As you may know, we have helpers here from all over the world, and I try to educate them as much as I can about piggies - I kind of see it as one of my roles in life! Now I always tell them one must not give piggies wet veggies. I am pretty sure I read on here once that one must not feed wet veggies to guinea pigs. If one washes the veggies before serving them, one has to dry them off first. Now, have I mis-remembered this, or is it true, and if it is true, what is the reason?? I tell helpers they mustn't feed wet veggies to the Dolly Mixtures, and often they ask why, and I just have to shrug and admit I can't remember. And the other question - a few months ago, I heard on the radio news on the way to work that scientists had made a breakthrough in breeding the first ever mouse that could catch the common cold. They made a really big thing of the fact that there had previously been no laboratory animal that could catch the common cold, and now that they had bred one, there would be a lot more research done and perhaps a cure would at last be found. I had to check whether it was 1st April, but it wasn't! I am sure it's common knowledge in the piggie community that our masters can catch colds from their slaves. I always avoid handling any of mine if I have so much as a sniffle for that very reason. But could this just be a myth? Or do piggies develop URI's from contamination from our cold germs which are not exactly like human colds? What you might be thinking is that when you bring the vegs home you wash them throughly then dry them for storage so they won't go bad as quickly, but when actually feeding they should be wet for additional water. This is the only way Lady Bug has been getting water for almost three years. She refuses to drink water at all. I'm no scientist so can't give you specific data but humans can pass bacteria and some viruses to animals but I'm not sure the uri our piggys get is the same as a cold in a human. Some germs can be passed both ways. I did a quick search in Pubmed (medical database; i'm a information specialist/librarian nowadays) I combined the official search term for the common cold and limited it to animal research. Next i further specified that search by adding the offical search term for guinea pigs. That got me 12 articles that did common cold research on guinea pigs (mostly vitamin C related). So, obviously, they know about guinea pigs being able to catch a cold. Then I did the same, but replaced the guinea pigs term for the mice term. That got me 21 articles. So... the problem is, that i do not have the medical background to fully interpret all the articles (that common cold stuff is pretty complicated..pfff). Nor do I have full access to the articles. What I do understand is that there are several strains of viruses ..eh.. *thinkthink* .. So I did a websearch on your news and found this: http://biotech.about.com/b/2008/02/06/gm-mice-aid-common-cold-research.htm ... So this confirms the news, AND they actually got it published in a legit journal (It has a doi, I dont have full access at home, but I think they got it published in nature. which is an important scientific journal) As I understand it, colds can be caused by several strains of viruses. A common one for primates is the rhinovirus and this one cannot cause a cold for most non-primates. But there are others out there.. (and I cannot find what they mean with most non-primates.. are our piggies the exception?) Dont pin me down on this, but these are my 2 cents.. I don't know if you have heard but the younger boys were nearly set upon by these weird people yelling out 'rats' i have no idea why they said that, i didn't see any rats i wouldn't want to see any as they've got very very big toofies eeeeek Anyway they all climbed to the top and i was busy taking pigtures when the next thing i saw was PigAir fly over and out jumped Captn. Jack oooooo he is one very clever piggie you should've seen the way he glided in and then they helped him on to the tower and then he and Manny repelled down the side i've got a great video of them i'll show it to the girls at the wedding. The Dolly Mixtures we so kind and had the most magnificent food there was loads of it, of all kinds i'm not sure how their slave managed it but she had food from all over the world!!!! She was lovely we all got cuddles and lap time with her and lots of strokes so we'd not miss our slaves, thanks xxxxxxxxxxxxx and granny i didn't disgrace myself on her lap either. I decided to stay on with Fugly and the PiggyFriends and the Piggy Porcelains they're all showing me around the UK, it is a lovely place but they said it was nearly summer but granny all it's doing is raining.... i'm trying to work out how to send some of it down to you as i know we need it for my grass. I'm not going thru that tunnel thing tho i didn't like the idea of not being able to eat for that long.. so PigAir organising a special flight for a few of us to zip us back to the US in time for the wedding. I'm going to go see Lady Bug and Joan and pick her up, i have saved the special roses (shhhhh don't say which ones granny) just for her, mind you i had to hide them as a few of the boys were excited one night after some drinking and decided to play games on us all and go thru our luggage and mix it all up... my towels ended up in Teddy's bag and he thought that was really funny as he was trying to work out what to do with them, i showed him the trick of how to grab a towel and drag it under a pigloo so it kept you warm LOL I better go now granny, please don't worry i'm being looked after really really well by all my special friends and their lovely slaves. I wish one day that you too could come and meet them as they too have soft hands and whisper in my ear and kiss my ears too not quite like you but it's still nice. Please know that you did all you could for Will, as did your wonderful petsitter. Teeth problems can be so difficult to treat, and our hearts go out to you. You did the right thing in helping him to the Bridge when he no longer felt like moving or eating his Critical Care. Friends of my daughter's rescued 4 baby wild rabbits (read: prevented dog from killing them after it already killed mother rabbit and 1 baby) and my daughter now has those 4 remaining babies. They have fur & teeth (are they born with fur? I thought not??) and are about the size of a small 2 or 3 week old baby GP? Question -- how to help these babies survive? Daughter has bought some kind of special milk product, even kitten size nurser bottles are too large so she's using an eye dropper and trying to cut up veggies in tiny pieces, I.e. slivers. I've thought about soaking pellets and offering them. She also has clover in with them. All help and advice welcome. These helpless little animals are so adorable and so fragile. Their ears are unbelievably tiny. They are so vulnerable. My daughter says they are livlier todya than last pm so maybe something is going right. I am sorry if I have missed any recent correspondence on this, but I would recommend going ahead with the surgery. If your piggy is passing blood, there is a problem somewhere which is not likely to get better by itself. It could be ovarian cysts, or it could be a pyometrium (like an abscess in the uterus). I have had mature lady piggies spayed for just such reasons and they have come out very well (one was 6 years old, and lived another 18 months). What I would recommend is asking the vet to use a gaseous anaesthetic (isoflurane is good) and *not* injectable anaesthetics (the problem here is that these linger in the body, whereas the gas is breathed out and it's gone). Important things to watch are that your piggy eats well after surgery and passes faecal pellets; any problems here could indicate GI stasis, which means the gut needs to be stimulated (sometimes metocloprimide is used) and something like fibreplex or yogurt to repopulate the gut with healthy bacteria.
