reasons ($$$). And I bought new pigloos, and water bottles. And I'm using a bigger food dish. I wanted everything to be new so that PS would hopefully be less territorial. And guess what?!? It Worked!!! They are living together as of last night and boy! am I relieved. I wanted everything to be new so that PS would hopefully be less territorial. And guess what?!? It Worked!!! They are living together as of last night and boy! am I relieved. I didn't want to keep them separate cuz that is so much work, ya know. So, anyways, I just wanted to introduce Bertie to everyone and WELCOME my new boy to the Digest!!! I am Sooooooo Happy and Excited and I can't wait to start working on his first website...Wheeeeek! ? ? ? Love 'n Wheeeeeeeeeeeps, ? ? ? ? ? ?Leah...Slave to Princess Snowflake & Bertie :-) P.S. PS wanted to let her Hubby, Prince Teddy know that she Loves him and that her Heart will Always be with him... and that Bertie is her 'Best Friend' and that he totally understands that she is married. ;-) From calliope at geeksnet.com Mon Sep 15 22:00:32 2008 From: calliope at geeksnet.com (Cindy) Date: Mon, 15 Sep 2008 22:00:32 -0400 Subject: [Gpdd] ANNOUNCEMENT: adoption day, Kaylee Message-ID: <48CF1340.9050107@geeksnet.com> We would like to wish Kaylee a very Happy 1st Adoption Day! Abby is very content at the moment going about her daily business. She even has a few new friends in the form of local cats! I have come home to find them sitting by her cage looking fascinated as Abby chomps up the lawn. Abby doesn't even care less about them and even had a go at me when I chased them away :( The cats cannot get to her as the cage is very secure and I've even added an extra layer of wire so that other small animals cannot get to her (at my last house I had problems with mice sharing her cage!). I had her out last night on the sofa with Marmite & Jessica's cage there too. As soon as Abby started squeaking they burst into life and started eating. Abby was a bit miffed because she couldn't get in to see them. I think they are ready for their meeting tonight. From what I have seen I think they are going to get on really well. Fingers crossed! Phoebe was a very sound sleeper, even when she was a baby. She also slept with her eyes closed, which most guinea pigs don't. I used to look for breathing. She was always pissed off when work her or at least expecting treats. Most guinea pigs do become sound sleepers when they get older. Some snore. Wilbur used to sound like an owl. I would hear hoo hoo. It took me a while to figure out it was her. Of course the reverse can be true too. I came home one day and Emily looked fast asleep by her food bowl. She was a senior pig and had just made a miraculous recover the week before. When I went to check on her because she would get up, I realized she was gone. But I know she went peacefully after having a snack. So it's still good to check on them. I have been a member of the CCT for 10 years. I also own Vedra's book and her hand made dental instruments to keep the mouth open and the buccal pads separated along with rodent dental ronguers and a dental rasp. Yesterday I spoke with Vedra about elongated roots. My interest is in how common this condition occurs and if there is a genetic predisposition to it. Vedra has seen approximately 100 cases of elongated roots in over 30 years of practice. She feels that there may be a genetic component to this condition. I know of only 2 cases that have been reported in Canadian and American Veterinary Journals.I am interested in hearing other people's stories about cases of elongated roots and especially if they have seen it in certain breeds or related individuals. Vedra explained to me how to feel for it as bumps along the lower jaws and other signs of the condition include bulging eyes or eyes that are always tearing. My interest is purely academic. I have never seen a case of elongated roots in the 24 years that I have been operating a private cavy rescue home. I have examined hundreds of cavies teeth both the incisors and the molars. Thank you once again for responding to my question. Ann and the Rescued Cavies of Piggyville Tampa Florida. And once he has put back that 200 g , he will be better equipped to deal with his other problems. Now that's a true record for her to want to be held and cuddled with out needing to go potty for that long. I thought something is up for sure. Her little tummy was wiggling like crazy, and I kept thinking.. "I bet there is more than three babies in there poor little girl" Well at 3 am this morning something woke me up.. I went in to where Amelia's cage is and she was walking around her cage making strange little squeaky noises looking all nervous. I pet her and told her how much I loved her and how beautiful she was, and what a great momma she will make, just trying to calm her down. Well as I talked to her, she reached down below and tugged a bit and proceeded to pull out a little white and black baby:)? It was the most amazing thing to witness.? Then she cleaned that baby off and in less than 10 mins she pulled again and out came a multi-colored brown, black and white baby.? She then worked on cleaning that baby off.? I? do think it was little Amelia's guardian angle that woke me up.? I was truly blessed to be able to witness the births.? They are all doing well. It amazes