It sounds as though you and he had a tremendous battle on your hands over your last month or so, and we know only too well how distressing that can be, having experienced it numerous times ourselves. We are sure Widget knew how very much he was loved, and he sounds like a great little character. Hopefully he is now reunited with his best friend, Schocki, at the Bridge, free from pain and wheeking with joy in the lush green sunshine-filled meadow. We fully understand your not wanting to acquire more piggies just now. They are the most adorable creatures, but oh so fragile and short-lived, and how it breaks our hearts when they leave, particularly if they don't live as long as expected. Here's hoping the equipment he vacated goes to someone who is able to use it to rescue some piggies who would otherwise not have as good a life as you were able to give Widget and Schocki. She sounds like a wonderful little piggie, and we know how shocking it is when a piggie who has seemed fine suddenly departs for The Bridge without warning. We are sure she knew how much she was loved, and probably didn't suffer as her departure was so hurried. Babu Franklin, you in particular are going to miss your little companion so much, and as your slave is unable to send much time with you, we really hope someone will contact you who can adopt you into a harem of piggies. Our dear departed Claude was able to join a harem of 10 girlies on his 3rd birthday, after being a lone piggie before he was castrated, and it gave him a whole new lease of life to have so much company. The girlies were thrilled to have a man about the place as well. The nice thing about keeping piggies in groups is that there is less impact when one does depart for The Bridge; we feel Cherry's absence is less keenly felt than that of Fidget, whose single cagemate is now alone (though he does chat a lot to his neighbours, Scoot and Zebra). Please accept our deepest sympathy from across the ocean, and we will keep our fingers and claws crossed that Babu Franklin is able to find a new family to help distract him from his grief. Do let us all know what happens to him. Debbie and the Dix Dolly Mixtures in Northwest France ________________________________________________________________________ AOL's new homepage has launched. I am delighted to announce that Gingerbread and Mayflower are five years old. Some of you will know their story, how I collected them in utero with their mother Ginger, together with their sisters, Diamond and Peridot. Ginger had just had her first litter at the age of five and was already pregnant again. She was living wild in a garden and it was both a credit to Ginger and a miracle that the babes had survived the cold of an English winter. The strain of caring for her first two babes left Ginger without any milk for the next two, who, when they arrived, were tiny wobbly runts, whom I did not expect to survive. Although she could not feed them herself, Ginger cared for these two in every other way and they grew into plump healthy piggies. Ginger and Peridot are sadly no longer with us but Gingerbread and Mayflower can celebrate today's event with their older sister Diamond and all three can now be entered into the SCAMPS list. Thanks Debbie and I hope that you enjoyed your trip "home". Sam is now a SCAMP too. I don't know the exact date of his birthday but from the details supplied by his previous owner, he was born sometime this month in 2003 so he can celebrate today with the rest of my little herd. Romaine, cucumber and parsley all round and pass the carrot wine. Cheers!! Penny and the Piggyfriends. She had slowly declined over the last week and then stopped eating yesterday - a sure sign that the end was near. She took a bit of syringed water during the night but nothing else. She passed peacefully in her cage this morning surrounded by her 3 cage mates. Samantha was with us for 4 years and 2 months. She was a rescue from our vet's office where she had been abandoned by her original owners after they refused to pay for an operation to remove a nasty mammary tumor. At that time, our vet estimated her age to be between 1-3 years old, so she lived anywhere from 5 to 7+ years. A very respectable lifespan. I am going to miss her terribly. Yet, I know she led a great life and I take great joy in that. She was the most personable and gentle of my 4 pigs. She never failed to greet you and was always up for a head scratch or a cuddle. She was always first at the food dish and over the years became affectionately known as "Fat Sam" and "Wide Load". She survived operations for a mammary tumor and an abdominal tumor, several cases of mites and several more URI's. She had a grand time in Oxford at Prince Biscuit and Princess Jasmine's wedding and would never tell me what went on in Las Vegas with Gwen's Boys from Vegas. And, she was immortalized in Leah's book "The Adventures of Brownie Bear and Butterscotch, School's Out" as the model for Wally the Wacky Guinea Pig on page 13. She was a grand pig and our herd will not be the same without her. Sami, you were a beautiful, loving piggie. Thank you for gracing our lives. Now, run free forever over the Bridge with our Belgian piggies, Anakin and Dodger, and your friends, Sam and Rosie. Today is my older female piggy's birthday. Callie is 4 today. She has enjoyed mucho hay, cantaloupe (her fave), red delicious apple and fresh spinach. Our baby pig, whom we've had almost a week, is Cookie. Cookie is 2.5 months old. For one more week they're in separate cages, but they get to visit a little during floor time in their cozies and are always talking to each other when in their cages. Thanks to Cookie, our very laid back Callie is talking more, popcorning more and is "acting" more like a guinea pig than she has in a while. She's still kind of grouchy and doesn't like to be picked up. That's always a challenge to get her out of the cage to clean it. We have to practically bribe her with treats into her little cuddle cup and lift her out that way. Sometimes, that doesn't work and I have to scoop around her. That makes her mad and she tries to bite me. Any suggestions? She drew blood on my hand in two places last weekend during the "showdown". She's so sweet, but just so grumpy sometimes. Healthwise, she's in great shape. Callie hasn't had a playmate since she was around 3 mos old. Her cage mate passed away unexpectedly. Callie was living at my daughter's dad's house at the time. She has only lived in my house since Feb. 08. Hello to all fellow piggy friends. I love these little critters so much. I can't wait to get home from work to play with them. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <8CA7A8A65FA7DC7-890-967@WEBMAIL-DC03.sysops.aol.com> Congratulations to Gingerbread, Mayflower and Sam on becoming Senior Citizen Ageing Miracle Pigs, and joining the ever-growing subgroup of SCAMPS! Your slave must certainly be doing something right to have helped you reach such impressive ages after your difficult beginnings! May 6th will be the 5th anniversary of the dreadful day when 5 Dolly Mixtures were massacred by 2 dogs in our garden - the "video" of the moments when I found them all lying dead still plays vividly in my mind more often than I would like. Two days later, at my own request, the friend who gave me my first guinea pig gave me another 5, rescued from the Crocodile Woman who was once again selling her surplus stock as crocodile food to a reptilarium. Actually it was a mistake on my part, I was not ready for 5 different guinea pigs, and I don't think I ever quite forgave them for not being the precious, tame babies I had lost. But they are obviously over 5 years old now, having been weaned when I adopted them on 8th May, so they can now also become SCAMPS. Their names are Scrabble (Fidget's former companion, seemingly doing OK though he did split his front paw a couple of weeks ago and I feared he was going to bleed to death), and the girlies Ambree, Gisele, Caramel and Nuage. I never thought any of the Dolly Mixtures would make it to 5, and I do hesitate to celebrate their ages after losing Fidget and Cherry so soon after their 5th birthday celebrations. But still we hear of piggies maknig it to 6 or 7, and that has to give us all hope! Debbie ________________________________________________________________________ AOL's new homepage has launched. Fortunately he is doing much better, and we are hoping for a complete recovery. A few weeks ago Tumbleweed turned down his nightly carrot piece. That was extremely unusual for him. Then he didn't want his lunch treats the next day. I called the vet and was able to get an appointment for the afternoon. Some backstory: almost a year ago, Tumbleweed lost a bottom tooth, and it never regrew. Since then he has had regular teeth trims. We also cut up his veggies for him and hand-feed them to him. (He is very particular. Sometimes he wants them in cubes, sometimes in strips, etc.) Well, it turned out that the place where the bottom tooth had been had developed an infection, and the infection had created an abscess beneath his chin. I was shocked! He went into surgery that afternoon. My vet lanced the abscess, drained it, and put him on antibiotics. I felt terrible for not noticing the abscess, but even after I knew it was there, I couldn't see it when I just looked at him, and it was sometimes hard to locate. At any rate, my husband and I had to open it and drain it for a couple of weeks. We never got much out of it, but now you can barely tell it was there. Long story short, Tumbleweed's antibiotic regimen was metrondiazole (spelling?) in the morning and at night and Baytril in mid-afternoon. He is now through with the Baytril but still on the metrondiazole. We have also been giving probiotics. Some days we gave some plain yogurt, and some days we syringed chewable acidophilus mixed with water (he won't eat the chewable itself), but lately we have been giving Critical Care made into cigar-shaped forms. (Actually they look like snakes, but Tumbleweed does not like that word.) At one point we also had to give Reglan because he developed gas and didn't feel like eating. There were a couple of days I actually thought we were going to lose him. Fortunately he didn't have a blockage, and the Reglan began to improve his appetite and gut motility in a few hours. I now realize that his abscess was around longer than I'd originally thought. My other piggie, Friday, was trying to tell us Tumbleweed was sick. He kept kissing Tumbleweed and would lick beneath Tumbleweed's chin. Friday really loves Tumbleweed, so we just thought he was being affectionate. Now we know that Dr. Friday was trying to get rid of the abscess! We now watch Dr. Friday very closely to see what he has to say about Tumbleweed's condition. Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to share the story in case it might help other piggies who have problems with their teeth. Don't use acidophilus its the probiotic for milk, pigs don't eat milk so it wont help, get one called Benebac either from the vet or the health food store, sorry I don't know which 2 in rabbits abscess and other infections are usually hard to clear up and the course of antibiotics is extended to at least a month, some times much longer if the antibiotic fails they can sometimes implant beads into the wound these beads are lased with the antibiotic but it sound like your Tumbleweeds' wound is very small. Also if you need another treatment my vet uses cloramphenicol which a lot of docs wont use because it not legal to use on humans. To use it on pigs you glove up, goggles covering clothes. the problem is it a tiny faction of people it can cause aplastic anemia, very bad. When i had a pig with abscess in chest that had dripped down from ears we put the cloramphenicol in DMSO and put it in he ears, and then just used the antibiotic itself to flush the wound, its a very effective treatment and very effective antibiotic If you have perfect confidence in your doc that's great i know you prob do as you re so experienced with piggies if for any reason you want to check out new one you can go can go to the houserabbit society homepage they have a list, also you can subscribe to etherbun Google it and sign up as a member just write a note that says as the title "need bunny savvy vet in your city your state" you don't need to write anything in the message or bother to explain that it's for a piggy. We provide him with enough food and hay, so I'm wondering if there's any other reason for his behaviour. A little concerned for his health as well. regards, Joylania

I am very esscited about the wedding and meeting everyone. I'm nervous too. We have been slowed down here 'cause of Charlie going to the Bridge and all, but I want to take the place (as if any pig could from what I hear) of the Jolly Rodents. I almost was a Jolly Rodent but Charlie went to the Bridge long before I was ready to be inducted. But I want to have friends and adventures like they had. Yes yes yes, Igor, pleeeeze, the dreadlocks! I'll really need them. Thank you so much for offering. Don't you guyz just love that Captain Jack Sparrow? I want to be like a Jolly Rodent but I want to look like Captain Jack. Actually, from all that 've heard, Captain Jack Sparrow and the Jolly Rodents weren't all that different and that in a lot of ways dey waz alike. Momma needs to write thank youse for all the kind peoples who wrote about Charlie. She loved you all for writing so much, tho she cried as she read me the letters. She cried when she wasn't reading letters, too. She's also sorting out some stuff with doctors and what she calls "transplant facilities." I guess last week one of her doctors told her that she's coming down to a time line to get on some lung transplant list. There are two placez she can have retesting (and surgery if she's lucky) done, but one is pretty far away and she doesn't know anyone in Cleveland. It's at a place called the Cleveland Clinic. The other is closer and has her more recent test results but it's a teaching hospital, and she's worried about the after care. Surgeons are great at both places, she says. Well, Iz better say goodnight, but I'm going to have a snack before curling up in my cuddle cup for the night. Writing makes a piggy hungry. Ooooooooh boy *popcorns wildly*. Have you heard from teddy?? We have to see if we can take the convertible on the plane. That thing will be suck a chick magnet!! (ofcourse my heart belongs to my mavis... *stares into space*). How do you guys go 'stag partying' abroad?? Here in the netherlands it usually involves a whole day. In the morning the guys (or girls if it is a bachelorette party) pick up the unsuspecting victim (it is usually not the day before the wedding in case of hangovers or unsuspected rashes) and they go do an activity. Guys in the netherlands like to go paintballing or lasershooting or play golf (usually the bachelor is dressed up funny, bunnies and babies are popular). Girls are more into the Spa thing or a workshop of making your own jewellry or cooking, or a dance class. After the dayactivity they usually go out to eat and then the eveningactivity starts, this usually involves clubbing and drinking and making the bachelor wear a silly outfit and stuff like that. Do I need to wear a toxido? :-S I do not have a 'job' during the wedding yet so maybe i'll just hold paws with my mavis and sit in the audience while you guys do all the work *ghegheghe* ;-). Being a chauffeur would be great too btw ;-) Lots of excited wheek from Igor!!! p.s. do you have a present for lady bug?? Maybe its a good idea to get in her good graces by going all out. That would save us a lot of trouble in the future... Maybe its a good idea to chip in together?? I'm thinking maybe a little cell phone with which she can call duke, or some polish for her cane.. Okay... have to go practice on my SAS skills ;-) _________________________________________________________________ Check je Hotmail nu ook op je mobiel! http://windowslivemobile.msn.com/BrowserServiceHotmail.aspx?lang=nl-nl From dogcatpiggymom at yahoo.com Tue May 6 09:53:03 2008 From: dogcatpiggymom at yahoo.com (Joanne Colangelo) Date: Tue, 6 May 2008 06:53:03 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Gpdd] Misc: Guinea Pig Blog for your information Message-ID: <992175.43851.qm@web33103.mail.mud.yahoo.com> http://www.dolittler.com/index.cfm/2008/5/5/dogs.cats.veterinarian.veterinary.Guinea.pig Be sure to read the comments that follow! I thought I would let you all know that little Will went to the bridge last night. He was staying with a great sitter who ended up having to take him to the vet's, then give him pain/antibiotic meds almost the entire time we were away. He had had his bottom teeth removed, and a rather large infection 'cured' a while back, and seemed to be okay. Apparently the infection moved into his jaw, and by Sunday he was refusing his critical care and not moving. I couldn't face putting him through anything more, so the nice people at our emergency clinic helped him over the bridge. We buried him today, and had quite long cuddles with his buddies Rocky and Feef. Will was five years old or thereabouts, and had lived on his own since his sister died. He had been neutered so he could live with her, something I won't do again, but Will bore it well. He was always the elder brother to the other two, ignoring most of their shenanigans, and simply eating his food. We will miss him. Some piggies like to tear their paper into strips, some munch it and some make interesting shapes out of it. Sam is a particularly enthusiastic paper tearer and makes paper doilies. One day I hope to find that he has made a row of cut out paper piggies. No harm has ever come to any of my herd through this behaviour which I put down to the piggies being creative. We are so glad that Momma Mia made it through her pregnancy safely and had five lovely babies. We send very belated condolences, though, for the three who did not survive. It was very touching to read of how all of you shed tears for them; they were loved even if they never spent time in the world. We are sure they are sending thanks to you from the Bridge. My husband was holding him up one day and I was playing with his dewlap when I felt it--it seemed huge! And I felt so guilty about not finding the darn thing, but when Willie was sitting, lying, walking around, etc., you couldn't even see it. I asked my vet about it and she said they can grow very fast and it is not uncommon for them to be overlooked; still I felt like I had neglected my baby. We put Willie on Baytril at first until the lab results came back that said the infection was from Bacteroides, which is an anaerobic bacteria that Baytril will not work on. We then put him on Metronidizole for 30 days. He hated the stuff and he also stopped eating for a bit. I was force feeding him Critical Care laced with Bene-bac, then hit on the idea to give him Reglan. That finally got his appetite going again. He came through all that fine, but he lost one of his bottom incisors (we think that's where the abscess originated) and now he's developed another lump on his back end, and I think he's developing another bladder stone. *sigh* Poor little guy--every time we get one thing taken care of, something else crops up. Did your vet have a culture and sensitivity done on the pus from the abscess? As someone mentioned before, chloramphenicol can be used as well; it is effective for anaerobes and conditions like meningitis and bone infections because it can penetrate tissues--something most other antibiotics can't do. But--it is toxic to humans, so many vets don't like to use it. You practically have to put on a HAZMAT suit before giving it to your piggy. It's a wonderful drug, but it doesn't have a very wide margin of safety. I hope lil' Tumbleweed is feeling better. The Squad will be sending healing wheeks your way. -Stacy and the Squee Squad --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now. This could well be a Urinary Tract Infection ( UTI ), for which your vet will prescribe antibiotics. Simone