I see that I messed up my title line on GPDD and put Calico in the title line instead of Snickers. I guess that shows how upset I was. It is usually Calico going in for surgery or treatment instead of Snickers. Snickers is home and his surgery went well. The doctor said that the tumor came out nice and easy - he said it was encapsulated and just lifted right out. I am now watching him closely to make sure he is eating and drinking. He seems to be moving around and is VERY glad to be home. The doctor said that he used glue to hold the incision together so he would not chew the stitches! That was a new one on me! Just as long as it works and he heals up nicely, I won't complain. I am so glad he is home, and I hope he starts eating and drinking very soon. Thanks again to all of you for your kind e-mails, cards, and prayers. I named her Brown Noise as she was very gassy, so I learned a thing I would pass to you. We kept her off all veggies for 2 wheeks to minimize gas, and she was on Raglan, I don't remember if she was glued or stitched but my surgeon in Beaverton in a magician as a surgeon, all went well for 2 wheeks, then I put her back with her cagemates and so she started having gas which bloated her a bit. She chewed right through the stitches or glue as the gas is what made it itch and she ate right through her bowel. I loved her so dearly my magician did a bowel resection but is was too late, I live an hour from him. So my message is to be very certain to keep the veggies away for a while to surgical piggies and the gassy ones for a long while, and modify this according to Snickers digestion. Remember you may have to give Vit C Tabs if they were getting allot of Vit C from them. My basic piggie surgery message to you all that a true surgical recovery for a pig takes at least two months and I know this very well. I loved that girl pig with every fiber of my body and sole, she was a rescue from the humane society and she had a great few years with me and all the other girl pigs adored her too She was a fine Penny Giggle Sandy, Manny on holiday with the lovely Peaches and Cream and chaperone and adventurer Captain Jack, who is growing up allot . Your writings compelled me to share two poems that I wrote after I lost many of my fur babies in the summer of 06 due to vitamin C deficiency. I can only send one poem at a time or it will not get through. The first one"a hole in my soul" is about the giant impact they have on us and how the pain may go away but we never forget. (I do not believe that we gain little from them. I was not in a good state of mind at the time.) A Hole In My Soul By Sarah Kaplan I squeeze my eyes shut to keep the tears >From falling down my face My soul is low My sorrows fill me My shoulders buck, my chest swells I cry out in sorrow and pain I cry and cry, my heart aching My shoulders shaking The tears have ceased The sobs have silenced The pain remains, making an Aching hole in my soul Over time the pain does fade But the aching hole stays forever It reminds me always Of what I've lost Sometimes the pain is so faded It seems not to even exist But sometimes it's so strong it's a punch in the stomach I gasp, I remember So much lost So little gained Lives cut short Friend forever lost Life continues, things change Good thing happen, the bad fades But some pains go too deep Some pains make too big a hole From kaplans at peoplepc.com Thu Jul 3 21:36:10 2008 From: kaplans at peoplepc.com (kaplans at peoplepc.com) Date: Thu, 3 Jul 2008 18:36:10 -0700 Subject: [Gpdd] [RAINBOW BRIDGE] Trixi/ poems Message-ID: <001c01c8dd76$57cdbe80$3043ff04@stephensucks> This is the second poem. "LOVE" is about the love we receive from our fur babies and how it survives even through death. LOVE By Sarah Kaplan The death of a cherished pet A sadness indescribable The knowledge that until the end of your days Not to see their loving faces, hear their loving voices To feel their soft fur See their little quirks To be loved by that animal To be loved no matter what An animal that has been with you Through good times and bad That you have told you deepest darkest secrets Revealed your whole heart to As you put their bodies in the hard, cold ground In your heart you mourn, but there is also hope You will be reunited again He is waiting for you May you always remember And keep a special place in your heart Love and love others Mourn but not forever Remember your pet and the love that he gave you The love that you still feel Remember your pet loves you still And wants you to be happy Go through your life happy With your heart open to others As your pet looks down on you With the love only an animal can give My truest sympathy to all who have lost a fur baby. They always change our lives forever. I hope that these poems have brought anyone mourning a fur baby hope. I am sorry if they make you cry. Snickers still has quite a lump on his head from swelling and skin stretching (from the tumor), but he seems to be healing nicely. He was so thrilled at getting back in his own quarters with lots of hay and the company of his friends near by. It seemed to make such a difference in his eating and his mood. I kept him on towels for the first two days, and I guess he just wasn't used to them. He seemed to wonder where he was, and he seemed a little depressed. Maybe he was just feeling bad, but he still seemed unhappy with the changes. Today, I put his litter back in and gave him even more hay. He was thrilled to be "back to normal" as far as his environment goes. It seemed to perk him up a lot. He even stood up to the side of the cage for some extra petting! What a little character! He appeared to be doing very well with his new family. I visited him there a few weeks ago -- he seemed happy and healthy, and was "rooming" with a very nice cagemate named Bonkers. He was getting love and attention. But his health began to decline precipitously one weekend when their vet was not available -- and soon he was gone. Fortunately, I got to see him twice in his new home before he went to the rainbow bridge. I am second guessing myself a lot -- should I have kept him? Would I have noticed before his new family did that he was not doing well? But I know if he had stayed with me he would have spent almost every moment of his day all alone. And I know that his new family loved him. It is just hard to know he is not in the world anymore. I am going to visit his adoptive family today or tomorrow to take some of his ashes home with me to bury with Nani Alice and to bring some goodies for their three piggies. They (especially my friend's daughter) were devastated by his loss, and I feel bad that they did not have him for long (maybe about 2 months)... He was only a little over three years old to my knowledge (maybe older, depending on how long he lived at the pet store -- I "rescued" him when he was already full grown and the pet store was trying to get rid of him). With a sad heart I also say farewell to all of you. Because I am allergic to guinea pigs, Babu is my last one. I may "pigsit" for a few days at a time for the family that adopted Babu, but I will never again have my very own piggies since it was very hard on my respiratory system. I have loved reading the posts on this list, even though I didn't reply to the group as a whole all that often. I love the support you give one another, the humor, the caring for piggies, the creativity, the photographs, the virtual events, the respect for these wonderful creatures. I'll stay on the list until I leave for Scotland on Wednesday. I will miss you. On Wednesday night she was happily clearing up the last of the veggies but on Thursday morning, she was in distress. She would not eat and seemed in discomfort so I rushed her to our Rodentologists. It seemed at first as though she had some kind of kidney problem. They gave her fluids and pain meds and said that she should stay with them. Much as I hated to leave her there, I knew that she would be in the most capable hands. I hoped for a miracle but I had used up my quota nursing Cadbury back to health following a severe respiratory illness and early the next morning I had a call from Cavies' Castle with the worst possible news. Mayflower had passed away during the night. Our wonderful Rodentologists had stayed up all night with her and tried everything possible but to no avail. Some kind of blockage had proved impervious to all their medication and expertise. I went to collect her later that day. They told me about what they call a design fault in piggies, whereby a sudden movement can cause gastric torsion. They have seen it happen in young piggies when popcorning and once lost one of their own herd in just such a way. I was upset not to have been with Mayflower when she left for the bridge but am comforted that she was with people she knew and loved and who cared for her as if she were their own. Many of you will know Mayflower's story as she was one of the April piggies on the GPDD calendar, so I won't tell it all again. She came here in 2003, in utero with her mother Ginger and her two baby girls, who had been born in a garden in the cold of an English winter and had somehow survived. Ginger, a first time mother at the age of five, was pregnant again with Mayflower and her sister Gingerbread and when they were born, I thought that I would lose them as they were such tiny, wobbly runts and poor Ginger had no milk. They beat the odds and grew into plump, happy piggies. Mayflower was born with one eye closed but this opened spontaneously after a week. All of the "Ginger Girls" have been great ambassadors for piggykind as any visitor wanting to "pick up a piggy" has been offered one of them to hold ( under supervision ). All five of them are/were easy going piggies, eager for a cuddle and never wriggly. The "Ginger Girls" have occupied a large corner pen at Piggyfriends for the last five years, the remaining three celebrating Mayflower and Gingerbread's fifth birthdays on May 1st. It is hard to believe that Mayflower has gone. I am so used to nursing piggies through illnesses that when one leaves so suddenly and unexpectedly it is much more of a shock. Now there are only two Ginger Girls left, Gingerbread and her older sister, Diamond. When I went to fetch Mayflower home, two boars were at Cavies' Castle waiting for a home. They had been taken there to be boarded when their slave was rushed to hospital but sadly, she is now in a hospice and these piggies need a new home. If they had been sows, I'm sure that they would have come home with me to share the "Ginger" pen but I haven't room for any more boars right now. I have buried Mayflower in the herb garden, where I had just cleared last year's parsley crop and will make a sign to put over her as I have done for all the Piggyfriends past and our flag is at half mast. I tried to post this on Thursday but read Sarah's emotive poems and couldn't finish it. Thank you for sharing them with us Sarah. I have saved them to read again when it doesn't hurt so much. Thanks also to Janneke, whose funny story about Suus and Dunya cheered us all immensely. It reminded us of the fun we had writing the PigOlympig stories, in which Mayflower and Gingerbread, together with Daisy, accompanied Jan the Boar. I knew that this could be a difficult year as many of the Piggyfriends are over 5 now. I'm just grateful that Mayflower had the chance of a long and happy life