me how those little babies can become so active in such a short time indeed. We are hoping that the babies are girls so they can stay with their mommie. We don't have names yet.. but as soon as they whisper their names to us I will let you all know. A few months ago, our computer burned out so we had no computer for a couple months or so. THEN, someone gave us a six year old laptop a few months ago, and that went black a month or so ago! It was just the screen so we finally got a new monitor but we had no internet service (the installation company only had reservations three weeks in advance!). So this whole time, we had no phone, no internet, no tv services!!!! Glad to say that we seem a bit more set for now. So having said all that, my most humblest of apologies to everyone who wrote to me in regards to my beloved Peppermint. I have not been ignoring you, I have been unable to contact anyone for the past month or so. I still look for her, I occasionally 'hear' her, and she's in my dreams. I have been crying for her, I miss her more than words can say. I would gladly give my life to hold her one more time. Michael has been supportive as I've been surrounding myself with 'deep pink' items as I find them, as they remind me of Peppermint's beautiful deep pink eyes. My heart is so empty I keep thinking I'll see her somewhere and keep wondering where she is. The vet who did the quick necropsy said that her opinion is that the lump which was under her skin but not attached to anything was cancer and that it had spread to her liver as her liver had small growths on it. To start with everything was fine on the first night, just a bit of sniffing. Abby took to Jessica straight away licking her ears. I had some food so they all starting munching away but it all kicked off when Marmite stole a piece of cucumber out of Abby's mouth. Abby didn't take to kindly to this and starting teeth chattering which in turn started Marmite off. Marmite then chased Abby all of the place nipping her. It wasn't going anywhere so we split them up. The next night I put them on the floor together again with food and hay but this time it kicked off straight away with Marmite chasing Abby again. I ended up splitting them up by keeping Marmite in a cage on the floor and Abby loose. They were trying to get to each other but as far as I could see Abby was backing down when Marmite got aggressive. After a while the teeth chattering stopped and they were all calm. I let them loose again and Marmite went straight for Abby giving her little nips. There is no blood being drawn or any serious biting. Maybe I need to be more confident and let them fight it out a bit longer but I get scared they are going to hurt each other. If they can't sort it out I may have to try the old bathing trick I keep reading about. I did tell them that once they get on with each other, they get a brand new spacious cage but they look at me blankly! The babies were too active in her belly to stay in much longer. I got up at 3:30 am and she had already had 3 little wet baby boys in the cage. I wanted females so I could leave them with mom too. But I'd like to start back up again. My guinea pigs Cocoa and Mocha are doing well. My mom just got a male guinea pig named Yuuki and I'm trying to help her assimilate to a life with a guinea pig. But I don't have any experience with male guinea pigs. Are there benefits to getting him neutered even if my mom doesn't plan to get another guinea pig? Will it affect his temperament or will it not make any difference? Also, my mom wanted to train him to be a free-range pig. I was wondering if people have experience with this and what's the best way to do that etc. Thank you for your time, Sasha (surrogate piggie slave to Yuuki) From MFug at live.co.uk Sat Sep 20 12:33:26 2008 From: MFug at live.co.uk (M) Date: Sat, 20 Sep 2008 17:33:26 +0100 Subject: [Gpdd] announcement; Piglets Message-ID: Jean and Andy, congratulations on your new grandchildren, how wonderful to see them born. My local RSPCA will not let you adopt piggys unless they live in an outdoor hutch and have access to a secure run for grazing all day every day, which given our climate I think is a bit mad. I know of another rescue that will not let you adopt if you use woodshavings for bedding, and yet another rescue that has been using woodshavings for 40 years with no problem. So I am really interested in what the different policies around the world are, and of course more input from a UK point of view would be great. It will make not the slightest difference to his temperament and will save him from the pain and danger of an unnecessary operation. I never have my boars neutered and have several pairs happily living together, even though I have pens of sows nearby. As you are new to boars, have a look at this website, specifically written about them. The spelling and grammar is appalling but the information is first class. There is a special "Boar Health" section too. http://www.susieandpigs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/home.htm Having my piggies free range is not practical when I have so many but have a look at this, which could give you both some ideas. http://www.guineapigcages.com/freerange.htm Regards from Penny and the Piggyfriends. Any serious piggy keeper knows that these fragile little animals do not fare