will feel uncomfortable and the urine can scald the skin making it very sore. UTIs are not uncommon in piggies. Have a look at this page on GuineaLynx http://www.guinealynx.info/uti.html You can bathe her underneath, dry her very gently and apply a barrier cream to keep the urine from her skin. Sometimes a bladder infection can put a piggy off her food. My Daisy has one at the moment and I have been supplementing her food by syringe feeding. She is normally a big eater and is almost sucking the pellet mush from the syringe. Tempt Simone with favourite veggies. Daisy has been off veggies for a couple of days but is enjoying an assortment of tasty weeds from the garden. I have started her on a course of Septrin antibiotic and am also giving her children's liquid Nurofen, which is an anti-inflammatory as well as a painkiller. It also tastes nice, being orange flavoured. In England, I have also treated this with a ladies' cystitis remedy from in the pharmacy ( different dosage of course ). Another remedy is the old fashioned way that this was treated in humans, using Barley Water ( not the sweet drink sold in bottles but the home made variety ). Persisitent UTIs can be helped by giving your piggy plain unsweetened cranberry juice. For now, just keep her clean and fresh and see what the vet recommends. Don't worry. If this is a UTI it is easily treated. Good luck at the vets Simone, Penny and the Piggyfriends. It sounds as though he was a right little character, and must have known how very much he was loved. It is an achievement to care for a poorly piggie, and a tribute to your love and care that he survived so long in spite of health challenges. He will have appreciated that last act of love you performed for him, helping his departure to join his sister at The Bridge, but we are sure it must have been incredibly difficult for you. We want you to know that we are thinking of you at this very sad time, and sending hugs and wheeks across the ocean to you. Make it semi liquid and feed by spoon. At the vet ask for a 3 cc syringe with no needle for feeding use it instead of the spoon you first used. Set her on enough towels so she stays dry the vet will have to test for urinary tract ot bladder infection. You use guinea pig pellets that aren't too old right, not rabbit pellets, must have gp pellets and if you have not been using them tell the vet. He needs to check her female organs for hormone imbalance and tumors, has she lost hair on her flanks although this is not likely as she is eating less not more, unless she is in end stage disease, is she spayed? How old is she With any luck she just has an infection of some sort, have him look at her teeth including the molars in back. Make sure he knows allot about gp's its better if you get a specialist, look for on in the yellow pages that says they treat "exotics" write back and tell use the results so we can tell you where to go from there. You may wish to have her treated for mites with Ivermectin, don't bother with a skin scrape test, they are usually false negative, plus this medicine treats a whole lot of internal parasites, but if he says she's too sick wait till she is better. All 4 should be treated. Make sure your whole herd is getting as much timothy or orchard grass hay for their gut health as they can eat 24 hrs a day, fiber needs, teeth grinding. Keep track of their weights every week, every day when they are sick. Make sure she is warm but can get away from heat if she gets too warm. For her illness she may need pain meds like metacam (an nsaid) and reglan to regulate and encourage her gut to work , sometimes cisapride is added as well for the gut Pain meds are important if she seems in pain Have him check her all over for lumps and bumps, her ears, take temp, check feet all over etc. When you write back let us know her complete diet including salads and treats (not good) and the ingredients in her pellets, what her bedding is if she gets exercise good luck Sandy From JAYHAWKME at aol.com Sat May 10 13:56:59 2008 From: JAYHAWKME at aol.com (JAYHAWKME at aol.com) Date: Sat, 10 May 2008 13:56:59 EDT Subject: [Gpdd] Health: Update on Simone Message-ID: Simone had her visit at the vet yesterday. She had a thorough examination with x-rays. The x-rays showed no bladder stones, although the vet did find something which may be a tumour (not affecting her organs). She refused food all afternoon and basically just wanted to be left alone. I decided to syringe feed her (a mixture of ground cavy cusine and pumpkin) around 7 and again at 9. I checked her at 3:30 in the morning and she was up and around and eating a little of her pellets and timothy hay. The vet gave me Arsenicum, and I gave Simone one dropper full about an hour ago. I had to wait 30 minutes before offering her food. She eagerly grabbed a slice of carrot and a leaf of Romaine. I am to call the vet tomorrow before giving her further dosage of the Arsenicum. We believe Simone's wet butt was probably caused by her prolonged lying in one spot. Thank you for all your help and concern. Kathy & the herd of 4 **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Too much salt is bad for the human diet and we are always being encouraged to cut down on our own consumption. The same goes for guinea pigs. Although your piggy is obviously enjoying her salt lick, she will consume far more than is good for her. Piggies can become addicted to the salt lick and don't know when to stop. So, personally, I would recommend you take it away and give her lots of tasty veggies instead. I love the name Kiss 'n' Kate! Penny and the Piggyfriends. Message-ID: <006901c8b360$5a772850$0302a8c0@inspiron1150> To anyone with a piggy with arthritis, in the hope that the following might help a piggy in need and that this remedy is available in all of your countries. My SCAMP Diamond was diagnosed with arthritis in one back leg a few weeks ago. She was bunny hopping around her pen trying to keep up with her younger sisters and it was not hard to determine the reason. Our Rodentologist has had some success using Potter's Tabritis tablets as recommended by Peter in his "Old Age" page http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/oldage.htm and gave me a handful of tablets for Diamond to try. She warned me that an occasional piggy can develop diarrhoea after taking these so I watched Diamond very carefully and she is fine. After a couple of days, the bunny hopping stopped and she is now running around with Gingerbread and Mayflower, bounces around like a piglet and can sit up and beg for her food once more. I am delighted with the results as, I am sure, is Diamond. The tablets take forever to dissolve. I break a tablet in half and put in in a tiny jar. The ones that contain individual portions of preserves are ideal. Add the 1.5 ml of water and leave for an hour or so. Tipping the little jar at an angle so that the half tablet is completely covered will speed up the process. Diamond loves the taste and is always disappointed when it is all gone, reaching out for the syringe for more. Anyone who reads my posts will know that I am a big fan of herbal remedies and I will be trying these tablets myself when old age gets the better of me. Penny and the Piggyfriends. Awhile back, my vet suggested that his teeth might be causing all his abscesses, and pointed me to a good local dentist, which turned out to be one of the top animal dentists in the state. Luckily, he had a lot guinea pig experience, not just with cats and dogs. The dentist ended up removing the tooth because it was mangled and decaying in his jaw, and had no chance of being saved. The good news is that his molars are looking fine. I'm hoping that all my piggy's abscess problems will clear up now, too. Fireball is eating okay, although he's hiding in his pigloos a lot. He's still on antibiotics. He will need his top teeth trimmed now because of the loss of the lower tooth. The dentist mentioned that toenail clippers will work, along with high powered dental equipment. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what works best for their piggies that need teeth trimmed? I could take him to the vet to get his teeth trimmed, but I'd rather not. It's not the cost, but he gets so nervous when being taken the vet. I'd rather wrap him up in a towel at home (piggy burrito!) and do it there. Message-ID: <007801c8b4f4$d188c300$0302a8c0@inspiron1150> Hello GPDD friends, Daisy Piggyfriend here. I am sorry to be late with details about Lady Bug's birthday and the camping weekend but I have been a little under the weather. Our Rodentologist was concerned that I might have a bladder stone and I had to have an Xray. The Slave was very worried as I was not eating very well. As LAPS President I have a certain girth to maintain so she was syringe feeding me some yummy stuff. Luckily for us all, the Xray showed that I did not have a stone ( Phew!! ) and am on meds for a nasty bladder infection. One of my meds tastes of banana and the other of orange so they are nice to take and I am feeling so much better that I can type this message. I had asked Gulliver to post to you all but the Slave kept taking her laptop to work with her. She doesn't realise how much we all need to use it when she is away. My dear friend Lady Bug's birthday conveniently falls on a Sunday, 15th. June so we can have our camping weekend on the 14th./15th. June. and celebrate this wondrous occasion at the same time with lots of carrot cake and other goodies. You will need to book your flights with PigAir to go to London Gatwick Airport. Our Slave's husband works there so he knows the PigAir Terminal and he has offered to run a shuttle service to bring you all here to Piggyfriends. For those of you travelling by car, I can send a map and directions. There is plenty of parking space and we are all excited about seeing Igor's new vehicle. Shadow is looking forward to playing SAS soldiers with Fugly, Igor, Captain Jack and any other boars who'd like to come and, to this end, he and Frodo have been busy making camouflage