You should ask the vet why she should be separated from her friend. My vet
has never suggested this, even after surgery. Once, I was afraid to put my
little girl back with the others because my vet had left a very large hole
so the abscess could drain because I bed them on hay and didn't want any to
get caught and I was afraid the others would pick on her. When I got home,
I tried feeding her some of her tastiest veggies, but she did not want them
and just looked tired. So, I just carefully started lowering her into her
enclosure. As soon as I did that, I heard the longest, deepest purr and
knew she had to be with friends ... I'd deal with any hay stuck (nothing got
into the wound) and any pesterers (but they all knew she needed rest and
left her alone).
Syringing meds can be very stressful. A few pointers may help
(unfortunately, I've had alot of practice).
Use a 1 ml syringe if you're not already.
Be calm while you are administering the dose. She will act out your stress.
Use the least amount of force. The more aggression you show, she will show.
Have her in the most relaxed position possible.
You can't do this with her now as she's already in need, but I always teach
my piggies to take things from a syringe as babies. I just have some apple
sauce or baby food and give several doses to them while they're in their
enclosure. The older pigs know what's in the syringe and will eagerly grab
it. The newcomers don't take it at first, but when they see the older pigs
going for it, they get curious. I don't worry if it takes a few times for
them to come for it since it's not medicine they absolutely need. The
downside of all this? At one time, I tried giving actual meds (good tasting
one) to a pig while in the enclosure ... but I had four other piggies
attacking the syringe so I decided I better take the sick one out and let
her have the syringe.
As for the tests, I'd probably do them for the peace of mind, but often
tests come back inconclusive, so you're not guaranteed an answer.