here with her family. We didn't get to see behind the scenes tho because each time we tried, aol did one of its famous sudden "quits." But we still had the main tour. This is truly a delightful website. Such creatvity. We may end up being (or having) an author's forum here!! Hopefully on Monday I'll have my copy of Marion Bellarobi's GP book. I'm really looking forward to it. I'll post the information on it the first of the week. There's really so much talent and originality here. Truly enjoying this, Alge <---- who will have to await Captain Jack's arrival here before I can share with him. I expect to see him come swaggering in any day now probably with some cutlass he's picked up on his travels. I think I've told you that he aquired an eye patch somewhere and is apparently wearing it for effect. This whole Pirate thing. In one of his emails he said that he found Jolly Rodger flags (I think he purchased one) but that he thought there should be a Jolly Rodent Flag out there somewhere, too. I am so very sorry that Babu Franklin has gone to join Nani Alice at the Rainbow Bridge. I know how hard you tried to find him a perfect new home, so you must not second guess yourself as to whether you did the right thing. He would not have been happy left by himself all day. Piggies need company, either of their own kind or ours. His adoptive family must be very upset at what has happened. I seldom have any further contact with people that bring piggies here to Piggyfriends but on the rare occasions when their previous owners have wished to visit, I have always felt terribly guilty when that particular piggy has passed on. I am sure that they will be comforted by the fact that you wish to pigsit for them in the future. It is so sad that your allergies have prevented you from having more piggies in your life but you have precious memories on which to look back. Despite your sadness at this time, I hope that you will enjoy your trip to Scotland. My parents spent several holidays there and the scenery is beautiful. Goodbye Ruth and best wishes for the future. I was being lazy and forgot to read them so I searched through them really fast and found yours! I agree it is really terrible! I have seen one about a cavy swimming because I didn't know what it was until I clicked and saw and OH it was terrible! I mean swimming is OK if your cavy knows how, and if the cavy is not forced or scared, I saw it on Peter Gurneys website it is used to get the cavy back in shape after it is sick on special occasions. But that is force! Those people do not care about the cavy at all! My friend that I was talking to on their for a little while posted a video like that and I was horrified! I think that she was just bored and that her friend was over! Im thankful that I didn't see one about a piggy being eaten by a snake! I'm sorry you had to see that! I have heard stories of people that feed puppies (baby cavies that is) to snakes because it is a treat! D= People are so stupid sometimes! How dare they think that torturing an animal is funny! It is a helpless small animal that can't do anything about it! That animal has a will and a want to live and they just take that away! If I had more time and money I would rescue all of the piggies and help them! :( I am just happy there are some sane people in the world gpdd! It makes me feel so much better knowing that it is only a small percentage of animals that are abused and they rest are reasonably cared for. For cavies that may be the other way around! :( But we can stop it guys! It sounds as though she put up a brave fight throughout her long life, and it is a tribute to the dedicated care you gave her that she survived to such a ripe old age for a piggie. We are certain she will have known how dearly she was loved. Slave Debbie has vowed to adopt no more piggies after the last of us Dolly Mixtures has departed - for us, it is the lack of adequate vet care here in France that is the major deterrent. But we have just adopted a new little chap, Soturi, because we had a lone piggie needing a friend (more on that elsewhere when time can be found), so the pigless era is being pushed further and further away. The piggies can't imagine how Debbie Slave would cope without the piggies to cuddle and sing to, and Debbie Slave doesn't know how long she could stick out the silence which is left when the piggie wheeks and burbles are removed ... time will tell. But we do feel every sympathy for you have piglessness enforced upon you after 14 years, and, from a household which includes cats, dogs, chickens, geese, goats and even a duck, we can fully concord with you that very much only a pig is a pig! Maybe your parents will miss the wheeks and squiggles more than they anticipate and come round. If not, you'll just have to wait until you have a place of your own where they can no longer dictate. In any event, we are thinking of you at this very sad time, and wishing you well from across the ocean. I think my two guinea pigs are getting bored. They are 5 and a half years old. They are in at night (in a 3 foot x 4 foot run in my bedroom), and in the day are in the garden in an even bigger run. If it's raining in the day (which it is doing a LOT here in the UK at present), then they have heaps of floor time in my bedroom instead, as I am home during the day. I spend time with them talking and making a fuss of them. I love them dearly. They have boxes to sleep in within their run (they sleep on Vet Bed), and tunnels to run through. They've wood to knore on and they of course have each other for company. But I feel it's the same old 'same old'. In the early days, they played a lot together, chasing each other around on the floor and pop-corning, but they don't really do this anymore. I know they are older pigs now, but I feel they are telling me there is something missing. If anyone has some good ideas for brightening up a guinea pigs' day and helping to make their floor time more interesting, I would love to hear your ideas. It is scary how quickly piggies can go downhill, and we know you did the best thing when you got her to Cavies Castle, as Debbie Slave did that when our Red Dandy was very poorly. She also left him there, and he crossed to The Bridge in their loving care, along with one of their own piggies, Jasper, in 2005. We were interested to hear about the theory of sudden onset gastric torsion. Our precious Scruff had similar symptoms just before she went to The Bridge in 2004. Mayflower and the Ginger Family sound like a wonderful band of piggies, splendid ambassadors for their race, and we are sure the surviving pair, Gingerbread and Diamond, will miss Mayflower terribly, as of course you all will. But you know that Mayflower had the best life she possibly could have had because she was a member of the Piggyfriend family, and her great age, and that of so many of you, is a tribute to the standard of love and care all your family receive, ably aided and abetted, of course, by your excellent rodentologists at Cavies Castle. As you say, our little furbies are never with us for long enough, and we know only too well the pain you are feeling and the emptiness that will be jumping out at you each time you approach the large corner pen with only two piggies in it.May it bring you a tiny grain of comfort to know that piggies and slaves all over the world are thinking of you at this difficult time, and wishing you well. Run free, marvellous Mayflower, with your mummy and Peridot, and thank you for the love and happiness you gave whilst you were amongst us. We are sure his health decline would have been nothing to do with his having moved home, and that he would have preferred to be with new cagemate Bonkers rather than all alone at yours. And you know, even if you had still had him and noticed a decline in his health earlier, very often there is nothing a vet can do, and perhaps he was spared a lot of frightening intervention. If he was loved as much as you say by his new family, he will certainly have felt that, and probably he realised you had had to let him go for his own good, so that he would not be lonely. He will have been so grateful to you for rescuing from the pet store, and at least got to know the love of two different families in his comparatively short little life. It is so sad that you, like Francine, are having to leave the wonderful gpdd community and piggie slavedom. We know all we oldtimers will miss you. We hope you enjoy Scotland - Debbie Slave lived for 9 years on the Northeast Coast of Scotland, right on the mouth of the River Spey, although she never had guinea pigs then, nor indeed did she see a single piggie whilst she was there. But she loved it dearly and misses the breathtaking scenery. Hopefully it will help you to heal. Take care, dear Ruth - you don't have to leave our community just because you are pigless, you know, although Debbie Slave did leave all her bunny forums when her last bunny moved to a new home in the UK so she could get better vet care - it was too painful to be reminded of the joy she was missing and read of all the anguish slaves were suffering through ill or departing bunnies. So we do understand. Run free and popcorn, Babu Franklin - and Ruth also. You will both be missed. You should call a vet that specializes in exotic or pocket pets because they may able to give you some advice or medicine should she need it. First of all, you shouldn't be feeding her Diorites or popcorn. They aren't good for her. Guinea pigs should be getting fresh vegetables like romaine lettuce, celery, small amounts of carrots, and other fresh foods. They also require lots of vitamin C which they can get from fruits and vegetables. If she isn't drinking, try giving her some cucumber or watermelon. It has lost of water in it. Fruits have lots of sugar so she should get too much of them. Is she eating her pellets? Does she have timothy hay? Is she active or sitting in a corner. I have a friend who works part-time in Amarillo as a nurse. She called me Saturday to ask me if I wanted to adopt a new furbaby. A family in Amarillo had taken a guinea pig and a schnauzer to the vet clinic and dropped them off. I know of no guinea pig rescue anywhere close, but I'm sure the dog went to the adoption center in Amarillo. My friend told me that they had no idea what to do with the piggy, so they were going to take it to the pet store to be fed to a snake! Can you believe that? This guinea pig is about 3 years old. What a horrible, horrible death! Brandi told me she would be glad to bring the pig to me on Sunday. I would certainly have taken the baby no matter the reason, but how could they feed a 3-year old guinea pig to a snake? After finding that out, I would have driven to pick it up ($50 worth of gas, but that's okay). Well, Brandi remembered she was supposed to pick up the guinea pig after she was already half way home (it's a 2-hour drive), but she called them and they are going to get it to me this Saturday. The vet clinic will care for him/her until then. I don't know if the piggy is a boy or a girl, what color or breed it is, or anything. Don't care! Bubba, KissaBella, and I will welcome him/her no matter what. At least now the vet clinic knows that someone will take any stray guinea pigs. We're very excited. I would also like to take this time to thank everyone for all the nice, sweet thoughts after our loss. I know that I can always