netting out of Slave's strawberry nets but for those of us who prefer to laze around, there will plenty of that, I can assure you. Most of you will still be exhausted after Princess Snowflake and Teddy's wedding! For those of you unsure about the rigours of camping, there is lots of room indoors or there is the summerhouse, where you can enjoy the outdoor life without the bother of erecting a tent. Speaking of which, I do hope that Fireball and Little John will be able to come as they have experience of camping and can show us all how it is done. Our Slave thinks that anything less than a 5 star hotel is "roughing it" so has no idea how to make a tent stay up but I am confident that we will get there in the end. Piggies are very resourceful. We built some amazing stuff for the PigOlympics didn't we? I hope that Duke will be able to escort Lady Bug to her plane in California. We can't wait to see our old friends again and meet a lot of new ones. Love to you all from Daisy Piggyfriend. Result, my forearms had mended nicely. Now, there's my new little buddy, Captain Jack, and my again bleeding forearm. Lots of little tiny pin prick holes and they do actually bleed. Problem -- those sharp little guy nails. I trimmed a few of them perhaps 3 weeks ago but the quick is almost at the nail tips and has been since I acquired him. How do I just barely clip these nail tips without cutting the quick? (Try saying that 5 time really fast!) He's getting so lovable. He just loves to run up his momma's arm and chest. And with those sharp sharp baby claws...ouch!! But I'm so afraid of hurting him. His nails are clear so I can see the quick but that doesn't seem to help much. There's just so little space. And, if I let them grow a bit longer, the quick will grow, too, will it not? Those who have been part of the digest for a long time know my record with nail clipping. Maybe I'll take him to the local vet who does not see GPs for illnesses but who will cut their nails and trim their teeth. Still, I don't see how even she could manage it unless she has the eyes of a hawk and the nerves and hands of true surgeon. Nervously, Alge ************** Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Lets hope that the Dolly Mixtures slave is happy for us all to visit. The only tourist attraction I know in France is the eiffel tower which would make fantastic photo oppurtunity can you just see us in Igors hot pink car photographed by the eiffel tower how awesome would that be, plus they have vineyards?there and I dont know about you but I sure love a grape or two,?I am sure the Dollys can tell us what else there is to see and do in France. Hey Duke you wanted some games Igor mentioned paint balling and that would be fantastic practice for when we do SAS training at camp Piggyfriends and then in the evening we could play more sedate games like truth or dare hehehe. Need some game suggestions in case any boar doesnt want to paintball? (as if) if they dont want to get hit they can just find some bushes to hide under and sleep. Dont worry Princess the boars weekend is 2 weeks before wedding so every boar will be recovered and presentable for the main event. Hello new buddy Captain Jack, do you mind if I call you C.J, mummy says they love using initials in the American soaps she used to watch before the got axed over here. You have very responsible job for wedding I dont know what a ring carrier does but it sounds vital, the only ring bearer I have heard of was a hobbit and it got him in a lot of trouble, dont think your job is the same sort though so you should be safe. Hope your slave can bear to be parted from you for the boars weekend and the camping I am sure you will be ace at paintballing and SAS training, sounds like the piggyfriends are making great assault course for us and I cant wait, we could also play pirates either on boars weekend or camping or both, so pack your best pirate costume, lots of bright colours and silly hats. I used a small nail scissor and did it by myself so it can be done. As I recall, I would hold him on my lap facing towards me and squeeze his mouth gently to expose the tooth and then just cut it so it would be even with the other one. It was just the one that got longer than the other one. It was pretty easy but then maybe he was just a good "patient." He was certainly special to me. If I got down on the floor and put my mouth up against the grid and asked for kisses he would kiss me on the lips. I still miss that little guy even though he went to the Bridge in November of 2002. More to the story: I called "Pet Depot" after the girl left leaving her piggy here with me and signing a release form. She didnt leave her name with them but the "purchase date" was the same. They said she called them the day before, said the piggy nibbled her nose and ate her NOSE RING AND SHE COULDN'T AFFORD A VET BILL,WHAT DO I DO?! They refused to take the piggy back, she just bought her 12 DAYS AGO on APRIL 30TH!!!!I won't get into my words with this store...LOL After finding this out I spoke to my vet.He said he wouldn't worry,"IF" she really did eat it,which he didn't think she probably did,she would probably pass it.Keep an eye on her, which I do anyway, call them or bring her in if she doesn't seem right. Well,at any rate,I get lied to AGAIN! I am searching for a loving forever home for her.I have no reason to think at this point she did swallow a nose ring.I will watch her for a while before placing her to make sure. It's ironic that there are several messages about nail trimming in my digest this morning. DD and I are slaves to our two piggies, Callie and Cookie. Callie is 4 years old and Cookie is 3 months old. They still live in separate cages, as they try to fight it out when they're together. They do get to talk through the cages and have floor time in their cozies, which is really cute. They talk and touch noses. It's in the big cage that they both become dominant, unwilling to give even an millimeter. They're happy, though, and that's what counts. It was time to take Callie to the vet "to get her nails done", and since Cookie's baby nails are sharp like cat claws, we decided to take her too. I made an appointment and we went yesterday afternoon. Cookie and Callie both have very long cuticles, and I'm nervous about doing it myself. They each have three white feet and one black foot. It's weird that their feet match exactly on the color scheme. Front right foot on each is jet black with black nails. Our vet tech, Ashley, is great at it though. He trimmed Callie's with no problem and was able to trim "Squirmy Cookie's" fairly easily. He pretty much "tipped" Cookie's, since there really wasn't much growth, just sharp points beginning to get some curl-under to them. Both of our girls behaved, didn't fuss and didn't use the potty in their cozies either. I was a very proud piggy mom. For a nominal fee ($5 each), they get the trim and everyone at the office gets to visit with them. This was Cookie's first trip to the vet and she did very well. Our vet sees a few guinea pigs, but not that often. The doctor and the vet techs love our two babies and think they are so cute. We also got them weighed. Cookie weighs right at 1 pound, but still looks really slim because of her age. She eats all the time. Callie, at her mature stage in life, weighed in at 2.6 pounds. She's round and healthy, but not fat. They eat well (actually better than we do) and love their hay, guinea pig food, spinach, dandelion greens fresh from the yard, cantaloupe, apple, orange and honey dew melon. Neither likes cucumber and will only occasionally nibble watermelon, strawberries or banana. Callie alone likes the very dark green part of romaine, but only every so often. Same with baby carrots. She had gotten kind of finicky, but is eating better since we got Cookie three weeks ago. We swear they have ESP, since you can look over there and they're eating or doing the same thing at the same time in their cages. I love these two girls, and my daughter does too. We tag team it at night before bed time with her giving them hay and food and adding extra bedding if needed, and I hit the fridge for the fruit and veg. They start talking as soon as they hear the fridge door and love the sounds of plastic bags. They brighten our day and I can't wait to see them first thing in the morning. They get fresh goodies in the morning, as a late afternoon snack when DD gets home from school around 3:30 and again around 10 p.m. They are shiny and happy. They're both getting baths on Saturday. Callie does good, but this will be Cookie's first one. Should be interesting. They're both short hairs, so don't get their "Saturday nite baths" all that often. But they both need one now. Their hair under their chins seems a little sticky/stiff from cantaloupe and honey dew juice. Sorry it got a little long. I just can't help it when it comes to "the girls". Callie is calico (mostly black and white with two patches of light strawberry blonde), and Cookie black and white, just like an Oreo cookie. Hence the name. Have a good weekend, ya'll. I had a human baby in October and life has never been the same. My fur babies definitely notice that I don't have as much time for them, but they seem to be pretty forgiving for now. I don't have much time to read the digest, and I've really missed the sense of community from the gpdd. I've noticed that Felix has been drinking a lot lately. Sometimes it seems like he drinks every five minutes. I have a small bowl under the water bottle to catch drips, but it fills up daily so I'm not sure if Felix is just playing with the water, drinking a lot, or is just a very sloppy drinker. I'm hoping it's the first or the third. Does anyone know of a water bottle that isn't crazy loud? Whenever Felix or Zephyr drink, it sounds like they're pounding metal against metal and it seems especially loud in the middle of the night. Zephyr has another cyst. He had one about 2 years ago on his upper leg and it burst. Luckily, our vet was still able to remove it and he healed very