well in temperatures below 50 degrees F , and below 40 in the they are suffering, and miserable, and the UK weather is to changeable , especially in winter. Warm one day freezing the next. ( quote from guinea lynx, and the same is said in every book I have ever read.) room with a stable temperature range between 65 and 75 degrees F (18 to 24 degrees C), out of direct sunlight, situated close to household activities. The more your guinea pigs are part of your daily lives, the happier you will both be. Do not house your cavies outside: Temperature fluctuations can be very hard on your guinea pigs. Predators sometimes break into cages. A guinea pig inside will receive better care as you will catch health problems more quickly. ) end quote . As for the rescues, I would not trust a rescue that did not vet me before handing over a pig, in fact there is one rescue we visit that insists you Signe a form declaring that the animal is only on loan and can be taken back at any time. We have a duty of care to all animals, and=2 0the rescues you speak of are only thinking of the welfare of the animals in there trust , it is not in there best interest to make it unreasonably difficult , as they would never be able to re home, but they must , as true animal lovers, put the adoptee?s needs first. These little guys have in most cases had a hard life before reaching the rescue , come on , this is there only chance for a happy and comfortable piggy life. Dave of Dave & Yvonne of Piggy Palace UK. PS ; I was just looking through some of the U S rescue sights , and on most of them you need a letter from god to adopt a piggy, good for them, its like every thing in life , the harder it is to get the more you look after it. ________________________________________________________________________ AOL Email goes Mobile! Snuggles was a little soul that that we adopted from Irene at the rescue, she said he was hard to re home as he had an aggressive nature . He was just a frightened young boar that just needed some T.L.C. He had just started to settle down , and we were just getting use to his ways , he desperately needed the company of other pigs. He used to run around the living room, then perch himself against a cage housing two sows, and he would spend the rest of his time looking longingly at the two sows. I took him for a pe opp cheque up yesterday , and the vet said he was fine to be netted so I took him in this morning , for the opp. It was not the vets fault he died it was mine, I gave the nurse a piece of cucumber to give to Snuggles to help him rehidrate after the opp . The vet just phoned to say that he had given him the cucumber , and soon after he regurgitated it and choked to death . Snuggles was far to young to die , his little life hadn?t even started . I feel that I will never forgive my self, if only I had not given the nurse the piece of cucumber. God rest little Snuggles , I am so so sorry. Thank you for reading this ,I was so shocked , and I had to write a tribute to his sh ort little life. Mom and babies are doing wonderful indeed. We are so proud of them all. Well just wanted to let you know.. we have their names now. The first born that is all black except for two beautiful full rings of white around the neck and shoulders and the other full ring is around the rump and back legs we decided just had to be called "Ringer"? and the other beautiful baby that is multicolor of black, white, and dark brown? just had to be named "Trigger" as he looks just? like a horse that was named Trigger with a white mane ?that goes from the tip of the nose all the way up past his ears and down his neck that looks like a horse's mane.? I must admit the one we called Ringer has two names? in my mind? because... as at first I thought he looked like a "Alvin" but majority wins.. and my husband, daugther, and son-law all thought "Ringer" fit him best. they are two boys... We were hoping for two girls.. so they could stay with mom. Has anyone had two brothers stay together and it worked out that they didn't fight? there would be no girls in their cage, but there are girls in the same room in their own cages. Would the smell of the girls set them into a tizzy being in the same cage? and make them fight when they are older?? They seem to get along so well and they are so darn cute together that I would love to be able to keep them together for the ease of it and for company for each other. Let me know how anyone else that has dealt with this worked out for them. Thank you again everyone for? all the great welcomes! You are are the best-est!? I can't believe anyone at the vet would give an animal right out of anesthesia ANYTHING TO EAT!!! It is not your fault!! Its their fault! I've been working with vets for so long now and they never ever give an animal anything to eat because of exactly this reason. Their system is still asleep and they can't begin to understand what is happening to them if you try to give them food. You are heartbroken, I know, but it is NOT your fault. I always keep litter brothers together. I currently have Cadbury living with his litter brother Bramley. Barley lives with his son, Rye and other boars are paired up with a friend. My house is full of piggy pens and the pairs of boys are right next to pens of sows but there is never any fighting. I have found that pair of boars bond