depend on all you "crazy guinea pig lovin' people." You mean the world to me. For one things, guinea pigs are not little toys or baby dolls, nor are they like dogs and cats that you can share you human treats with. ANd you can't just pop him in for a bath because it seems like a good idea as you can a doll. It's good that you've come here where you can learn about proper piggy care. I hope you can get your mother interested in reading as well. Did you dry your piggy after its bath? Was it inside or outside? Did you first ask your mother's opinion or advice (which is why its important for her to know how to care for these delightful but delicate and wholly dependent little furry friends) before bathing him or her? Why do you think the piggy is sick? Is is his breathing labored -- that is, does he seem to be having trouble breathing. Are his eyes watering? Sometimes piggies "purr" when they're content. Truly, young guinea pig owners need for their parents to be knowledgeable and involved tho you need to keep up with things like being sure he always has food and water and that he gets vegetables and some fruits that are high in vitamin C. Perhaps you can talk your mother into an early birthday present and let that be a trip to the vet if it's needed. We don't get animals only to watch them slowly die because of our mistakes. ALso, you and your mother both need to know that a pet such as this requires the involvement of your mother. I hope he is well. How old is he an how long have you had him? Please, give him only foods that are appropriate for a guinea pig -- no Doritos, no popcorn, no potato chips -- just his pellets and the proper veggies and fruits, and of course be certain that he always has pellets and absolutely alway water! And don't leave him outside if it hot and sunshiney and no shade. They can die of heat stroke. Others will also advise you here as well. Of my over 5s, Sam still has the occasional popcorn but enjoys paper tearing in his spare time. He has always loved to make paper shapes out of his newspaper. Pansy, nearly 6, does this too but makes confetti and also enjoys making holes in cardboard boxes, which her friends then climb through. Diamond, who is mourning the loss of her sister, Mayflower, usually does pirouettes for cucumber slices but sister Gingerbread prefers to watch. Six year old Satin, when not eating, is sleeping off the last meal and dreaming about the next one. They all enjoy their tunnels and would be having a run outside were it not for the awful weather, on which you commented. If anyone comes up with ideas for piggy entertainment, the Piggyfriends are up for anything. Wouldn't it be fun if they really could go camping? Love to BG and Artie, Penny and the Piggyfriends. We came back from a weeks vacation and she was pretty sick. (We have a pet sitter who usually does a great job - but something must have gone wrong). I immediately took her to the emergency vet. They gave her fluids, a pain shot and vitamin C. She is on several meds and I'm attempting tu supplement with Critical Care. I've had guinea pigs for almost 15 years - but I've never had problems trying to feed with a syringe like this. For some reason this one is really stumping me. I know the only way she's probably going to get better is to get her to eat and to get her digestive system moving. Any tips would really be great. Here's what I'm dealing with. - I can't get it to a good consistency when I mix it. To get it to work I have to make it almost runny. - I try to put her in a "burrito" - wrapping the blanket around her - but she still spits up most of the food. - The syringe I have is large, and I have cut off the tip to make it take the food better - but then it's not long enough for me to get it back to her molars where she may possibly chew the food rather than spitting it up. I'm really worried that we won't be able to save her. My husband is taking her to our regular vet today for a re-check - but I need any other advice you all can give. Thanks so much! I'm sure that many slaves are going to suggest that you try to give your piggie something tasty like pumpkin to get her interested, but I would like to suggest possibly using a smaller syringe. When I would syringe previous piggies using the larger syringes, it was way more difficult, especially if the piggie is not cooperating. The syringe that I use now (to syringe the Princess her Vit C) is the 1cc syringe. It's small and the tip is the purrrfect size for those cute, little piggie lips. If you don't have any on hand, then your Vet should have some, and they most likely wouldn't charge you for them, because they are dirt cheap. If you want to buy some for the future, here's the place I get mine: http://www.calvetsupply.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=380 I just put in an order myself, cuz I think I only have like 6 or 7 left. My boy has been syringe fed now for 2 years almost so i know how difficult it can be ... I'm not sure what size syringes you can access i have a slightly larger one but it has a smaller spout that can reach the back of the mouth. I also scoop up whatever the piggie spits out and re pop back into mouth till i've finished the bowl of food, it takes time but it's worth it. I mix the CC with the pre boiled hot water but also add baby pureed apples (for baby-3 months) this makes a good consistency for syringing. I only syringe in a small amount at a time. You could also give your piggie a little rest with perhaps offering a leafie veg in between every few mouth fuls so your little girl feels it's a nice time to be syringe fed. I also syringe a little water every now and then thru the feed so that it helps wash down the CC. We wish you all the very very best in your quest with your darling little girl, huge wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeks and loves from us both. Oh just thought i make sure the CC and the baby apple are warm not too hot but that seemed to help too. The two piggies got along fine whilst they were in their outdoor run all summer, but when I moved them indoors for the winter, little Scoot started bullying Zebra, to the extent that eventually Zebra took up residence on top of his house and refused to come down to eat, drink or piddle/poop. So the two were separated, and spent the winter in adjacent cages, where they chatted with each other through the bars and also with Fidget and Scrabble. As you may remember, dearest Fidget went to The Bridge in the spring, leaving me with 3 lone boars, all of whom spent a lot of time chatting at the bar. So when I moved them outdoors (when summer eventually arrived, and their runs had all been moved to fresh pastures), I risked putting Zebra and Scrabble in together, and that seemed to work well - Scrabble is a big old softie, and Zebra, who, you may recall, was a juvenile delinquent in his youth, has calmed down a lot in his middle age. But that left me with a lone Scoot, and as you know, I hate them to be alone, especially in summer, as when they are shut in for the night they can no longer even see one another. I refuse point blank to buy a guinea pig, as no way is a cent of my hard-earned cash going to anyone who breeds animals for profit. So I posted an appeal for an "accidental" arrival offered free to a good home, and it turned out the lady who replied had had a population explosion whilst she was recovering from a stroke in hospital (her partner had confused the sexes - oops!), so I was able to go to her home and choose one. It turned out I had met this lady 3 years previously, when she had helped me rehome an injured dog I had found at the side of the road, and an added bonus was that, when we arrived in her living room, she had a newborn baby alpaca lying there on a duvet, which I was allowed to cuddle .... I am so glad they are even harder to keep than piggies, or I would have been sorely tempted - although Ronnie is not for sale, he will add to her herd, who are bred for their fleeces and have a wonderful life! Anyway, I eventually chose a fluffy little tricolour Abyssinian (is that what one calls those who have long hair flying out in all directions?), who turned out to have several scabs from scuffles with the 2 boys he shared his run with. I set up a run in unfamiliar territory and put Scoot and the new chap in simultaneously, but athough the new chap was initially very friendly, Scoot was really nasty, not just mounting but chasing, shoving and possibly biting - after a couple of carefully supervised hours, I had to separate them. By this time I felt a good name for the newcomer would be warrior, because he seemed to be in a wars a lot, so I asked our Finnish helper what that would be in Finnish - hence Soturi got hos name. Of course, by this time I was already in love with him, and no way could he be returned. It was either try him with someone else or go back and get another! I decided to risk putting Scoot in with sweet-natured Scrabble and Soturi in with Zebra. I had never wanted Scoot with Scrabble because of the age difference - Scrabble is a 5 year old SCAMP, and I think has bumblefoot, whereas Scoot has just reached a year. But they seemed to take to one another straight away - of course, they had lived within sight and smell of each other ever since Scoot arrived here. Soturi has been wary of Zebra after his reception from Scoot, and Zebra has been curious but not aggressive. I had to leave them the day after I put them together, to come to the UK for my sister's 50th birthday (we celebrated by building a huge sandcastle on a nearby beach!), but have kept in close contact with my partner, who says they are not exactly close friends yet, but there is no aggression and both seem fairly relaxed. I have been saying for a while that I wasn't getting any more piggies - the lack of vet care for them here is so frustrating and upsetting, I hate having to watch them slip away when illness strikes. But I also hate any of them living alone, particularly in the summer when they are outdoors (and oh, how they love to be outdoors!). I certainly won't be acquiring any more girls, as the 7 all live together in the summer. But boys .... hmm, here's hoping Scrabble will live for an exceptionally long time. I will try to add Scoot and Soturi to my Blinkz site when I get a moment, although last time I tried to add Scoot I couldn't upload the photo. I am really excited about having a little one again, especially as he is so fluffy - I only had 3 fluffy ones left of the 10, and I do have a particular penchant for that bad hair day look - possibly because it is the look I have permanently myself! So, welcome to the Dolly Mixture family, Soturi, and here's hoping you and Zebra will be on snuggle terms by the time you move indoors for the winter! Firstly you need to take a poo sample to your vet and ask him/her to send it to the labourites to be analysed , this is relatively expensive, but believe me it can well pay for it?s self, in avoiding the hit and miss use of medications that some vet?s seam to favour . Secondary use 1ml syringe (from your vet, ask him for 5 or 6, as they only last about 10 feeds) The 1 ml syringe is 3 inches long and 1quarter inch wide. Don?t cut off the end right off, just cut off the part that takes the needle , then ream out the hole with the point of a Stanley blade, to make it large enough to squeeze out the paste, but not that large that the plunger can