well after looking like Frankenpig for awhile. She said it was a sebaceous cyst. This time the cyst is on his tummy and I'm hoping it's just sebaceous again and that it doesn't burst! I hope everyone and everypig are doing well! I know you haven't heard from us in a while, but whee are still here and enjoying the digest a lot. Poor little Flaco Paco has a toe problem, and I'd love to get some advice (and to have you listen to the saga of my ridiculous day). Yesterday my boyfriend and I noticed Flaco's big toe on his right back paw was *really* swollen, and took him to a new vet today (our usual vet doesn't work on the weekends). This vet had been recommended by a guinea pig lover (and was recommended as a good exotics vet from the house rabbit society), so I felt pretty confident. However, the visit didn't go as ideally as I had hoped. They were running very late, and managed to see us at 2 (our appt. was at 1:30), which was their closing time. So there was an air of hurry, which didn't bode well for my questions. Basically, little Flaco had somehow managed to get a hair wrapped very tightly around his toe, and it was cutting off his circulation. The vet managed to remove it, had the tech put ointment on it, and bandage it nicely. The tech told me that, if the bandage came off, I could just put some bacitracin on it and re-bandage it (which involved 5 different layers of different kinds of bandage). I was a little worried, because I knew that some antibiotics are bad for piggies, but I couldn't remember which ones. So I asked the vet (not the tech), and she told the tech to go get me some topical sulfatrim. But she also said they had put bacitracin on Flaco, and when I asked if that was safe, she said something pretty indirect, like "it's fine if animals lick it off," and then I tried to ask if it was safe for GUINEA PIGS, and I think she said it was fine, but it didn't seem like she was listening (she was doing a million things at once). Anyway, then we get home and I look up the list of dangerous meds on guinealynx (http://www.guinealynx.info/dangerous_medications.html), and see bacitracin, and start trying to cut the bandage off as fast as humanly possible while my boyfriend calls Angell memorial (in Boston, where we are) to ask what to do. By the time the bandage is off (it took *forever* to get it off) and I've already started rinsing his foot in water, the person at Angell says topical is okay. So now I've taken off the bandage and exposed his poor foot to tap water, which I'm sure is full of bacteria (I was really rushed and I was convinced he was going to die from the bacitracin and figured tap water was worth the risk--I didn't have anything else). Then I put the topical sulfatrim on and re-bandaged, which was extremely difficult and I'm sure I did an awful job. I don't *think* it's too tight--I tried to be really careful about that. So, I feel completely stupid for putting his foot under tap water. I have a vet that makes housecalls, and I will try to get him out Monday to look at it. I could go back to the first vet, but I'm not really sure how to feel about her. I suppose she didn't do anything wrong by putting the bacitracin on topically, but why not use sulfatrim? I think what happened is that the vet tech took over and didn't know, but that's not cool! We have another issue too, which is how much metacam, if any, to give. Flaco seems totally fine--is eating, hopping, chutting around-- it doesn't *seem* like he's in pain. And I remember reading that metacam may make some piggies lose their appetite. So my boyfriend doesn't want to give him any, and I want to give him maybe a half dose and see how he does. Does anyone have any opinions about metacam? Thanks for reading such a long post. I just really had to get that off my chest. I feel horrible in the first place for not noticing the toe sooner, and I'm just so worried it will get infected now! (also, I forgot to mention he's on oral sulfatrim too, so hopefully that will be helpful (although we haven't given him the first dose yet)). I also don't know whether to give this vet a second chance (clearly, I will use my visiting vet when I can schedule him, but I need a place open on Saturdays (or ideally, 24 hours)). I know I can always go to Angell but I also know they are about 5 times more expensive than other places (and I don't think that's an exaggeration). So if anyone in the area (Boston, MA) has a vet recommendation, that would be wonderful too. Thank you so much for listening. I'm sending healing thoughts to all ailing piggies, and to those slaves who recently lost a piggie. Poor little Flaco! Lady Bug sends healing kisses to him and wants you to know that she takes Metacam every day for her arthritis and does just fine. I've never heard of Metacam affecting appetite. What makes you think your tap water will hurt your little one? What bacteria do you think is in the water? It really is fine or your local water agency would have been sued by now : ) You were in the right spot for info when you went to Guinealynx, you just didn't go far enough. There is a section on pain management as well as a guide to vets for people looking for one. Scritches to Flaco and it sounds as though you're doing fine with him. I was (am) worried about the tap water because I *think* wounds should be flushed with diluted betadine or salt water, not tap water. But at the time I was rushing and just wanted to get the bacitracin off--I didn't think there was enough time. The wound isn't large, but I do think the cut is pretty deep. The vet said that poor Flaco had a chance of losing his toe! In terms of GL: where is the pain management section? Is it this: http://www.guinealynx.info/pain.html ?? That site doesn't have much info about metacam. And then there is a different page on GL with metacam dosing, but I didn't see any discussion of possible side effects. I did a bit of forum searching, but didn't have much luck. But it's good to hear that Lady Bug has no problem with metacam. We went ahead and gave Flaco a half dose this morning and will see what happens. Thank you so much again! love, Ginger and Flaco paco On May 18, 2008, at 1:44 AM, joan fagalde wrote: > Hi Ginger. If Flaco Paco had a very large lesion on his body somewhere, then another topical (such as sulfatrim) might be called for. Since you have him on oral sulfatrim, I wouldn't worry about having put his foot in tap water; besides, if the toe was just swollen and the skin wasn't broken then he wouldn't have been exposed to any bacteria that might be in the water. Was the Metacam prescribed by the vet you saw? Metacam is a great drug and most pigs like the taste, however, if he doesn't seem to be in any pain and he's holding his weight on that foot, it's probably better not to give him any. It is an NSAID and can cause upset tummy and anorexia (refusal to eat). Best not to give a drug if it's not needed. Also, it usually should not be given longer than 4 or 5 days in a row unless specifically called for by your vet (can cause liver damage if used long term). BTW, the usual dose of Metacam is 0.2 mg/kg by mouth once a day (with food or after they've eaten). To calculate that, say you have a 1kg (2.2lb) guinea pig and the concentration of the Metcam is 0.5 mg/ml. You figure out what your piggy needs in mg (0.2 mg/kg x 1kg = 0.2 mg) and then divide that by the concentration of the drug to get the amount in mls (0.2 mg divided by 0.5 mg/ml = 0.4ml). There is a good explanation of dosage calculations on the Guinea Lynx site. I must caveat this by saying I am *not* a vet and have not yet taken my licensure boards for vet tech; I just know this from experience. If your vet tells you otherwise, by all means, follow the vet's instructions. You're right, normally you would flush wounds with dilute Betadine (very dilute), saline, or dilute chlorhexidine (Nolvasan/ Chlorhexiderm/ Hibiclens). Still, since you are giving him oral antibiotics combined with topical antibiotics, he should be fine. That little bit of tap water shouldn't hurt unless he is seriously immunocompromised. Side effects for Metacam are normally upset stomach and refusal to eat b/c their tummy hurts. If you give it with food, you shouldn't have that problem. I think I have answered everyone privately but also wanted to offer this public thanks. Unfortunately we discovered last week that the abscess had returned. Tumbleweed's buddy, Friday (now Dr. Friday) let us know the bad news. He began looking under Tumbleweed's chin, so we went back to the vet ASAP. My vet lanced it again and put Tumbleweed back on Baytril. (Tumbleweed had been continuing on the Metrondiazole, but apparently that wasn't enough by itself.) My vet also has sent off a culture to see if the infection is anaerobic, aerobic, or some combination of the two. The new Baytril is actually a stronger version of the Baytril we got originally, and it began to upset Tumbleweed's tummy. This morning we were really worried about him. He didn't want to eat much and was looking quite tired. Fortunately we had one dose of Reglan left, gave it to him, and he began to improve within a couple of hours. I am going to pick up some more Reglan tomorrow morning. Of course, we've also been using a probiotic. Whew. In addition, we've been checking Tumbleweed each night and cleaning the abscess. At the moment, Tumbleweed is eating pellets, I am happy to report. Thanks again. I hope we can get rid of the abscess, no matter how long it takes. Our little guy is quite a fighter. Message-ID: Some of you may remember that my sweet lady guinea pig Nani Alice recently died, leaving Babu Franklin all by his lonesome. At that time, I was either going to look for a middle-aged to older female to join Babu, or find Babu another home where he could have the company of other guinea pigs. Well, I know a woman who is very sweet and responsible, and used to be a co-worker of mine. She and her family love animals and have three piggies of their own. To make sure that I would not be handing over an ailing creature, Babu got his