together so well that although they often chat to the girls, there is no aggression. Past Piggyfriend boar brothers include Rolo and Raffles, who shared a pen for nearly seven years without the slightest hint of a fight, despite their pen being right between two groups of sows. Years ago I had 8 baby boars from a group of 4 "sows", whom I was asked to rehome only one of these "sows" was a boar and we had a population explosion. All the boars were paired up without any trouble. Give Ringer and Trigger a try. Hugs for Amelia and the babes. Penny and the Piggyfriends. It really is not your fault. Guinea pigs need to eat and drink as soon as possible after surgery. Maybe they gave the cucumber too soon after surgery. Maybe he was still groggy, or the anesthesia was making him sick. I always throw up after surgery, but I have read that guinea pigs cannot throw up. They could have given him a little too much anesthesia for a small guinea pig too. Anyway, he was in their care and they should have been watching him closely especially if he was eating for the first time after surgery. I still say it was not your fault. You were thinking of his well-being by leaving some food and his happiness from living with the sows. What a terrible shock for you. You must not blame yourself for this. When any of us have to leave a pet at the vets, it is reasonable to hope that they will take the very best care of our little ones and, if you have been told the truth of the matter, it was extremely negligent of the practice to have allowed this to happen. Any animal just out of anaesthesia needs to be very closely monitored. I have a very low opinion of UK vets when it comes to caring for our guinea pigs ( although I know that there are exceptions ) and have heard some horrendous tales of their incompetence when at my Rodentologists, when everyone taking in a piggy patient has a horrible vet story to tell. Hopefully you will be convinced by now that in no way can you blame yourself for Snuggle's death. You were utterly correct in wanting him to eat as soon as he came round, and it sounds as though it was the vet's mistake in not realising he was not fully awake when he presented the cucumber. Or, indeed, there may have been some other complication completely unconnected with the cucumber which caused the gagging and demise. We suffer terribly here from the lack of adequate vet care, although from what Penny says it is not all that much better in parts of the UK. We had Claude castrated at the Cambridge Cavies Trust, and have, in the past, taken a very sick piggie all the way from here in France to Penny's rodentologists at Cavies Castle, but sadly these are not an option for every pig, both because of the cost and because of the stress such a long journey would entail. You did your utmost for Snuggles, and we are quite sure he realised how very much he was loved. He will have lots of friends at the Rainbow Bridge, but we know there will always be sorrow in your hearts when you think of him. Hopefully the words of comfort you have received from all over the globe will go some way to easing the pain. You may remember I did mention it some weeks back in relation to LAPS, as I feel Scrabble's weight contributed to his foot problems. I don't know if his weight made him less mobile, or his lack of mobility made him fat, and I am well aware that there is a strong possibility that he has heart problems as well, which will have made him less mobile. I am also very well aware that this is a disease primarily associated with negligence, poor housing/bedding/care, so feel terribly responsible, although I have always tried to give him optimal care, as all the other Dolly Mixtures. The feet first became a worry to me soon after his cagemate, Fidget, died, I think back in February/March. I rang Cavies Castle, Penny's rodentologists, who suggested Intrafungal, but that has done nothing. I took him to the local vet, who prescribed Marbocyl (a drug from the Baytril family), but a month on that had had no effect. I started giving him 0.5ml liquid Vitamin C as soon as I identified the problem, and still do. I also put him on Vetbed or thick acrylic blankets instead of hay, which I change morning and evening. He is sharing with Zebra now, and they are good friends, I have seen Zebra licking Scrabble's eyes. Scrabble also has anal impaction problems, which I deal with as required. A new French piggie website, a kind of spin-off from Guinealynx, recommended I bathe the feet in chlorohexine then apply Preparation H, so I have been faithfully doing that for about a month. But the feet are just getting worse and worse. Initially they were just very swollen, but gradually they have developed open sores, which are growing in size daily. I am currently bathing in warm salt water and applying Preparation H afterwards, but to no avail. I am seeing the vet with him tomorrow - a different vet this time, my usual one,who was on holiday last time I went. She is not piggie-savvy, as you know, but is more willing to try things I suggest that I have seen on the Net or wherever. The locum vet seemed to want me to believe he knew what he was doing. Scrabble can hardly walk now. He does get around, but it is by walking on the sides of his feet rather than the actual pads, and in fact it is these sides, rather than his pads, that have