get out. Put a towel on your knee and Hold your pig with your hand over her head, and with your finger and thumb gently squeeze her cheeks until mouth opens , be gentle this is a new experience for her an she needs to learn to trust the procedure. With the 1 ml syringe (3 in) you need to put it in her mouth till it just passes the molars, keep it there and empty it in 3 to 4 gentle but positive pushes on the plunger. Slow and easy is the name of the game, never give her more than 1 ml, then wait until you are sure she has digested it before giving her another, and only about 4-5 ml in any one sitting. Little and often, I would feed your piggy every 3-4 hours, giving her the last feed at 1.00 am, and then give her first morning feed at 6-7 am, preferably 6 pm. Critical care is excellent but you also need a reinforced probiotic to get her digestive system started up again. Ask your vet for Fibreplex, it comes in a 15 ml syringe, and I think the dosage is 2 ml 4 times a day. Don?t through the old Fiberplex syringe as these are extremely useful in weaning piggy of syringe feeds, as you can mix progressively thicker, up to near solid pastes , and the Fiberplex syringe is robust enough to deal with it, it also has a dose measuring ring that will allow you to administer almost dry little pellets . In addition to Fiberplex, Avipro plus is a useful probiotic as it also contains electrolytes? to re hydrate her and all important vit c. I personally give 1 ml of paste then half a ml of Avipro plus solution to wash the past down. She will soon let you know what she is most comfortable with. Some advocate the use of diocarm tablets (not the capsules, to many chemicals) for diarear 1 quarter of a tablet I?m not sure (it?s in Gina links) but personally I have never found them effective . Take her wait`, this is wery important to show you what progress she is making. When she is positively gaining whait and looking better in her self, this could take weeks, be patient , start feeding alternate feeds of her preferred dried food , milled in a coffee bean grinder to a fine powder and mix it to a paste with water (don?t be tempted to do what I did once and mix it with liquidized veg, this could just give her gas and make the problem worse). Once you are happy she is out of the woods, phase her of the critical care and start to thicken the milled dried food mix slowly over a period of days until the paste very thick and this is where the Fiberplex syringe come in really handy , you will now be able to administer little quarter inch long almost dry pellets just to the centre of her molars, and encourage her to start eating for her self. This is all time consuming and it could take from a few weeks to several months , you will really, and I mean really , get to know you pig. And it is unbelievably rewarding . Sounds like he/she is in need of one. It is inbelievable that someone working at a vet's office would even consider feeding a piggy to a snake. I thought that vets were supposed to care for animals. It is illegal in England to use live vertebrates as feed for another. One is allowed to feed live invertebrates such as crickets and mealworms to those that need them. The snake group that used to have a table at our RSPCA Pet Days used frozen rats and chicks for their snakes. That's a horrible thought too. The snakes were always shown in one of the classrooms rather than the hall where the other animals were on display. Unsurprisingly, not everyone wanted to see the snakes. They are beautiful but I wish that they were vegetarian. I have taken in piggies from several local vets, who all have my number. You may find that you get more calls! Sometimes piggies have been left there when their owners could not afford the bill. One lovely boar was handed in by a man who found him in a cemetery when walking his dog one evening. Armand, as I named him, became a regular at Pet Days and was able to repay the kindness shown to him by being a piggy ambassador. Welcome to the new little piggy. Tell us all about him/her. Critical care is really Oxbow pellets enhanced, and this recipe also calls for guinea pig pellets. You can find oat or barley flour at a specialty store such as Whole Foods, although many grocery stores have it in the organic section. This recipe makes a ton - I would cut in half. It looks disgusting but I've had bunnies who wouldn't eat critical care eat this. It's amazing how much a 2 lb. guinea pig can fight. I hope your little one is better soon. Recipe . 4-5 cups high fiber (29-30%) pellets (high quality; your bunny's favorite alfalfa-timothy blend) . 1 cup oat or barley flour Mix together, and then cover in water and let soak 2-3 hrs Add: . 11.5-12 oz V-8 juice (We don't use low sodium V-8 juice since the juice is a relatively small part of the mush, and doesn't add enough sodium for it to be a problem.) . 1 can vanilla Ensure (or the generic equivalent which is much less expensive, and identical in all other ways) . 1 large can pumpkin (the two-pie size, but plain pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling) Mix all and add water or Pedialyte to attain desired consistency. Can be thinned to syringe-feed consistency. Use pedialyte only if the rabbit needs the electrolytes. A healthy rabbit doesn't. For a healthy rabbit, the consistency should be fairly dry, and it should be given in "lumps." If it squashes down, and the rabbit has no incisors, it can be hard for him/her to eat it. I "fluff" if up again if this happens. Storage I freeze it in heavy freezer bags, in quantities that we'll use within 4 days. We thaw it in the refrigerator, and keep it refrigerated until it's used up or gets older than five days thawed. In a pinch, we thaw in a microwave. It can be stored frozen for several months. It doesn't go bad, but would lose some of its taste, like frozen vegetables do. We serve it to healthy bunnies straight from the refrigerator, and leave it for as much as 12 hours. For sick rabbits, when we are syringe feeding, we put the syringe in hot water so the mush is warm. Amount All the rabbit can/will eat if weight gain is needed. We give it twice a day, and start with 1/2 to 1 cup twice daily for healthy rabbits, where quantity depends on their activity level, whether they can eat other things, etc., as well as their weight. I let them eat all they want for a day, and determine how much that is. Then I limit them to that, and check their weight once a week, and make modifications based on weight gain or loss. (It also depends on how much of their mush their mate eats... ) I'm syringe feeding a bed-ridden rabbit who weighs about 5 lbs. He maintains his weight on 210 cc's of syringed mush per day, plus 120 cc's sub-cu fluids, and generous vegetables. (Rabbits should have 10cc's of fluid per pound of rabbit three times a day. Fluids are in the mush, in the sub-cu fluids, and in the vegetables, if they can eat them.) Sometimes he eats more mush, sometimes, less. But he averages 210 cc's per day. In-Reply-To: <953957.74629.qm@web46414.mail.sp1.yahoo.com> Message-ID: Hello again Katie My advice for bathing Lizzy would still be to telephone your local animal rescue and ask them if you can watch them giving one of their guinea pigs a shampoo. That way you will know exactly what to do and what not to do, and feel for yourself what tempreature the water needs to be, etc.. You can make a list of any questions you want to ask, too. I am sure they will be only too happy to show you, and you can take your mum or dad with you. Lizzy should not be shampooed for another month at least. As she inhaled water last time, she really must be allowed to get over her ordeal and let the medicine your vet gave heal her. It's quite hard to explain in writing shampooing a guinea pig, and the best way to learn this one is to observe someone doing it. Good luck and give Lizzy a hug from us all. So, she gave me some eye ointment. She said that they eye would dry up and he will be 100% blind in that eye. We suspect that he did it while scratching him self.. Silly Piggy. I know that you are only 10 ten years old, but it sounds like you might want to read up a little on Guinea Pig Care. I would not suggest giving a guinea pig a bath...EVER. G-Pigs are fairly clean, and they will usually clean themselves. Sometimes, it is necessary to spot clean certain areas on a pig with a luke warm washcloth, so that is fine. I don't know what type of bedding you are keeping Lizzy on, but if you find that she is getting stinky, then you need to refresh and/or change her bedding more often. I refresh my pig's bedding daily and change her bedding out completely on a weekly basis. Also, Please, Please do not give your Lizzy 'human' snacks like Doritoes, Popcorn, etc. They are not good for you pig, and they could make your Lizzy sick, which is sounds like that has already happened. Your piggie should have g-pig pellets, fresh water, and fresh timothy hay available to her at all times. Here are some websites that have Excellent information on G-Pig Care, Diet, Health, etc: http://www.guinealynx.info/ http://www.cavymadness.com/care.php#firstthings http://www.cavyspirit.com/ There are tons more websites out there, so just Search on 'Guinea Pig Care' and you'll see. If she isn't then she could catch a cold. To make sure she is dry feel her hair all over her body. If she feels damp then don't put her back. Make sure that when the towel is wet change it to a dry spot or a new towel. Also if your piggy has short hair she shouldn't need a bath all that often. Only when she gets dirty. Hope this helps, Sarah and the piggy gang. ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, July 09, 2008 8:34 AM Subject: Gpdd Digest, Vol 7, Issue 208 > Send Gpdd mailing list submissions to > gpdd at gpdd.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://gpdd.org/mailman/listinfo/gpdd_gpdd.org > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > gpdd-request at gpdd.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > gpdd-owner at gpdd.