regular checkup yesterday from the local exotics vet and got a clean bill of health. His adoptive human family came over this afternoon to meet Babu Franklin, really liked him (and he seemed comfortable with them too -- he even came out of his cave into the "open" even though there were four of them he had never met before!) and took him to their home. They will see how he gets along with their other piggies. If it doesn't work out, he can always come back to me (they live only about a half hour away), and if it does work out he'll have a much better living situation than he could ever have with me. This family doesn't have a lot of money, and so I will be covering his future vet bills, which I would have done anyway of course had he stayed with me. It feels so strange to be sitting and typing in my office room, where Babu lived until just about an hour ago -- and to hear no little rustlings, no metallic clics of the water bottle, no gnawing of teeth against wood, or crunching of veggies. After Nani Alice died I handled Babu a lot more so he wouldn't be lonely, and we began to bond more -- so it's a particularly hard time to say goodbye. Because I'm allergic to guinea pigs, Babu's leaving signifies not only his individual departure, but also most likely the end of my ever living again with members of this sweet, gentle species. Well, thanks for humoring me and reading such a long e-mail. I miss my little Babu Franklin, but I have high hopes he will blend in well in his new surroundings and know he will be happiest with the company of his own kind. I'm really grateful for the GPDD--that there are people here that understand the anxiety over making the right treatment decisions! Here's the update: Flaco seems to be doing very well!! He has remained perky and hungry, and we haven't given him any metacam except for the first day (and it seemed to make him tired, although it's hard to tell). If I ever need to give it in the future, I will make sure to give it on a full stomach. We had our traveling vet visit him yesterday, and he said that the toe looked pretty good, and that Flaco most likely won't lose it (the first vet thought that was a possibility)! He also said that the first vet had prescribed the wrong dose of oral sulfatrim (it's supposed to be .6cc 2x per day, and the first vet had prescribed .2cc 1x per day! It's possible that what the first vet gave me was a different concentration, I suppose????). So our nice traveling vet gave us some new sulfatrim at a known concentration, and Flaco has been doing fairly well drinking it. (I also showed the traveling vet the GL page with the sulfatrim (bactrim) dosages, and he agreed with it). Today, the swelling seems to have gone down a fair amount, and I'm just praying he will keep doing well. I'm so proud of him! I know there are a lot of piggies in much worse shape and I'm sending them healing wheeks. Healing wheeks to Tumbleweed, too! I just whipped off an e-mail to the shelter and suggested that, at the very least, they put newspaper over the wire. I hope this was a good thing to suggest. I know that many shelters do not have the resources to get special cages. My main concern is that these piggies are happy and healthy so that they can find wonderful forever homes. Message-ID: <928902.59987.qm@web83810.mail.sp1.yahoo.com> HI All, I was wondering if anyone here here has experience with a Diabetic Guinea Pig and/or the use of Glipizide? I recently had to take 3 of my female Guinea Pigs back into rescue that were placed back in 06.The owner although she loved them said something was wrong with the eyes of one of my girls and "couldnt afford a vet bill". I told her if she wasn't going to take her as part of my contract and the proper care of them I was coming to get them, which I did last Monday night.I took the first girl"Ebony" to my vet Tuesday. She has cataracts,is almost fully blind, and is Diabetic. We put her on Glipizide. All 3 of the girls were obese. I took the other 2 girls in on Thursday and Ebony back in to retest her.The other 2 girls had normal Glucose levels at 107 and 111.Ebony is responding to the oral meds and hers was down from 285 to 167,which is great. Can anyone here offer any info or experience with this and this medication.I have read some cases like the one on guinealynx but would love any more info or experience I can find.I know very little about this and this medication, how it works, how long it lasts, etc. Thanks,Beth Owned By: U2 "Dori" (White Chicken) CAG "Oliver" Lovie "Peaches" Tiel "Snow"(Ben's Birdie) Katrina Mutt "Dixie" Schnoodle "Molly-Ryanne" Snowshoe "Mia"(Elisha's Kitty) Guinea Pigs"Ginger&Spice"(Ben's Piggies) Hubby "John" and 2 Wonderful Kids "Elisha"&"Benjamin" Rainbow Bridge: Piggy "Onyx" Aug.29th,2007,the biggest cuddle bug ever,Beloved "Ryan" October 29th 2007 Our Std.Poodle of almost 14 years will be sadly missed forever! With a bit of thought a wire bottomed cage can make an excellent piggy home. It just needs a thick wad of newspaper on the base to protect those little feet. Years ago, someone gave me a large and roomy poultry crate to house piggies on my table when I did the RSPCA Pet days. With several layers of newspaper on the bottom it has been a sturdy Piggyfriend home ever since. Someone dumped a large chinchilla cage at my local amenity tip recently. Laid on its side and with a bit of work with wirecutters to remove what it now the top, it makes a spacious home for Frodo and Shadow. Again, layers of newspapers protect the boys' feet from the wire base. I am, of course, very gratetful to my army of newspaper savers. Penny. Hoping for an early start, they arrived at the ferryport to discover it blocked by hundreds of lorries unable to board the ferries. They found out that there was a national strike in France and the French ports were blockaded so the ferries were not operating. They decided to try the Channel Tunnel instead. Brave piggies - you would not get me into that tunnel - but I suppose that it is second nature to them as they love running through their pipes. The Tunnel is only a very big pipe after all. No doubt I will be receiving a large bill for all those train tickets but the Egg cards saved the day again. They called last night to say that they had finally arrived and have met up with both Fugly and Duke. They asked me to tell Glynis not to worry as they know all about CC and have seen me deal with eyes on many occasions so feel confident that Duke will be OK in their capable paws. They are probably enjoying the paintballing games right now. There is a paintball centre at an adventure park just along the road from "Piggyfriends" and, if the games are a success, they might like to do it all again when they come here for the Pignic and Birthday Celebration. There is a discount for children so I will have to see if this applies to piggies as well. I shall have to warn them that there is also a Birds of Prey Display at the park and they must watch out for all those fierce eagles, owls and suchlike. They are used to my cockatiels but their beaks are not as dangerous as the toughest thing they have to tackle is a grape. They might also enjoy the dry ski slope there. I shall have to see how much activity a group of piggies can fit into one weekend, bearing in mind the need for naps and lots of birthday cake. Sorry to be late with my report but we have had trouble with our server for the last couple of days. I hope that I haven't missed any GPDD posts. Penny and half of the Piggyfriends. The 13 sows left behind are complaining that they want to play paintball too. Not today. I have to go to work. I have a little girl piggie called dimple she is 5 years and 4 months. Im very proud of her age and the fact she has never been ill. I have noticed spots of blood in her cage recently. I dont think its a water infection as she dosnt cry at all. Shes not hunched up. Shes the same as usual eating plenty and happy. Shes not wet round the back or anything. I think it must be something to do with her age. I really dont want to take her to the vet. They wont know what it is so there put her on antibiotics which will upset her and her stomach and she will get stressed. I feel as shes happy it will be kinder to her to let her carry on as she is and what ever will be will be. Ive had lots of pigs and allways taken them to the vets some good results some not. But i feel im making the right choice with her. I hope you understand how i feel and you think im making the right choice. I would like to feel a bit more confident about my decsition. I've offered to take him in as my own pig but the neighbors never took me up on the offer. When I did visit him, I always had kind words and gave him a head rub. Knowing that I rescue, they gave me his leftover bedding, food & hay. Timothy hay, which I'm glad he got in his diet. I threw out the pellets with the "junk". That's fantastic news. I myself can't understand why some people (seems to be lots of people) can't understand that wire on the bottom of a piggy's cage can damage their feet! I went to a cavy show (my first one) a couple of weeks ago, and purchased a small brochure on how to look after piggies, curious if there was any info in there that I didn't already know about. There wasn't. But, even within that brochure the experts (stud owners) are telling people to put wire bottoms on their cages so the piggies can eat through to the grass. Why can't they just say don't put any wire on the bottom, that makes it even easier for piggies to eat the grass! Of course, how can I, a mere pig lover/worshipper, not a cavy stud owner, tell this cavy fancier club that they are wrong with their information!??!! About six months after she was diagnosed, she showed signs of cataracts in both eyes. They grew larger and thicker during the rest of her life (passed away at age 5.5 years). Viola was on glipizide for about 3.5 years. For some reason, during her last year of life, suddenly her BG level was normal. I continued to test her, but she never went above 150! During most of her life, I was