Penny and the Piggyfriends We were so very sorry to hear of the departure
for the Rainbow Bridge of your oldest and highly respected SCAMP, Satin
Piggyfriend. We had read about this terrible OD that affects these
pedigree pigs, and are so grateful that we are all "just" mongrels, or
Dolly Mixtures as we prefer to regard it, although as you know we are no
more immune to nasty diseases and illnesses than the next pig.We have to
say that Satin was indeed a very beautiful, aristocratic-looking piggie,
and it sounds as though her personality was equally special. We are glad
she was able to slip away peacefully in her sleep, and positive she knew
how very dearly she was loved. We hope you are able to find a suitable
new companion for Hope, who must feel bereft at the departure of such a
cherished friend. All the female Dolly Mixtures have been kept in groups,
and in fact this summer we were so few we were all in the the one double
hutch and run, so hopefully it will only be the very last who will have
to live alone, and she will hopefully have the boys for neighbours ...
although one never knows, things don't always go as expected. At least
Satin is now free from pain and disability, and popcorning with joy at
being reunited with Ping and Truffle, plus all the other Piggyfriends and
perhaps piggies from her previous home who are there waiting to be
reunited with her. Words are always inadequate, but hopefully you will
find some scrap of comfort in the fact that piggie slaves from across the
globe share in your sad sense of loss and wish you well. Debbie and the
10 Dolly Mixtures

"We patronize them for their incompleteness,
for their tragic fate of having taken a form so far below ourselves.
And therein we err, and greatly err.
For the animal shall not be measured by man.
In a world older and more complete than ours
they move finished and complete, gifted
with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained,
living by voices we shall never hear.
They are not brethren, they are not underlings;
they are other nations, caught with ourselves
in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners
of the splendour and travail of the earth".