the open sores. These sores are not scabbed over, they are just raw skin. I don't think there is pus. He is, amazingly, still eating well, and really enjoying the Indian summer we are having here in France, stumbling out of his hutch to a sunny spot and sunbathing there most of the day. He takes his treaments very well, but must wonder why I am doing all this to him yet not curing his poor feet. I know Peter Gurney said he'd never had a piggie die from this condition, and the rodentologists said the only way he could die from it would be if he bled to death. There doesn't seem to be a lot of bleeding at present, although the evening I noticed it was when I removed a bit of hay caught up in his foot and somehow ripped it open and it bled profusely. That was back in April, and there were no open sores then, and little swelling. It has been gradually getting worse since then. Of course, I have read how the condition can spread to kidneys, spleen, liver and other organs and cause a painful death, which I dread happening. I think I can honestly say that the sores are very clean now, with all the soaking and bedding changes. But they are not in any way healing. I don't suppose many people here have experienced this with their own, very well cared for piggies, but you may have come across it in rescued piggies. I would be REALLY grateful to hear of any successful treatments slaves have used, and any additional management strategies. I have read about injecting antibiotics straight into the sores, but as my vet is really not piggie savvy at all, I am loathe to suggest it to her. But are there any ointments people have successfully used? Would covering the sores improve the situation, and if so, what's the best way to cover them? If you can give me generic names for any treatments, so much the better, as trade names are different here in France. I feel terribly guilty and inadequate, and would be grateful for any advice. Doesn't sting nearly as much as alcohol and I think has better results. If it only bled little bit, your piggy is lucky! It was after I had injured a piggy toe that I began covering the litter in their cages with some kind of cloth. I now use baby receiving blankets -- they work great. The idea though was to keep the bedding from irritating the foot. I'm sure all is well with you and your piggy by now. I'm almost phobic about cutting my piggies toenails and some nights do only one foot per night. Alge and Company ************** Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? I wouldn't use alcohol as it hurts. Ii would wrap it in gauze or make a little gauze pad and press it firmly for as long as the piggie will let you get away with it, this should staunch the flow, and the flow cleans the wound, as their blood clots up pretty quickly. If it keeps bleeding I would hold an ice cube to it, cold helps bleeding stop. I would squirt a bit of Betadyne on it after the bleeding stops. As for a bandage nothing with plastic or cotton, just a bit of gauze as they will chew it off and nothing too tight as you might stop the circulation. I would very gently clean the wound a couple times a day with the Betadyne, but don't disturb the scab. If its on the bottom of the foot, less often if its on the top, keep the cage spotlessly clean till its healed, Maybe let him rest on clean towels If it doesn't heal right up or if it swells off to vet And then I would quit clipping calluses there is no need whatsoever, They build up to protect that spot on the foot, after all they cant wear shoes, and if it is so bad you feel it has to be clipped then go to a Vet Sandy and Manny the Boar From gapeachge at yahoo.com Mon Sep 29 10:00:47 2008 From: gapeachge at yahoo.com (Glenda English) Date: Mon, 29 Sep 2008 07:00:47 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Gpdd] Rainbow Bridge: Callie's gone Message-ID: <113983.38633.qm@web58004.mail.re3.yahoo.com> Morning all, Our precious Callie passed over the rainbow bridge yesterday morning. She was just shy of being 4 years, 5 months old. She'd gotten kind of frail and had not been eating good last week. On Friday, I told my daugher, who's had Callie since she was 3 months old, that I didn't think she'd be with us much longer. The other piggie, Cookie, had been standing watch over Callie for several days. Cookie is 7.5 months. Callie held out until my daughter was home yesterday. She appeared to have a stroke shortly after she got on the floor, running around a little wildly, and Meg picked her up and held her. Callie curled up in her arms and stopped breathing not even a minute later. We had a tearful funeral and we're just both weepy and sad and heart broken. She was such a sweet little piggie. Cookie has been looking everywhere for her and didn't like being in the cage by herself last night. We'll get her a new cage mate soon. I don't want her to be alone for too long. I'm at work and Meg's at school, but we're just going through the motions today. It'll be a hard, sad week. I had a gpig named Ethel with it. Her cage was always reasonably clean and she was not overweight. She developed it when she was about 5 so I think age may be a factor. I did all of the recommended treatment and it held the disease in check but it never went away totally. (Eventually she passed away from an unrelated tumor.) It didn't seem to bother her