happy if I could get it below 200. Her doses were twice a day every day. At one point I tried dividing the dose into three times a day, but it didn't work as well as twice a day. on 5/24/08 6:30 AM, blaaco at yahoo.com at blaaco at yahoo.com wrote: > HI All, > I was wondering if anyone here here has experience > with a Diabetic Guinea Pig and/or the use of > Glipizide? > I recently had to take 3 of my female Guinea Pigs back > into rescue that were placed back in 06.The owner > although she loved them said something was wrong with > the eyes of one of my girls and "couldnt afford a vet > bill". > I told her if she wasn't going to take her as part of > my contract and the proper care of them I was coming > to get them, which I did last Monday night.I took the > first girl"Ebony" to my vet Tuesday. She has > cataracts,is almost fully blind, and is Diabetic. We put > her on Glipizide. All 3 of the girls were obese. > I took the other 2 girls in on Thursday and Ebony back > in to retest her.The other 2 girls had normal Glucose > levels at 107 and 111.Ebony is responding to the oral > meds and hers was down from 285 to 167,which is great. > Can anyone here offer any info or experience with this > and this medication.I have read some cases like the > one on guinealynx but would love any more info or > experience I can find.I know very little about this > and this medication, how it works, how long it > lasts, etc. > Thanks,Beth From ebak at ca.inter.net Sun May 25 23:06:04 2008 From: ebak at ca.inter.net (Evelyn Baker) Date: Sun, 25 May 2008 23:06:04 -0400 Subject: [Gpdd] [Health] Antibiotics and Increased Appetite. We had a great day yesterday playing paintball. There were too many of us to make up a team so we all split up into different teams with other piggies. Most of us got rather messy, especially Igor. Shadow is glad that his coat has not grown back yet or he would be in a similar state. We played lots of games in the evening and had loads of fun. Earlier today, we visited a palace where some old kings and queens of France once lived. It was called Versailles. You would have loved the gardens. There was a lot of grass so we stopped for a snack but a slave rushed over and shouted at us. We couldn't understand what he was saying and wished that we had taken your advice and brought the phrase book with us. The "Sacre Bleu" that you said when we announced that we were going to France has proved to be insufficient for our needs. He seemed to be indicating that we should not be on the grass but what was it for if not for lunch? He frightened us so we ran away and soon found a lovely fountain in which to cool off. This also helped clean off the paintball mess so Igor looks a lot better although his coat is going to take forever to dry out. We should have brought a hair dryer too. We have been travelling around on the Metro. It is good to see slaves travelling through these pipes. When we reached the Eiffel Tower we were amazed at how many steps there are to get to the top. It looks like an electricity pylon and is very high for piggies. Duke decided to have a rest and wait for us at the bottom of the tower and Halloween and Sam joined him. We left them eating ice creams at a cafe near the entrance. When we had gone a little way, we discovered that there is a lift nearly to the top. Phew!! It was very full with tourists, some of whom were speaking English. A lady saw us and screamed "Eeek! Rats!" and ran away. Lots of people followed her and we had the lift to ourselves. We looked for the rats but couldn't see them. They would probably have spoken French so we could not have talked to them anyway. Now we are at the top of the tower. We can see Duke, Halloween and Sam down below and they look so tiny! Fugly is trying to take a photo of the view from the top but it is very windy up here and the tower is swaying about. "Be careful Fugly - don't go too near the edge!" At least the wind is drying Igor's coat. I think that we will all need several ice creams to help us recover when we return to earth. Paris nightlife tonight! I may not email you about that. Love to all the Piggyfriend girls. Next time we have an adventure, they must come too. We will have an all piggy trip not just for boars. We gave him a salad and all he ate were the cataloupepieces because those are the princess favourites... and then he just kept grinning, his chin all greenish. Can you believe it? neglecting all the other veggies because of love??? (yesyes I remember a certain dandelionincident.. i know.. but at least we ate the dandelions) Paris was great! We saw the eiffel tower. Fugly went real close to the edge. he is such a dare devil! We also climbed the sacre coeur. The view was awsome. My friend is wondering whether she should put her gpig through surgery at her age. Also they are on a tight budget and may not be able to afford the surgery (they haven't heard an estimate yet). The x-ray showed no stones, blockages, or masses. I don't think the vet has made a more specific diagnosis yet. I've had guinea pigs for over 10 years, but they've been almost all males. I gave my friend the guinealynx address. Does anyone have any information or advice that might help? Is there any treatment that might be tried other than surgery? This is her story...apologies as it is fairly long. A family who lived not far away from us had bought two guinea pigs for their daughter, both of whom were pregnant...we had all the babies, one of whom was Bess. (The others were Pearl and Adam, sister and brother to Bess, and the other little family were Felicity, Adrian and Maxwell). Bess was a happy little piggy, even though she did have some health problems, she always came bouncing back. The first problem was a bladder stone, which was removed by manipulation rather than surgery, so we then cut back on curly Kale and parsley as these can contribute to stones. Next, Bess developed a cyst on her side which was removed by surgery; luckily this was a benign cyst. After that, Bess needed to be spayed for medical reasons. In March last year, when I got home from work, I found that Bess was having difficulty breathing, so I took her in to the vet as an emergency and Neil saved her life - she had a build up of fluid in her chest which meant she couldn't breathe normally. At this point, she was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy; the vets thought she might only have a week to live, but this was in March 2007, so she had over a year of further good quality, happy life! She was on frusemide three times a day, and one drop of metacam for her teeth, and this kept her condition stable. In November 2007, I was going to give Bess her night-time dose of frusemide and I saw that the toes on her right back foot were sticking out at an odd angle, where they had been perfectly OK earlier in the evening. Back to the vet again first thing in the morning, and it turned out she had broken her toes. What we think happened is that she lifted her cocoon in the air (she would move her cocoon around her cabin, not just leave it in one place) and that it must have come down on her foot breaking the toes. We tried to save the toes, but they did not heal (the blood supply to the foot isn't all that good in guinea pigs) and they had to be amputated. Bess recovered from this well, and after getting over the surgery, she was able to walk about normally and groom herself - you would never know that anything had happened! In February this year, I came home and found that Bess had hurt her eye - it looked as if she had caught some hay in her eye and it had resulted in a corneal abrasion. Down to the emergency vet, who prescribed atropine, viscotears and fucithalmic eye drops every 4 hours (bit not all at the same time). We had several trips to our regular vet, and within a few days the eye had healed so well, you couldn't tell which one had had the problem. In early May, Bess wasn't eating as well as she usually did, so back to the vet again. She used to need her teeth trimmed regularly, but had only needed them done once after she was diagnosed with her heart problem. This time, an abscess had suddenly developed between two of her upper right molars, and was starting to push on the eye making it appear more prominent. Bess had surgery to remove the tooth where the abscess was; there was half an inch of root, and at the top of the tooth you could see that there was some necrosis. Immediately after the surgery, Bess was doing really well; she wasn't eating her normal food, but she was enjoying grass, carrot tops and parsley - a variety of favourites to tempt her appetite. Sadly, after a couple of days, her appetite began to fail, and even with daily visits to the vet for sub-cutaneous fluids, metocloprimide to stimulate the gut and some vitamin B she wasn't her usual self, even though I had been syringe feeding her to supplement her intake. On the Saturday, I took her out in the garden and sat with her as it was a sunny day, and picked her some grass, but she didn't want to eat it. On the Sunday, John the vet suggested that she might enjoy some pineapple juice, and that it might help her appetite and digestion. I offered Bess some science recovery mixed with pineapple juice, and also some pineapple juice on its own, and she enjoyed both of these, but by the late evening I could see that her time had come, and I sat cuddling her and talking to her. I rang the emergency vet to check whether anything could be done, as I didn't want her to have a long journey for no benefit. Matthew the vet said he was happy with what I was doing for her, cuddling her and keeping her warm, but to let them know if she was showing any signs of distress. He said she had done wonderfully well to have lived so long with the dilated cardiomyopathy. Bess was very comfortable, sitting on my lap, talking gently, singing her little pig song, and then I held her up on my shoulder where she also liked to sit. Her passing was so very gentle, she just gradually breathed more and more slowly until she was gone, she was never in any