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Gpdd digest..." > ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > The GPDD moderators frequently reject messages that do not follow > these guidelines: > A lack of a Topic label is the most common reason for message rejection. I just wanted to clarify what I wrote to Katie earlier. I know that it is okay to give guinea pigs baths, especially the long-haired piggies. And lets's face it, some piggies are just plain messier than others. I just don't recommend giving them baths, if you're not experienced at doing so. I tried to give my Beloved Amberlea a bath years ago and it was just so stressful for both me and the pig, that that was the last time I attempted that. So, I personally, would not try to give a guinea pig a bath. My piggie-sitter in Virginia, Mary, gave my Beloved Brownie Bear a bath once and boy! did she smell good. So, in almost 5 1/2 years, B-Bear had one bath. And she wasn't a dirty pig. Princess Snowflake has owned me for over 9 months now and she's never had a bath. She's an Abby pig so she has that wild hair, but she keeps it clean and I've never even had to spot clean her. She's kind of Prissy though and is really into her looks. hee Anyways, just thought I'd clear that up. There are dangers to giving them, and one of mine gets terrible shakes when he has to have one, which is why I get the CCT to see to mine. (Mine do have them every now and again because of an infuriating mites problem that has driven them (and me!) bonkers.) There is so much to explain about how to bath and NOT to bath a guinea pig, and in writing this is difficult to get over clearly, so I have said to Katie that she really needs to watch someone professional (a vet's nurse or an animal rescue nurse) do this. Katie's guinea pig actually inhaled water when bathed, so that is why I gave Katie that advice. However, Katie, if you are reading this, there's a lot of widsom in what Leah has said. Only bath your Lizzy if your vet says it is absolutely essential. Otherwise please don't do it, as there is the danger she could inhale water again and not be so lucky the next time. It is frightening to word it like that, but guinea pigs are delicate animals and they really need to be handled with a lot of care and understanding. I know you care for Lizzy very much, Katie, so I know you will want what's best for her, too. About your question about bathing lizzy. Lizzy do?s not need a bath, the only thing you will do if you bath her, is make her very unhappy , piggy?s keep them selves clean. If you love her and want to make her happy, give her fruit and vegetables treats like romaine lettes , a slice of apple a small piece of banana . Lizzy may not like all the treats, just spend a little time to find out what she likes the best . Do not give lizzy to many treats, as this may upset her tummy. The only treat you can feed Lizzy as much as she wants Is TIMORTHY HAY, and this is the best treat, for a healthy piggy. Our pigs love it. Lets say she likes apple and Romania lettuce, then when you pick her up to stroke her give her 1 lettuce leaf or a small slice of apple, lizzy will love you for this. Just hold lizzy for 10 minutes and then put her back in her cage. It may take her a while to get used to you . When she is used to you , hold her for longer, but remember if she gets streest , put her back. You can not force lizzy to do things she do?s not want to do, you must earn her trust. Go to your local library with your mom and take out a book on caring for Guinea Pigs. It?s good you righting to us for advice, this shows you are a caring person , and that you love lizzy, so please Katie do not bath lizzy again. The last time I spoke to you on this sight I mentioned the P.D.S.A. The P.D.S.A is in Great Britton (U K) If you live in another Contrary , ask your mum to contact the Animal Welfare Society in your country , and ask them where the nearest P.D.S.A type of organization is. I think most of us here have been in that same agonising position of having a very poorly piggie and being unable to syringe feed it properly or administer other treatments we hope may save them, and we all feel for you. As has been said here many times before, sometimes it is just Their Time and we have to let them slip away and be glad that they are no longer in any discomfort. It never gets any easier, and whether the departure is expected or not, it always breaks our hearts and we are deeply saddened. I often wonder why guinea pigs were made so fragile when they are such wonderful, harmless, giving creatures. I have a really nasty gander at present, and they can apparently live for 50 years or more, and I am forever asking myself, why can't guinea pigs have such a long life expectancy, and be more robust. I find myself wondering whether maybe it is precisely that - they steal such a major part of our hearts even when they are with us for so short a period. If they stayed with us too long, our hearts would become completely engulfed by them and we would find life impossible in the absence of such an exquisite little friend when they eventually went to The Bridge. But then I think of my beloved little disabled piggy, Cherub, who was only with us 5 brief weeks, and I think she stole a greater part of my heart than any of my other furbies ... so I guess that cannot really be the answer to the mystery. Anyway, please know that all over the globe there are members of our special gpdd community who understand exactly what you are going through and are reaching out to you across the miles to give you comfort and try to ease the pain a little. She has really dry feet with an almost fish scale looking growth all over the bare parts and spurs. I took her to our regular piggy vet and he said it wasn't bumblefoot, and he'd never seen anything like it before. He suggested soaking them in salty, warm water then gently rubbing them with a dry towel about once a week. We've done this several times, and it gets rid of some of it, but keeps coming back. Has anyone ever seen anything like this? Any suggestions? We've switched from newspaper to carefresh to towels and still no better. Also she's started getting much heavier a few days ago and I can feel at least 2 babies the size of small prunes. I haven't had a pregnant guinea pig in 30 years! Please help! I've printed out Peter Gurney's and Guinea Lynx's pregnacy pages for reference, but if anyone has had experience I'd appreciate any tips. She gets all the best pellets, hay, fruit and veggies along with her C every day, I just wonder if there's anything else special for pregnancy. I'm so afraid of her getting pregnancy toxemia. Is it okay to move her when I clean her pen or to weigh her to make sure she's not losing weight? Is it safe for her female penmate stay in with her when she gives birth? One sow Katty, had a nearly bare tummy and sides, this was due to her being under stress after giving birth to 6 babies (2 where still born), our vet said part of the problem was hormonal and part of it was her barbering (gnawing at her fur) , it cleared up in 2 weeks. The second and more complicated is Hetty. She is prone attacks of UTI (a bladder infection). Every time hetty is starting an attack of UTI, we know now because her tummy starts to look like an extremely bad hair cut, and as it progresses to different parts of her body , parts that she could not reach if she where Barbering. Our vet is of the opinion that this is also hormonal, and said it was part and parcel of a female pig with down below problems, and not to worry . The only thing that we found helpful was nappy rash cream. Hetty is 100% now after a 2 month infection. I am not saying that I think Peaches has UTI, It could simply be the menopause , bit never the less I would take her to the vets , (I always air in the safe side when it comes to piggy?s ) I would like also to take this opportunity to thank Penny and the piggyfriends for her suggestion of CYMOLON for UTI, I have not tried or head of it but I will most certainly give it a try on her next infection, thanks penny! Cranberry juice just does not work for Hetty?s UTI. I know that all pigs are different. You didn't tell us her name but "Welcome new piggy " from us all. I am no expert with pregnant piggies but I have had a few born here at Piggyfriends and have been lucky in that all the births have occurred with no problems. It is the most wonderful sight to see newborn piggies running around their pen on day one and trying all the new foods. They are just too cute. You are doing the right thing by making sure that she has nothing but the best to eat. A pregnant piggy's need for Vit C doubles at this time. Just don't let her become too fat as this can lead to toxaemia. Your piggy is obviously very young to be having her first litter. I once had three very young rescues giving birth on the same day as a result of them having been kept with another sow, who, when I collected them was not a sow at all ( but he came home anyway ). Despite what you may have read, these young ones can have larger litters. My three had 5, 4 and 4 between them but they all coped admirably and fed each others' babes. If I had not been present at the births, I probably could not have told which babe belonged to which mum. Others will tell you differently but I offer my mums-to-be a dish of brown bread and milk a couple of times a week in the lead up to the birth as this helps develop strong bones in the babes. Peter always did this and his word is good enough for me. I continue this for a while after the birth too. Please don't all post and tell me that piggies are lactose intolerant. Lisa asked for help from those who have experienced pregnant piggies and this is what I do but I'm sure that she will be delighted to receive everyone's input. As some of you know, I am a great advocate of natural remedies and offer my pregnant sows some raspberry leaves as these are reputed to make for an easier birth, are a uterine tonic and have healing properties in uterine infections. I can pick these for most of the year but Peter used to use Dene's Raspberry Leaf pills for his mums-in-waiting. One tablet a day, increasing to one and a half for a week to ten days before the expected birth. This info about the tablets comes from his "Piggy Potions" book. Do not be afraid to handle your piggy - just do it very carefully and only when necessary. Possibly you could put a towel in her pen and wait until she is sitting on it and then lift the towel with her inside. I wouldn't bother about weighing her at this time. When I clean my pens I do one half, wait until the piggies move onto the clean side to get at the food, usually a pile of grass, that I have placed there and then I clean the other side. Perhaps you could do this and reduce the need for handling her even further. Do leave her friend with her when she gives birth. I have always left mine together and the others act as aunties to the babes even if they cannot feed them. You do not want your piggy to be stressed so keep everything the same for her. I do hope that everything goes smoothly but keep the number of your emergency vet close as you will need to rush her there if any complications develop. My rodentologists have saved the life of many a client's babe by their timely intervention. Wishing you and "piggy" all the very best. Keep us all posted. Penny and the Piggyfriends. It is the same bedding we have always used. I will keep up the shampoo and soak every other day until we leave for vacation. If she isn't better when we get back I will try my vet. I ordered Marion Robison's (better known here as Bellarobi) Guinea Pig book, "Poly Pig and Sweetie Find a Home." I had just received it and was reading it just prior to last week's power outage and so it was that I got so caught up in it that I actually finished reading the last few pages with a flashlight late that night. (And I'm not one to waste flashlight batteries when the power is out.) ???? I was amazed by the originality of the artwork, It's adorable! My power went off just as the girls had left the piggies alone outside! (But I don't want to give away any of the plot) so I HAD to read on though I'll admit to calling the power company before finishing it. The structure and content are both terrific though my piggies must be real gluttons compared to Poly Pig and Sweetie. But they have to get that vitamin C! And plenty of it! ???? The do's and don'ts at the back of the book are outstanding and make it even more of an informative book while imparting a highly interesting story line. The large cage, all those little details that are so important are part of the story, starting with the trip to the pet shop and the purchases there. ???? Oh -- And we know those little colorful "fences" we all know so