Hi Janneke. I can tell you why these satins are bred-MONEY. They're "pretty" and, when people don't know their genetic history, good sellers.
I can't speak for the UK or anywhere else but, sadly, the statistics you quoted seem to be the same in the US. In my humble opinion these breeders have no morals. To breed a piggy with terrible painful problems and possibly shorter life is disgusting. BTW, few breeders like to be challenged for their claims! How nice that the one breeder was "shocked" about Yaya but do you really think she'll stop breeding satins?
What impressed me the most on the info I sent was the bone reconstruction that went on. That's what got my attention! Little Heddwyn no longer has bones that look like swiss cheese and seems to be doing fine.
Give me a couple of days and I'll see what sources I can find for you over here. I'll start by contacting Heddwyn's owner and get back to you.
Gentle hugs and kisses to sweet Yaya.
Joan/Lady Bug