much. She stayed active and I think she even looked forward to the foot soaks because she enjoyed being wrapped in a warm towel and cuddled afterwards. Hang in there with it - it's a stubborn problem. Her name was Snowflake and she arrived in a terrible condition. Both her front legs were terribly swollen with the infection that had spread up from her little feet. A long course of Marbocyl antibiotic, which you are using, reduced the infection and her legs began to look better again but I could never get rid of the Bumblefoot. She was only with us for a year as she also had respiratory problems but she was such a cheerful little soul. The Bumblefoot itself never seemed to bother her. I kept her on nice soft bedding and gave her all the best veggies. I think that it was Kay who suggested keeping such piggies on bubble wrap covered with towels so that the piggies cannot chew the plastic, which would be dangerous. I believe that she said that the bubbly side should be underneath. I know that I kept her post at the time but can I find it??? Of course not. My Richardson's book suggests cleaning with an antiseptic solution and applying a " topical antibiotic/corticosteroid cream" to the affected area. She also reports a successful treatment with antibiotics injected directly into the foot pad. I see that this is explained on GuineaLynx's pododermatitis page. http://www.guinealynx.info/pododermatitis.html She further says that similar symptoms are seen as a consequence of a fungal infection and suggests treating with a "suitable fungicide e.g. enilconazole. Alternatively the foot can be treated with cream containing the anti-fungal agents tolnaftate and nystatin (Tinaderm M ) twice daily." This is probably similar to the Intrafungal treatment suggested by Chris at Cavies' Castle. Sending our love and healing wheeks to Scrabble, Penny and the Piggyfriends. I do not know of a product that would help with detangling your Peruvian's hair but when longhaired piggies have arrived here in need of a detangle, I have cut off the offending mats, neatened up the surrounding hair and started again. It soon regrows. This would not be much help for a show pig but for pet piggies it is not a problem. If the mats are not too bad you might be able to cut, very carefully, through the centre of the mat and gently tease the hair apart. It depends on how co-operative your piggy is. It is easier to remove mats when the coat is wet, so I shampoo a tangled piggy and ease out the mats in the bath. I find it easier to cut hopeless mats out of the coat when they are wet. Also the piggy cannot run away when he/she is confined to the bath. Good luck with your Marilyn. Penny and the Piggyfriends. My sister's guinea pig Angus had the exact same problem. His foot just kept getting fatter & fatter, and one night it bled profusely, to the point we thought he might bleed to death. The vet told us to stem the flow of blood with pressure, and that did work. Then my sister decided to take him into the vet. They said there was a very large lump in the foot, putting pressure inwards, and as it was giving him problems with walking and he was not moving around a lot and getting fatter & fatter (he was 1600grams), therefore it should come off. The vet ended up taking the whole of the bottom pad off the foot and things seemed to be hunky dory. Then.......... my sister noticed the thing was growing back and was causing Angus pain, so she took him back to the vet. They inspected him under anaesthetic, to discover a very large tumour growing in the foot. They removed that, stitched it up, and we collected him that afternoon. We were told he would be groggy from the anaesthetic for a couple of days and to treat him as normal. (Of course, that was wrong advice and bad communication). Angus ended up dying as a result of the operation. The vet had omitted to tell us that with a small animal such as piggies, when they go under anaesthetic, they can very quickly become hypothermic and should be kept very warm!!!!! When we finally rang the vet after-hours to advise Angus just didn't seem to be "right", and the vet said to get him into a heat pad, keep stimulating his system by rubbing and rolling him around, but by 1am he was dead because he obviously was suffering from hypothermia. The moral of the story is we don't know what the outcome would have been, had we been given correct information on his after-care. It is possible that the cancer could have spread within his body, he appeared to be a sick piggy when we took him to the vet, so he probably had reduced chances of survival from an operation because of that. But, I unfortunately don't have any treatment advice as a result of our experience with Angus. However, my sister's other piggy, Hamish, has had mammary tumours removed by another vet who is expert in piggy care (the tumours are malignant so we don't know how long we will have him), but after the surgery naughty Hamish pulled his stitches out, which left a big gaping wound in his tummy. My sister was given instructions by this vet to bathe in a solution of salt water, to which my sister added a couple of tinsie drops of tea tree oil (that's an Australian product, but I think it is available worldwide). Then, we made sure to put petroleum jelly (vaseline) on the wound area to keep it supple. She bathed him twice a day, and