well. Such details contribute as well as the actual photographs of Poly and Sweetie inside the back cover page. The book itself, like the cover, is illustrated with cut out felt. I fell in love with the cover! ???? I will truly treasure my copy, share it and recommend it, which is exactly what I'm doing here! ???? I am just really taken with the story itself AND the unique art work. My first thought was, "Wow, How cool." I would have never thought of that of felt. It makes me feel homey and cozy inside. ???? My highest compliment -- looking at the cover makes me smile. Even yet. So do go to Marion's Website: http://bellarobi.com/ or link: Home Page I feel really lucky, I have 2 GP friends who are published authors, Leah and Marion, plus Jude who beautifully illustrated Leah book on the Adventures of Brownie Bear and Butterscotch and is now offering her own line of greeting cards all of which can be seen at Cavy Madness.com. What a creative group we have here, including Allyssa's Movie Star Guinea Pigs featured in "Carrot Wars", Commissioned by HBO. That is still available in VCR nd DVD I believe. Link: http://hometown.aol.com/guineapigfilms/ And let's not forget Jenni, who helped Beethoven Pig a lot in the ever famous "Beethoven Pig's Rumblestrut Blues." There's a great deal of other talent here as well, but it's late. Still, we all know who you are. She looks much better after the dandruff shampoo wash and soak. I think the problem is she is a lazy girl and spends much time laying in her house on her belly. I do my best to make sure the bedding is dry, but sometimes when I come home from work she will be laying in wet pee. It is only on her belly and back legs where she touches the bedding. It is the same bedding we have always used. I will keep up the shampoo and soak every other day until we leave for vacation. If she isn't better when we get back I will try my vet. It isn't the kind of baldness for an ovarian cysts. I have had a girl piggie with that before. She is fine otherwise. The pathology came back and it shows he has a very rare form of cancer called mammary adenocarcinoma. That makes it malignant, so I hope & pray the vet got it all out. The vet did say he didn't know much about this because it is so rare, but that it will possibly (but not definitely) grow back, maybe in a few weeks, maybe in a few months, maybe in 12 months. Another vet said this is an aggressive cancer and will definitely grow back and to enjoy Hamish whilst we can. He is the most beautiful piggy - a Rex with the most gentle, loving nature. My Donald adores him and they live together as best friends & soulmates. We have to keep an eye on our lovely teddy-bear boy and pray that this time this type of cancer will not act as it's supposed to. We will all be lost without Hamish. We planed the pregnancy , and you are making Yvonne and me feel broody , (for more baby piggy?s , not human kids , no no no). There is only one bit of advice we would give , video as much as you can . I filmed more than 5 hours and took countless? stills. We often show them to Polly, Mouse , Crinkle and Baby pig , they seam totally disinterested , but for us watching those 4 little ones pop corning like crazy and al the other antics they got up to is truly worth its whiet in gold. So, I thought I'd post something. I have a 1 yr old Himi Texel boar that injured his eye overnight. Today, it was completely crusted over and had a funky odor. So, off to the vet we go. Thankfully, I live across the road from an excellent vet :) She looked at his eye and determinded that his eye was indeed damaged and un-repairable. So, she gave me some eye ointment. She said that they eye would dry up and he will be 100% blind in that eye. We suspect that he did it while scratching him self.. Silly Piggy. Anyone else have this happen before?? However, a few months ago I wandered in and saw a cage on the floor; in the cage was a young cream and white crested piggy with big brown eyes. The owner of the shop said the pig had been dropped off there as piggy apparently didn't get along with the peoples' 5 year old child. The shop owner knew I had pigs and said I could have the little bad boy if I wanted him. I took piggy home and named him Dulce la Leche, which is a type of Mexican caramel (for his color). For the first few weeks, Dulce would bite me (hard!); he'd let me hold him while I was sitting down, but when I'd stand up, he'd panic. And he wouldn't let me put my face near his. He didn't get along with my other pigs at all. I'm thinking that the child who owned him probably carried him around by the legs or something and probably squealed in his face, the way Dulce behaved. Anyhow - several months later, while Dulce still doesn't really get along with my other pigs, he's turned into a regular little cuddle-bug with me. No more biting, I can carry him around, he lets me check his teeth, clip his nails, etc. Isn't it just great to gain the trust of these little creatures? Watching him change from a hyper-nervous creature into the sweet boy I knew he could be has been a joy. Love you, little man! She seems better and only makes the funny little noise when she poops, which she hasn't done a whole lot of. I have seen her pee without pain. She also seems back to her normal self although she isn't eating her usual amount, but that, of course, could be due to the antibiotic. The vet is telling me to be patient. I'm working at home today and that Princess won't leave me alone. She wants her lunch, but it's too early. Whee're on a schedule, I tried to explain to her, but does she care??? Nope! My knee hurts, I think from a couple of days ago cuz during floortime, when it was time to go back into her cage, Miss Snowflake wanted to play games (as usual) and run from me (ya know, the 'Catch Me If You Can' game). And so I dove on the floor trying to get her and I guess I'm getting a little too old for that cuz my knee hurts. Oh well, the life of a Slave, I suppose. I'm out of breath right now cuz I just chased her around the living/ dining rooms, that Silly thing. Now, during 'Lunchtime with the Princess', I let her sniff the strawberry juice off my finger and then I run and she chases me. One day, she felt a little chunkier than usual, so that's why I started having the Princess run these laps around our living/dining rooms. Well, whee had so much Fun, that it's a daily thing now. On the last lap (the 3rd lap), I say to her, "Come to Mama! Come to Mama!" And then she runs FULL SPEED to me and then literally Jumps into my hands and purrrrrs up a storm as I lift her to my chest and then I give her lots of piggie kisses and she makes those cute noises and is all worked up. Oooooh, I Love that Pig. I don't know if it's her 'Abby' breed, but her personality is just Delightful. Well, I better get her some lunch. She's waited long enough, I suppose...Wheeeek! I took her anyway. I should trust my own knowledge and instincts. I knew it wasn't anything to worry about, but of course the vet has to do all these tests. Skin scrapings that left her skin raw in patches, fungal test, and a ivermectin shot even though the scrapings were negative for mites. She wants her back for two more ivermectin shots. I guess since we are going away the peace of mind is worth $142.00! I bought some medicated oatmeal shampoo from the vet and will use it tonight. It appears the Selsen Blue shampoo was working. When the vet gave Peaches the ivermectin shot the needle bent. The vet said piggies have tough skin. Poor Peaches got stuck twice. She got extra treats tonight. I was hoping to hear from Penny about this as she breeds Teddys and gave us Peaches. She must be on vacation. Those retired folks, always going somewhere. And we hope to join them the end of this year! Thanks for all your suggestions. You guys are great! Dee who is on vacation tomorrow, yippee! But I will miss my fur babies. It is such a shame that the wonderful shampoo that I use for the Piggyfriends is not available overseas as it would have saved a nasty vet bill. Why is it that vets do not seem to know that Ivermectin can be given orally? Do they get some sort of sadistic pleasure from sticking needles into little piggies? Piggies do, indeed, have tough skin. He had infections from the bite wounds he suffered and then we discovered he had mites. His mite situation appears to be getting worse. He got his second ivermectin injection today and the vet said that if it doesn't start to work then we will have to start testing from other problems. Luke bites himself like crazy, leaving blood all over his back. We have been giving him an anti-inflammatory medication, but it seems to have stopped working well. Meanwhile, Luke doesn't want to be held and I am breaking out in a rash when I do hold him. He doesn't seem to have the spunk he had when we brought him home a month ago. I don't like the look in his eyes either--no spark at all. Luke remains in quarantine upstairs, away from Isabel and Lily and I pray that they don't somehow catch what he has. Are his symptoms consistent for mites? I've never dealt with mites before and had hoped that he would improve by now. He seems to be regressing. We maintain a regimen of changing shirts, washing hands and arms, cleaning his cage 2-3 times a day, etc. Any advice would be most welcome. Poor little guy is so miserable. I once rescued a little boar, whom I called Balthazar as he arrived on Twelth Night. He was in the condition that you describe Luke when I collected him. He was in such a state with his mite infestation that he would roll over in his attempts to bite at his back and was covered in blood. He was also having seizures, which were terrifying to behold. He hated to be held as he was in such pain but it was necessary in order to cure him. He was given Ivermectin immediately and had to go on to have 8 doses of it in all before it was under control. I was also bathing him twice a week. I think that I used Seleen at the time, though I have not recorded what I used in my notes. Now, I would use Vet Select Repel, which I know is not available in the US but your vet will advise you what to use. The mites will not hurt you or your family but are highly contagious to other piggies so you are right to wash after handling him. I don't know why you should break out in a rash. I kept Balthazar in a separate room until he recovered and used different towels for his bath. I think that I probably threw them out afterwards, even though the mites cannot live without their host. Poor little Luke. This is so distressing for all concerned. Hopefully the Ivermectin will kick in soon. With a severe infestation, the next doses are needed to kill off the next generation of mites. All of the Piggyfriends, as long as they are over 3 months of age, are given Ivermectin as soon as they arrive and they all have a treatment of one dose every 3 months thereafter as a preventative. I have the liquid Ivermectin, which I give orally. One dose of this is 2 drops. Paws crossed for little Luke. We are all thinking of him. Penny and the Piggyfriends. If a brown Piggyfriend arrives, they often are given chocolatey/ sweetie names. Or should I say candy? You might like to consider that if you are a chocoholic like me. I have been doing this since October, as our lease states only 2 cats per apartment. I figure I am pushing it with 2 cats and 5 pigs! So I get my extra cat fix, sorry pigs, by