distress. My beautiful, bold, brave little Bess crossed gently over the Rainbow Bridge after a very happy life. My little piggy became known as Brave Bess a couple of years ago. My Mum was suffering from dementia, and thought she had switched the oven out, when in fact she had switched it on, and the things on top had started to burn. I was in bed as I wasn't well, but my little Bess could smell the smoke, and knew that something was wrong, so she raised the alarm by calling to me. It wasn't her normal call for food, she woke me and I could tell there was something wrong by the sound of her voice. As soon as I opened the door to my room I could smell the smoke, and I was able to put things out and open the windows to clear the air. Bess had saved us all by her quick thinking and alerting me to the problem. She was a truly wonderful well-loved little pig. I will reply to everyone who has been kind enough to contact me. My home computer is broken, so it might take me a little while. I also want to thank everyone who emailed me about my little Patchouli who crossed over the Bridge in December, the support means so much to me. Message-ID: Dear fellow Guinea pig lovers, It's already been a one and a half wheek, but she is here: Our newest addition Woopy. She is just ubercute with the big paws (she's almost 6 wheeks old), and big ears in comparison to the rest of her body. She's a very charming creature, and also very loud. Weighing in on only 335 grams, she does make a lot of noise compared to my big girls Guiny (1220 grams) and Dunya (1000 grammes), which I find very entertaining and comforting. Lotje used to be our noisy piggy, as Guiny does not wheek at all (she does have a lot of other noises), and Dunya mainly wheeks when she's picked up or when Guiny wants to get in the house she's in. However Guiny does not react to Dunya's whining and complaining, therefore we suspect Guiny is hearing impaired, not completely deaf, but we're pretty sure doesn't hear everything. for example she will not come to us when we call her (if she does not sees us coming), same goes for rustling plastic bags. I do not have the feeling this hinders her at all in her daily life. Anyone has experience with (nearing) deaf piggies? Anywayz, back to Woopy, the introductions with my other two girls went pretty smoothly. Guiny only chattered once, we kept her separated (by a piece of wire), from Dunya and Woopy (who were getting along just fine). The next day I took away the wire and everything went smoothly from then on. Which kind of surprised me, because I remember Dunya's introduction to Guiny, which involved a lot of chattering and chasing around, and guiny having big tuff of white Dunya hair in her mouth. I hope this harmonious behaviour will continue, even when Woopy will start het piggie puberty. She's eating well, and i really funny to watch. Just a moment ago she was sitting on top of the house wheeking her little longs out. When I clean the cages I put the girls in our kitchen, which is on ground level, so they cannot fall off the stairs. It was so funny to watch little Woopy. When making introductions i put her in a small run on a warm plaid (kitchen floor tiles can be pretty cold) with my girls around her to see how they would react to each other. Later when cleaning the cage I put the in the kitchen again, and put Woopy on the plaid, this time without the run aorund her, so she could run around with the rest. I got her out of the cage in the cavy cozy, tammy send us, and put her on the plaid in the cozy. She would get out walk around on the plaid, then she would get on the kitchen tiles, but apparently they we to cold or scary, and she would start wheeking loudly and run back to the plaid and get into the cozy. This was so funny to watch! Later on I checked on them and woopy was already running around the kitchen, like she never did anything else in her life. She would be chasing either Guiny or Dunya in a piggie train, very fun and cute to watch. I think Dunya likes the company of a new younger guinea pig, who is more active than my 4 year old Guiny is. she also seems to act like a mommy to Woopy. But Guiny also seems a safe haven to hide behind, when she is scared... Almost two weeks ago, his pal, Friday (or Dr. Friday) informed us that the abscess might be back. Sure enough, it was, and had to be lanced again. My vet sent off for a culture, and unfortunately we learned that he has MRSA. That upset me very much. Although we already were washing our hands after holding him, etc., we now are taking more precautions (I wear a mask and gloves when cleaning his cage, for example). Fortunately, though, Baytril is effective against MRSA, and my vet had already put Tumbleweed back on Baytril before the culture results came back. Now, though, despite eating and eating, Tumbleweed has lost four ounces in two days! I was shocked when I weighed him today and he was only one pound, twelve ounces. I couldn't believe the scale was correct. We've been giving acidophilus a couple of hours before the Baytril and also giving Reglan as needed. He doesn't seem to be in discomfort and until today was actually running to his water bottle instead of just sauntering. I thought for sure his weight would be up instead of down. Can antibiotics cause a piggie to lose weight even if the piggie is feeling better and eating well? Any thoughts, info, advice, etc. would be much appreciated. More likely, the abscess might be making it a bit more uncomfortable to eat. Try syringing several times a day as he might be trying to eat, but not getting quite enough food. He is fighting an infection, so that takes quite a bit of nutrition. I also hand fed pellets to Glorie after her abscess. Just take a pellet and bypass the incisors and push to the back of the mouth or they just spit it out. Luckily, she didn't lose any hair, but has a huge self-inflicted sore where she was scratching. We hope the dress will cover it. That is because the animal uses his resources to fight the infection and burns more calories than normal when doing so. I sincerely hope the Baytril works. This recent article from Antech states that chloramphenicol is about ~95% effective. The fluoroquinolones (Baytril is one) are only 25% effective. http://www.antechdiagnostics.com/clients/antechNews/2008/apr08_01.htm I would also give him some immune support and if you can afford to do so, I would take him to an alternative veterinary practitioner. I did that with two of my rabbits and a guinea pig and it was very helpful. We used herbs and veterinary acupuncture. Judi L. Hamilton here. I have been feeding Kleenmama's timothy pellets and hay to Alex over the past year, but some rats broke into the pellets and I had to throw the rest out. So it's time to reorder pellets. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations regarding Kleenmama's timothy vs. alfalfa pellets, and Kleenmama vs. Oxbow in general? I was also going to order Oxbow's Vitamin C tablets, does anyone have any feedback on those? Thank you. It sounds as though Alex P. Hamilton is too old to be eating alfalfa so I'd stick with the timothy. My Lady Bug is fed exclusively on KM both pellets and hay. She never did like Oxbows timothy anything. She also did not like the vitamin c that Oxbow puts out but many piggys do. If I were you I'd go ahead and order a small quantity of the Oxbow C and stick with the KM's for everything else. Is your vet just lancing it? Unfortunately, abscesses become encapsulated and the capsule needs to be removed (all of it or as much as possible) or it will just keep coming back. She needs to check into antibiotics that can penetrate tissue (like chloramphenicol or metronidizole), but I don't know which ones are effective against MRSA. I'm glad Doctor Friday keeps up with the little patient, and we'll keep Tumbleweed in our thoughts and prayers. -Stacy and the Squee Squad From leah.mcneil at wachovia.com Fri May 30 11:03:41 2008 From: leah.mcneil at wachovia.com (leah.mcneil at wachovia.com) Date: Fri, 30 May 2008 11:03:41 -0400 Subject: [Gpdd] Announce: Princess Snowflake's blog entry for Wed, May 28, 2008 Message-ID: Hello Piggies & Slaves! As you might remember, the girls had a proper, relaxing bridal shower at the Naples Ritz Carlton spa in SW Florida. Penny didn't want anything to do with the bachelorette party, so Lucy & Mina helped organize that. They had told me that they were going to Epcot. They told me "mom, how much trouble can we get into at a Disney property?" Well, I have a feeling those girls didn't go to Disney. I checked my cell phone bill and I have a call from area code 305. Orlando's area code is 407, so those girls weren't at Disney. My guess is that after they went to the spa, the party went to SOUTH BEACH, in Miami. They are South American, after all, and Miami is a very cosmopolitan city. Does anyone else have news of the wheekend? I have 5 pigs and 1 foster and had 3 additional pigs in the past. I feed them: Oxbow Cavy Cuisine pellets, Kleenmama's Timothy hay, and Oxbow's Vitamin C tablets and they all eat everything quite well! I heard that Kleenmama's timothy pellets are also good, but haven't tried them yet. Oxbow recently reformulated the Vitamin C tablets and my pigs like it much better. I get the second cutting. The 1st cutting is too coarse and the 3rd cutting is too fine. I buy Oxbow's Cavy Cuisine from "Bunny Bytes" in Washington State. I get the smaller bags and keep both the opened and unopened bags in the freezer to protect the Vit. C. I keep a small amount in a Tupperware container for everyday use. It has a tight lid. Both of these places are in Washington State and I live in Oregon. The shipping costs are pretty good. My gp's also love the Oxbow Vit. C. tablets. They have an apple smell. I give it every other day. My Vet said that bladderstone pigs should not have a lot of Vit. C. Of course, they also get fruits and veggies, but since they're on a "Bladderstone" diet, there are many fruits and veggis they can't have...and some of these are high in Vit. C......bummer! Janelle