hey presto, the wound healed beautifully! Perhaps it might be worth trying this fairly easy method with your baby's foot? I sometimes think we try to look for complex ways to cure problems, when the old fashioned methods can do a good job. Tea tree oil is an antiseptic, antibiotic type solution, I've used it on myself with great outcomes. If you have trouble obtaining tea tree oil in France, and if I'm allowed to under quarantine laws of France, I would be happy to send a very small vial of the tea tree oil to you in France. I would wrap it very carefully so it arrives unbroken. Just email me directly Debbie, if you need me to do this. I wish you the best of luck with your dearest Scamp - it doesn't matter if you have 1 or 30 piggies, they are all important members of one's family aren't they? They are very precious creatures indeed. It sounded like she had a peaceful passing, in the arms of your lovely daughter, and that must have been a great comfort to her. Life without her will seem strange, lonely and sad for you, her beloved human slaves, as well as for Cookie, her furry mate. Only time will help to heal the pain you will be suffering. I pray that you soon find some comfort in remembering the good times with Callie and knowing she is with so very many other friends in paradise. She is enjoying her new buddy, Bertie Pig, and he's probably the BEST B-Day gift Ever! This morning, I could tell that she knew it was her Special Day. I don't know how, but I could just tell. She insisted that I let them run around while I refreshed their cage, and my goodness! those piggies were All over the place! I have to be Really carefully when they're running around because they always want to hang around my feet for some reason. (???) And PS started lifting herself and trying to climb my ankle...it's almost as if she KNEW she was going to get some Extra treats today. Piggie Intuition, I suppose. Well, I just wanted to say HAPPY ADOPTION/BIRTHDAY to my Princess Snowflake and I Love my little girl sooooo much, and I hope she Enjoys many, many more... P.S. He was an elderly pig, six years old, but full of vim up until the very last. He was fully grown when we adopted him in May 2003 from the Berlin Animal Shelter, where he had been taken after being found abandoned in a park on a very cold morning in February, so his age is a guess. We think that Ernie had been abused, because while he was a very good cuddler, and often fell asleep on my lap, he remained distrustful of humans throughout his life. He was not a real "biter", because he was careful never to break flesh, but he would snap if he felt at all threatened. He was quite frightened of children, and we came to believe that he was perhaps bought as a "pocket pet", was mishandled by a child, defended himself, and then was left to freeze, starve or be eaten. Nevertheless, he came to largely trust both me and my partner, and especially loved napping in the lap of my purple bathrobe while I worked on the computer. He greatly enjoyed floortime, and was an expert at finding hidden treats. His favorite game in the world was to toss away a small plastic bowl to find the piece of cucumber hidden underneath. He began to fail after suffering a split tooth earlier this month, despite the very best efforts of our excellent vet (who, when we both had to be away one weekend, actually took him home with her). This same vet gave him the gentle release he needed when it was clear that there was no hope, and he died in the arms of my grieving partner. I believe elderly guinea pigs, or a guinea pig whose immune system is weak, are quite prone to bumblefoot, no matter how clean their surroundings are, or how well they're taken care of. I had a guinea pig, Adelle, who recovered from rather severe bumblefoot. Her vet told me to soak her foot in betadyne for 5 - 10 minutes a day, and then wrap it in clean cotton gauze, meanwhile keeping her cage scrupulously clean. And this worked! Shortly after her foot cleared up, we found out that she had cancer, and I believe that this was the underlying cause for the bumblefoot. We couldn't do anything for the cancer, but at least her foot no longer hurt. We recently lost Callie, so I know how heartbreaking it can be. Thanks to everyone for their kind words on Callie's passing. Meg and myself are doing a little better. She has informed me sternly that we have to find Cookie a new friend this week. I have a call in to our local pet shop who uses a very reputable breeder for a little girl. I wish we had a rescue here, but we don't, and our Humane Society doesn't take in piggies to be adopted. I'll let you know when we find Cookie's new friend. This is great group of folks, because you understand so well. These little creatures are so sweet and dear to our hearts. Most people out there have no idea what they're missing out on. If they could look at their little faces and those cute little lips, they'd been hooked big time. :) Hugs from me, Meg and Cookie Glenda in Douglas, GA From jaggs4 at sbcglobal.net Tue Sep 30 13:24:32 2008 From: jaggs4 at sbcglobal.net (ANDREW SILL) Date: Tue, 30 Sep 2008 10:24:32 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Gpdd] misc: Little Princess snowflake Message-ID: <905221.82517.qm@web80201.mail.mud.yahoo.com> Happy Happy? adoption day/birthday to you little Princess Snowflake.