doing "Cat Care" there. My residents at work think that title is funny since they all know it is just a fancy name for "The one who Scoopers My Poopers". Tangent! Back to the story! Wow, I get too detailed at times! Every so often they put out the WAHS News letter, and before doing so they ask for ideas and articles to go in it. Well I never figured a story about guines pigs would make it since, they deal only with cats and dogs. TO my suprise.. and shock.. it did! The woman who writes the paper wrote me back, asking for more detail, she was very interested in the "New Piggie Trends"! I wrote about C and C cages, fleece bedding, the tabu of single piggies ( I know some may have them, but mine love it so much more to be with their own kind! I am just to big to fit in their house, no matter how big it is, and I would eat them out of house and home!) http://www.winonahumanesociety.org/ This is the link, click on read the news letter. Long story...anyway, she was very itchy & also had ringworm, which is very contagious, so be careful just in case. The vet gave us this spray called Pramoxine HCI. It also has colloidal oatmeal in it, as well as the Pramoxine, which helps with the itching & inflammation. You just spray it on their fur & rub it down into their skin. Just be sure to keep away from the eye & face area. If your vet doesn't have it, I have the name of the manufacturer, so maybe you can get it thru them. I sometimes get itchy & a rash after holding piggies. Esp. on my arms & chest. Maybe you are allergic. Or maybe the mites are biting you? When my hammie Radar had mites, he got oral invermectin. Guinea pigs have *very* thick skin, so shots are difficult. Perhaps your vet could switch? Sorry I can't do more to help. It's such a sad situation. We where at our wits end , Yvonne noticed that when in the past we had a piggy with sloppy poo?s, the poo formed a perfectly round balls around all the toe nails, we could not use poo , obviously , but Yvonne hit on this . We bought some powder and liquid that is used in making false fingernails, you dip the small brush that comes with the kit into the liquid and then dab it in the powder, then we dabbed it on to the sharp ends of Cilla?s toe nails, just enough to form very small balls around the sharp ends , held her for 10-20 mins till dry. Cilla then had perfectly smooth and rounded toe nails , that she could no longer damage her self with. That may or may not be some use to you, as I understand it, Little Luke is only using his teeth , or is he !!!. The next part I am sure will be helpful to Luke. We then commenced to treat what we considered was the main cause of the problem. Not the mites, I think they where well dead after the second shot of Ivermectin. We believe the problem was the healing skin, tightening as scabs where forming, and it was this that was driving her crazy, so we used cotton wool buds dipped in to Zink and caster oil (nappy rash cream). And dabbed them gently around the drying skin, to soften it, we did this 6-7 times a day and it worked , it took about 2-3 weeks. Cilla is now fine, and on reading your post, I went to cheque her over . When I pinked her up she felt like she had put on some weight , 225 grams in fact . Cilla is and 18 month old sow that has had 1 litter with her previous keeper, (Cilla is a rescue pig, ) She is pen mate to the most humanized old boar Tobby, he is such a wonderful personality, and we have been trying to get a litter of him for nearly 2 years. Sorry for rabbiting on but we are over the moon, it was only two days ago we where feeling envious of Lisa, and her happy forthcoming event with Qynn. We are taking Cilla to the vet to confirm . When I got to the boot sale I couldn?t concentrate on anything I kept thinking about this poor piggy, I couldn?t let him get ground in to the road and forgotten . After about 5 mins I decided that I had to go and rescue the remains and burry him with dignity in our garden with all of our much loved past piggy?s . Give him a name and cross him to the bridge on tonight?s gpdd. When I got to the spot my poor dead piggy was nothing moor than a very realistic child?s soft toy, boy was I relieved. Please accept our belated condolences, and please also convey our condolences to his other family. We know that it is so easy to second-guess our decisions in regard to our beloved piggies, but please don't. You did the right thing in finding a family where he would have other piggie friends, and you obviously chose the right people and piggies, since he was loved so much by them. We think that Babu Franklin was so lucky to have two families who cared so much about his well-being. We are glad that you were able to visit him a couple of times in his new home and that you were able to take home some of his ashes to bury with his sweet Nani Alice. We hope you won't leave the list. It is not only for people who have piggies but also for those who love them -- and you certainly qualify. How sad that she became ill so quickly and passed away, despite the wonderful care at Cavies' Castle. It is very sad to hear that sometimes piggies can develop gastric torsion after making a sudden movement. We are so very sorry that this happened. Please know, though, that she had a great life with you and all the best care, both during her life and at the very end. She was so lucky you rescued her pregnant mother and that she was born into the Piggyfriends' family where you were able to save her and her sister Gingerbread when they were born as such small piggies. I'm not sure the vet has ever done one of these on a guinea pig before (I'm not sure ANY vet in town has done one on a piggie, actually) but she said aside from the respective sizes, the principles are the same as doing it with a dog or cat, and that there is about an 80% chance that we will get a definitive answer from this. Of course, I am already freaking out quietly about it. Doris is obviously feeling fine; she finished the antibiotics for the UTI about a week ago and is back to eating, drinking, peeing, pooping and criticizing my animal husbandry skills with her usual enthusiasm. Part of me just wants to "wait and see what happens", but I know it would always be in the back of my mind until I know what it is, and it's always better to get all the information before you have to make the decision, right? I would have been myself!! Some of those toys are very realistic. When I used to have a table at the RSPCA Pet Days, I always took along a life sized guinea pig handpuppet, which my son had brought me back from the US. When I was not using it, I placed it on top of a cage of piggies on my table to keep it safe away from sticky fingers. (As a reminder, The Penny Giggles played hosts during the virtual Cape Alava Laying of the last Poo event.) Sandy is OK, or as OK as anyone might be under the circumstances. But her son, Rob, aged 38 died this past week of a heroin overdose. I have dealt with seriously addicted people myself and know getting clean is not just a simple mind over matter thing. Serious addictions can be deadly and not easily overcome, although many do get it behind them. Others keep trying but... And some don't even try to quit. Rob had tried to clean up his act but unsuccessfully. And is often the case, he pulled other people down with him. About 8 years ago Sandy welcomed Rob into the house with her, thinking that he was depressed and that it might be good for him to be around family. He did not tell her of his drug problems. Needless to say, money and other things began disappearing and Sandy, by then knowing what was going on, was determined to try to help him help himself...rehabs, etc. Some of you remember when Sandy was losing the Penny Giggles Farm, as she called her place, many of us were trying to help find homes and rescues for her little fur babies. She didn't even know where she was going. But the piggies were a priority. In the end she couldn't even keep her precious senior GP Wild Woolly Willie and he ended up, I believe, at Foggy Creek Rescue. (Bless them!) Sandy came very very close to being totally homeless herself and lost almost everything she had. She managed to preserve a few possessions but not many. Without going into any more details of her life and difficulties, she is now finally in a small apartment though doesn't even have a vehicle any more. And that's how addiction manages to take down those who love you as well as the addict himself or herself. I think it would be very nice if we could all take the time to drop her a short email or perhaps send her an e-card. I think the funeral is going to be today (Friday) or tomorrow. But anytime over the next few days or even next couple of weeks a note, letter or e-card would be appropriate. And its OK to mention the cause of death. I know that some things are awkward to address, but I think she needs our support. I know it would mean a lot. Cilla is pen mate to Toby a 4 year old (he is a real character ), we have been trying to get a litter of him for a long time, the poor muffin doesn?t have a clue, this is his second pen mate, we had to take his first mate, Mouse (she is one of Katty and Little pigs 4 babies) ,away from Toby, as she got to close to that 12 month mark where it becomes dangerous for a sow to litter. Toby and cilla have been together for a while now. Cilla is an 18 month old sow that has had 1 litter to her previous keeper. When Cilla is in season ,Toby is like a very gentle bull in a china shop, he tries every which way but the right one, and then when Cilla finally presents her self to him, he is to tired to do anything and go?s to sleep in the hay (Yvonne says he reminds her of someone , I wonder who !!!). Anyway , last week I noticed she had put on some weight over 200 grams , we where over the moon. The vet agreed she defiantly looked pregnant , he palpated her and was undecided and told us to bring her back in the morning and he would give her a scan. I got the sad news when I picked her up in the afternoon. Cilla was defiantly not pregnant, it was just fat, and he suggested that I cut down on her treats . Cilla was disgusted . If you want to use me as a baby machine , I want my treats. We, Cilla and I, finally agreed that I can cut down on her bananas?, but no way was she giving up her parsley and romaine . Please don?t get the wrong impression. We do not breed piggy?s, at PP, we have only had one litter, and that was just to increase our herd, and if Toby and Cilla ever manage it though i doubt it as Toby is getting on now, then we will most certainly be keeping all the baby?s . I will tell you guys the good news about Teddy teef on tomorrows blog. Yours in piggy?s , Dave and Yvonne at Piggy Palace. Now I will tell you about Teddy teef . Please bare with me as I tend to go on a bit when I?m frightened. Teddy is a pig we rescued 3 weeks ago, he was let lose on a field, and the people who rescued him, kept him for a couple of months , and then decided he had to go. They put an add on the internet , and we could not resist , Teddy is not a Rex, the name Teddy just seamed to fit his adorable personality, the teef part, Teddy Teef is his pet name , he has a wider gap than normal on his top lip and he is always showing his teeth . Anyway when we first got Teddy , he was very run down , his fur was dusty , and he was very frightened . After a week of careful TLC he settled down nicely , and soon started to realize that he was not by him self . I don?t think he had experienced the noise and smells of other pigs for a long time, Teddy was totally bemused by it all ,and desperately wanted to join in. There in lay the problem, we could not put him with another boar , as there are to many lady pig smells in the air and we could not take a chance on them fighting , its hit and miss keeping two boars together at the best of times , and although we have successfully in the past ha d 3 boars living happily together , and at present we have two brothers living together , it is only because they where bonded before puberty . The dilemma that we faced was whether to get Teddy neutered , as we have no idea how old he is, and if he would survive the anaesthetic . He had survived the field where he was dumped , we thought he had his share of good luck. We franticly searched all the rescues , trying to find a neutered sow for Teddy, with no luck. Then to make things worse Teddy started having problems eating , I looked at his molars ( we have an otoscope ) they where in a mess , I think he must have been fed only green food . We do not have that many problems with teeth as we feed large amounts of Timothy Hay, and the best thing is they love it. We have had older pigs with teeth problems , and as long as I am prepared to hold the pig then John, our much trusted Vet is prepared to work on the teeth without anaesthetic , it is not very nice for the poor piggy but we consider it to be the best option for an old, or sick high risk pig . I finally decided to put the ball in our vet?s court . I took teddy to see John , and told him of the dilemma , he gave Teddy a very thorough examination an was of the opinion that Teddy teef was a good candidate for the opp, and it would be an ideal time to do his teeth . He did Teddy the next day and every think went really well . Now we have 2 weeks to get a sow from one of the rescues , 2 weeks to let her settle in to piggy palace , then the most adorable little Teddy teef can really start to live. I?m sorry if I am rabbi ting a bit but I am really frightened . Since reading about Pat?s Doris, and Julie?s Hamish , I have been looking at our piggy?s , and on Sunday to my horror , I discovered a lump by my beloved Toby?s nipple. I took him to see our Vet the next day and I he recommended a needle biopsy. I will be taking him in the morning, and the results should be back by Friday . It?s going to be the longest week of my life . I love Toby so much . Yours Dave & Yvonne at PP ________________________________________________________________________ AOL Email goes Mobile! Shilington raises the cytric acid levels and makes the pig drink more so that sludge is less likely to cling onto the bladderwall and it makes the pig pee more and thus helping to pass whatever is in there. Lysium makes stones smaller. Both shilintong and lysium can not perform miracles but it might help. I cannot tell you where to buy lysium, because i live in the netherlands but i'm sure you can find it on the internet with google. We'll be keeping paws and fingers crossed whatever you decide ;-) Grtz Janneke Also, I would give BB 2 shilintong tablets per day. I would crush them up and mix with water and then syringe it to her. She wasn't crazy about the taste, but she would eat it up like a good girl. Leah :-) I hope these help some. We received an email . Apparently someone thought we should be rescuing not breeding . I did make it clear that we do not normaly breed piggy?s at pp. But I do stand by this , letting a sow litter is the most natural thing in the world ,and providing it is done responsibly, and only after extensive research. I would recommend that a true piggy lover experiences at least one litter, it is wonderful to see the look of contentment on a nursing sows face, and it gives us a greater understanding of these wonderful animals. And as for rescuing , this year we have added 5 rescue piggy?s to our herd, and plan to rescue another sow in two weeks , over 15 years we have rescued countless piggy?s will continue to do so , the only thing that stops us from setting up a rescue our selves is the knowledge that we are to sensitive, once rescued we could never part with them, and would soon become over stocked . I somewhat envy , the people we have met that re home piggy?s they do a truly marvellous job . piggy?s are our life . I was dreading and fearing it, too, but when it came right down to it, everything went well. Doris was very brave and did not even squeak when the vet took the samples (she took two, telling me that if she saw anything at all suspicious in either one, she would send them away to the veterinary college laboratory up north for a second opinion). Luckily, though, she felt she got a good sample each time and everything she saw indicated that it was a lipoma NOT a tumor. (As soon as she took the first sample and smeared it on the slide, she said it looked like fat cells to her, which is what it turned out to be!) I am still a bit concerned because she and Audrey haven't been cleaning up their pellets as usual the past few days, but we have had a string of bad thunderstorms over that same period, and I'm wondering if the piggies are a bit upset because of that? Anyhow, Doris and I send our best wishes to Teddy Teef, with the hopes that his test turns out the same and his Mum and Dad can relax a bit! Pat S. It seems that once again lines have been drawn in the old battle between breeding and rescue. Let's get a some facts straight: 1. The GPDD is *not* a rescue organization. 2. The GPDD is *not* a breeder organization. 3. The GPDD *IS* a forum for guinea pig lovers. 4. The GPDD is intended as a forum to exchange information about guinea pigs - health, rescue, breeding, behavior, and grief support are some of the topics we address. 5. The GPDD board has both rescuers and breeders. If *they* can get along, there's no reason the members can't! We'd like to remind everyone that the basic philosophy of the GPDD is that we are all here for the same reason: our love of piggies. If you are going to criticize, be careful of generalizing. Before you hit that "send" button, let that post sit for awhile. Re-read it - you'd be surprised at what was written in the heat of emotion can be said in a more civil tone. My sister came up with that idea since lotje didnt like the shilintong either but lotje loooved vitamin C (those are pills intended for humans, we had the c60 kind. Try to buy pills with the lowest dosage you can find, pigs need about 30 grams a day). With the vitamin C she really grabbed the syringe. Twice a day lotje would get her shilintong. In the morning before we went to work and in the evening. Our dosage was an estimated powderamount of (slightly more than) half a pill and a bit of water, mixed together in a syringe. What we did was the following. First we'd put enough water in the syringe. i cannot remember exactly how much it was, but it was a little bit more than in the guinealynxrecommendation (we figured a bit more water didnt matter and it went down a lot easier). When we were satisfied with the amount of water in the syringe, we would hold the smaller end of the syringe closed with one finger and next we would tip in the powder, with the help of the small end of a little teaspoon. then we would close both ends with our fingers and shake the syringe. After this, we carefully put in the thing that goes into the syringe (still holding the smaller opening closed), then turn it around and carefully let out the extra air. I know it seems like a lot of work but it's a lot faster this way. We fed less shilintong than leah because lotje didnt have stones (and never had, just a bit of sludge). If lotje would have had stones we would have upped the dose. There are other ways to mix up shilintong, some use honey (which is also a natural anitbiotic and is so sticky that even if they dont like it, they still have to clean themselves). Some use cranberryjuice instead of water (make sure there is no sugar added) When i have a uti cranberryjuice really helps me. Dont overdo the cranberryjuice if you decide to put it in a water bottle (some people do that) because too much cranberry juice can cause belly problems. Some just make a shilintongburrito with a romaine or endive leaf. My yaya never had shilintong but hates every syringe i try to give her. If i'd had to feed her shilintong, i'd just put half a pill behind her teefies twice a day. With her, this always works. It is always hard to tell if something works because you can never know what would have happened if you didnt use the shilintong. But we suspect it is likely that it had a positive effect on Lotje. Her x-rays never showed stones. Btw, it is always important to keep up her general health by feeding lots of veggies, providing good pellets (timothybased, not alfafa) lots of timothy hay, lots of exercise and a clean cage. My yaya is also a bit prone to cystitis but in her case, this is because she is such a messy pig. Since i started cleaning out the cage more often and keep her buttfur shaved (she is a long haired piggy) she doesnt get uti's anymore (well..a little.. sometimes, but then i have to shave her again, and it clears up quite fast) Ow.. and if your pig doesnt have stones, there is no need to feed lysium. Getting an xray can help diagnose this. But sometimes stones dont show up on x-rays, these stones can usually be seen with an ultrasound. Okay.. those were my two cents.. Identification info: Reply to: sale-773696276 at craigslist.org Date: 2008-07-28, 5:51PM EDT We have a cute little dark brown guinea pig named Mocha in our preschool classroom, but we have to find her a new home. We adopted her last September from the humane society. We have a cage, water bottle, and all the fixin's! She is in her cage but around preschool children all day. Please call 614 746 9465 (Lisa) or email me as soon as possible! We can provide a picture if you want. We will give her to a good home for free, we are just asking for 5 or 10 dollars in gas money if you'd like her delivered. Thanks! ? Ask your vet to check his molars. I dont have an experience with molars but since it has happened once I guess it could happen again. Since he is having trouble eating, might I suggest putting his food in a food processor and chopping it up into bit sized pieces for him? If your cavy likes Banana then that is a good treat to give him because it is soft. Just a suggestion until you can take him to the vet. It might be a problem with his front teeth because he is drooling. Do you know how to check there teeth? Here are some pictures of Peanut compare his teeth with Ravi's: Peanut has overgrown teeth that need regular trims so his mouth is always slightly open: http://www.freewebs.com/undermyskin11/peanut%20001.jpg He has an overbite so his bottom jaw is pulled back: http://www.freewebs.com/undermyskin11/peanut%20002.jpg His teeth don't grow in properly and since he has an overbite he cannot wear them down properly: http://www.freewebs.com/undermyskin11/peanut%20003.jpg I hope that this helped! please let me know how Ravi goes! best of luck! -Peanut and Heather _________________________________________________________________ With Windows Live for mobile, your contacts travel with you. http://www.windowslive.com/mobile/overview.html?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_mobile_072008
